Got a call from 800-955-7070 to call back at this number. 888-213-8847 this is a valid Capital One number, but I would call back at the valid Capital One number from the web site customer service.

You can call 888 817-2970 to opt out of CaptialOne spam. this number is buried in their customer service catacombs, but if you search you can find it. It may work to reduce these calls. i'm waiting to see.

Caller ID is 800-955-7070

Called them back, they're trying to "give you" the option to add overlimit purchases in the event "you have an emergency" for only $29 (sounds like per transaction).  You have to opt-in, so this is their way to try and loophole the new legislation.

I declined, and then declined again, and then asked if this was the only reason they were calling me three times a day - yes, that's the only reason.

If they wanted to "offer" anyone of value it would be a credit line increase "in case of emergency", not overlimit permission for an insane fee.

This is Capital One getting desperate, or greedy, or most likely both.  It's a shame because I've liked them and have a credit card and auto loan in very good standing.  It's embarrassing they'd have to stoop to these tactics and it sucks less educated people are going to be suckered into thinking this is some benefit being offered, rather than a polite vampire saying he just wants to "look" at your neck.

But if you opt out of the agreement, can't Capital One close out your credit card? I don't want my card closed out. I like Capital One so far.

I just got a call from this number and it was Capital One. Essentially, new legislation in February of 2010 will not allow credit card companies to accept charges if people have reached their credit limit, which is how it SHOULD BE anyway. The legislation exist because credit card companies WANT people to go over their limit so that they can charge them a  ridiculous fee. Capital One is trying to get it's consumers to opt out of the agreement, which is a trick. Don't fall for it. They just want to be able to continue charging you fees. It is sad because the less educated someone is, the more likely they will fall for this trick because Capital One tells you "you never know when you might need to pay for something in an emergency".

Just got a call from the 800 #. Returned the call to see who it was - Capital One asking for my 16 digit credit card number. Really? I hung up. If this is a legitimate number for Capital One, why are they asking for account numbers over the phone? Sounds like a scam to me. Never enter an account number over the phone!

I just got a call from 1-800-955-7070. I go the new terms in the mail recently so I don't know why they would call me to let me know what they had sent me? Oh Well. I am happy with capitol one and I have had no problems with my credit card so we will see what they needed. People that freak out and talk about the bad interest and fees probably aren't very good at money management because if they were they wouldn't have unreasonable fees. If anyone not full of conspiracy theory logic knows what these calls are about please let us know.

after reading the replies i think i figured out why they called. they called at 9:30 am and did not leave a message so I googled the number to find this site. I saw someone saying they had a "dormant account" and they were trying to get them to "reactivate it". My husband and I closed our account over a year ago and just last week we received new cards in the mail?? They have the sticker on them to call to activate it but we didn't and I am sure that is why they were calling! VERY SNEAKY! Any credit card company is bad, interest rates, fees out the wazoo! SCREW YOU CAPITAL ONE!

I am home sick today and decided to answer this one since they've been calling and I knew it is a valid Cap One #. They are trying to explain that legislation has changed re: over the limit fee on credit cards. Apparently come Feb 23rd 2010, you can NOT go over you limit - i.e  you will be denied. But you can "opt in" to have the fee reduced to 29.00 as opposed to the current 39.00 fee. Ill admit, this made little sense to me (if they are offering a lower fee, for free, why would anyone turn that down?) So, I asked if the call was really to inform me of the legislation. The robotic op kept repeating do you want to opt in or not? The whole thing seems odd, i opted OUT and asked that nothing be changed on the card, as I don't go over the limit anyway. I will be googling this legislation later today to see if it is valid. Has anyone else actually had this communicated to you by Cap One? To be honest, I didn't know you could charge over your credit line amount. I assumed those charges would be denied. I guess legally going forward they can't approve anything over the established limit...

I've been getting calls since the 15th. I'm not answering, especially since they won't leave a message. I figure if it's important, they'll leave a message. It's just getting really irritating.

I was taking finals when they started doing this!

I get 2 or 3 calls a day from this 800-955-7070 number too.  While I do have a Capital One credit card and car loan, neither are late, over the limit, etc.  If they really want me to call them back, then leave $^*%*( message with a phone number and reason why they are calling me!

