And you would be correct.  The collector/scammers follow these boards and do in fact post bogus claims in order to promote the collection or scams.  Usually they are pretty quickly exposed by others.

Bruins,  They are shills.  Usually the collector himself.  They frequent these information boards because they know that people are posting their doubts here and others are giveing them information about their rights.
These shills will post here to support the scammer claiming that they were arrested,  thrown in jail,  fined many times the original alleged debt,   anything to promote the believability of the scam.

Consumers across the country report that they're getting telephone calls from people trying to collect on loans the consumers never received or on loans they did receive but for amounts they do not owe. Others are receiving calls from people seeking to recover on loans consumers received but where the creditors never authorized the callers to collect for them. So what's the story?

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Wow!    sounds like you have old Joey at work again.  He is prominent and exposed on many other threads as Newhall Investigators,  Newhall associates,  and a few more.  He is really a case in fact,   Uses extreme means to intimidate people,  and violates every law in the FDCPA.   The checks he tries to collect on are usually way out of most states SOL.  He is a real piece of work.
He will try to get you to pay 1,200.00 for a 1.50 check bounced prior to wwII.

Received an email to my work account stating that I was going to be arrested if I didn't pay for a television I allegedly stole from  a rental property in another state. They were actually looking for another woman with the same name, but a different address, date of birth, social security number, etc. When I tried to tell Mr Hawkins that he had the wrong person, he became extremely unprofessional and insultrd my profession, saying that I shouldn't try to talk my way out of the situation just because I'm a psychologist. I had to call the state police and have them file an incident report. Now I have to have a nice chat with my employer as to why they divulged my work schedule and contact information to a third party without my consent.

Dear Me,

Yea, I agree.  We have paid off my wife's past bad debts too and I told him that I could prove it and he basically laughed at me and told me that they didn't have anything to do with credit reporting agencies and that it was a criminal matter!  What a joke.  It really upset me though them calling my wife a criminal and telling me that they would be happy to see her arrested!  I hope people like this go down hard...it ruined my whole day and my day at work. Glad I was there to intercept the calls at work so that my wife didn't have to be subjected to these low life creeps, but it did stress me out.  Tomorrow morning we are going to contact our attorney and let them deal with him.  I hope they tell him some just some of the things they told me!  We will see who gets arrested! lol

The funniest thing is...... the debt Martin Fakehall and Scamssociates called me about has already been settled with the collection agency. The REAL collection agency. They are trying to collect on something that is already paid off. I have the paper work to prove it. They are going to be sorry when the law catches up with them!

These people called my wife's work where I also work and happened to give another co-worker of ours her personal information and information about her debt!  They were basically rude an unprofessional to the co-worker!!!  Geez, cmon' people this is clearly a scam.  I got on the phone and the guy threatened me and my wife with a debt for a bad check from Grandy's restaurant! lol  The check was for like $17!!!  It was from 2005 and so that was like seven years ago.  I talked to the guy and he was increadibly rude and called my wife a criminal.  I threatened him back and if I could have gone through the phone I would have!!!  What a stupid jack***!!!  Please don't believe this crap people...the statute of limitations in OK for a bad check is not seven years and no one that is a legitimate agency can call you up on the phone and give your private information out to your co-workers.  How did he know I was her husband other than I told him so??!!  He said his name was Chris Hawkins and I noticed in an earlier post that the guys name was Chris Watkins...coincidence?