Got this same call three days in a row with an automated message to call capital one. Called them back and got the number taken off their telemarketing list, but apparently that takes several weeks. I asked the rep what I should do when they keep calling me. She said they might not. I said if they've called me 3 days in a row, don't you think they'll keep calling? Her first response, "Tell the person calling you are on the do not call list." I said that won't work since there's never anyone on the line. Her second response" "Don't answer the phone." You've got to me kidding me. I'm a Capital One customer, but this makes me think twice.

My cell phone caller ID shows that 800-955-7070 has called 3 times in the past 3 days, but has not left a message.  Googled it and found that the # belongs to Capital One.  Called the # and got their automated system.

I received a call from this number today, by a rep who had very poor English.  When he told me it was Capital One and had a great offer for me! I immediatley told him I was NOT interested and he needed to remove my cell phone number from his records.  He told me I could call the number on the back of my card to do this.....I asked him to give me his phone number, so I could call back and speak with someone else-who spoke English- to have my number removed.  Again, he told me I could call the number on the back of my card.  I hung up and called the number on the back of my Capital One card, and was told it could take 2-3 weeks for my number to drop off the telemarketing side of their business...but they would remove it....And low and behold, I was called again later today by this same number.  I didn't even answer!  What a Joke! Do we not have any rights anymore.....Who calls us, and states we can't have THEIR phone number!!

Its Capital One and you can call the number back. They make changes w/this phone number it seems. I just ended my account as the last thing I want is for a credit card company calling me asking for my information. If I was to call them then it is a diferent story.

I have gotten several calls on my cell phone from what sounded like Capital one, it was a robot, with my name (poorly pronounced) and instructions to call the number 1 800 678-7820 to activate my new card.  The robot said it was the number on the sticker on the back of my card.  If I had any questions to call 1 888 213-8847.

I called 800 955-7070 since they called me and I spoke with several people who assured me that my number was not on the account.  I eventually spoke with a guy named Will who told me about Capital One's Promo system which is different from their system that customer support has access to.  He looked into that and found my number alone with several other of my
numbers they had gotten from my credit report they pulled when I set up the account.  They are now using those numbers to call their accounts that have not had activity in awhile.  He assured me that he took my information out of that other system.

I called back and demanded to speak with an account manager and after 20 minutes on hold I got one.  It took awhile but she eventually admitted that capital one did use information not supplied to them to collect additional contact info and solicit dormant accounts.

I demanded that I be compensated for solicitation on my cell phone without my written consent and because they got my number in a manner I did not approve.  I was offered lousy points but I didn't take them.  I settled on an undisclosed amount but I am still not happy and I would cancel it if I wasn't trying to get a house right now, and I don't want any activity on my credit report that lenders can come back at me with.

It turns out they did upgrade my account back in September to a rewards account, but since I did not ask for that, it just makes me even more angry.  Darn them. (Substitute expletive where appropriate)

Called Capital One, the 800-955-7070 number is their general cust. service number as listed on their website. The message is in fact from them, but is still a scam, in that I did not request any information from them, and the man I spoke to on the phone admitted as much. It is just a way for them to get me to call in and re-activate a dormant account. Sketchy, but not phishing or whatnot.

I got the same thing a little while ago. The robot wanted to make sure I got what I had requested they send me. I did not request anything...
However, it is not unusual for a callback number and the number the robot actually calls from are different.

I got a call from a the real captol one number (caller id:800-955-7070) and the automated voice said the following:

This is capitol one calling for __my first and last name__.
We want to ensure that you have already received,
through the mail, the exciting news about your capitol one account
and to look in the mail in the next few days for what we are sending you.  If you have any questions please feel free to call capitol one at 1-888-213-8847.  Thank you.

This was pretty close to what the voice mail said, I erased it before I could write it down.

I verified the caller id number and was about to call the number given in the voice mail to see what was going on.  Then I check that number out and found that it was fake.

DON'T TRUST YOUR CALLER ID!!!!

Recorded message saying calling from Capital One, asking me by name. Then a menu and asking to input 4 digit birth year. Did not provide the year and was  asked to call 888-213-8847. This is a fraud.
