You guys should all get off Jack's back. Frankly, I just donated a little while ago for my first time and I set up an appointment. They have my email which I would prefer contact via but, they never said they would call. My biggest issue now is given I have a new number and the propensity of charitable organizations to sell name lists off is how can I trust them with my number?

As for giving a break to CBS while I agree there is need there is also need for charities to be clear, concise and upfront on all accounts.

I'm not an idiot, I can keep track of my schedule and donate every 2 months. I don't need them leaving a voice mail which I have to take my time to sit through the slow as f*** system to go delete. No one else calls me, I don't want to suddenly accept calls because of these people. Apparently there's an app to block numbers? Going to download it tonight.

The most rare blood type is AB- then B- then A-, O- . They are particularily interested in O- blood because O- can dontate to any blood type.

You know, what i find amusing, is not the harassing phone calls from Canadian Blood Services, but the fact the grown individuals are arguing over a public forum....REALLY?? How old are you??

Jack C. stated his opinion, which I completely agree with!! He is not denoting the fact of giving blood, but the pushy individuals that call sometimes 3 times a day!! His wife, unfortunately had a bad experience, and through further investigation actually found out that she should not be giving blood, because the process ends up injuring her!! I had the same situation happen when I was about 10 and have been afraid of needles ever since!!

Leave the man alone! He doesn't like telemarketers, and TBH, who does?!? No one likes to be harassed and made to feel like a bad person because they do not feel like booking an appointment right then and there.

AND JUST TO CLARIFY, I give blood on a regular basis, but there has to be a better process as to contacting individuals to book appointments. Maybe they should develop an app with an email reminder as to when your next donation date is with the option to book then. :)

I really wish they'd used a Canadian number, because we all know we just want to troll (what looks like at first glance) spammers from another country.

These people call so often because the blood shortage is low a lot of the times and they need more people to donate. They called a few hours later when I first wanted information about donating blood and they called a week after I donated blood for the first time to book me for another appointment because they needed my blood type. They are pushy because sometimes they have to be unfortunately. But it is for a good cause and it's not like someone trying to sell you a credit card..seriously how often have you gotten a credit card from a pushy salesperson or continued their services..but your going to stop donating blood from a pushy call person?

Telemarketer
I agree with the negative views on here.

I donated and had a positive experience and was willing to donate again until I began to be harassed by them to donate again.  I receive several calls at a week.  It's a DONATION, not an OBLIGATION.  And I was willing to donate again, however I was really busy with work and finding it hard to find any free time.  I explained that to the woman on the phone and said I'd be down when I could and asked that they stop calling me.

They haven't stopped calling me, and trying to guilt trip me in to donating again has firmly made up my mind to  NEVER support Canadian Blood Services again.

i wish they would come up with their name, then i wouln't hang up or ignore the call.  great organization that we may all need sometime in our lives.  however with the number of telemarketing and other unwanted calls, and i do try to be polite, (am i the only one who feels guilty when i hang up on them?)  i would gladly answer the call or let my machine pick it up.

Here's a suggestion, Jack if your wife doesn't want to get any more of these calls:   just tell them she is on insulin.  They will drop her like a hot potato.  Problem solved.

I have never experienced rude or pushy callers from CBS; and when I go in to donate, everyone at the clinic is pleasant and grateful for my presence there.  Most people go there in the spirit of giving, not to find out what their blood type is.

By the way, I donate whenever I can; my veins are fine and it has no ill effect on me.  I donate because of others who can't, but would if they could, and even those who could, but won't.  In the end, every one of my donations saves 3 lives and I'm just fine with that.  I will continue to donate for as long as I can.

I normally make it a point to ignore any phone number that doesn't have a name attached to it, normally because it is a telemarketer or scammer.  After reading here and finding out that it was CBS (Canadian Blood Services), I returned the call and informed them that their computer only left a partial message on my machine.

Both myself and the operator confirmed the time, date, and location of my upcoming appointment for donation and she thanked me for my time and effort to verify everything.

Jack you are not speaking a foreign language.  But I think you are being way over the top here.  On one hand you say CBS should campaign.  One way to campaign is to phone and ask for donations.  CBS calls to remind us we can once again donate.

I have donated for years and never had a bad experience.  Nor have I had anyone "demand" my phone number.

I'm surprised you can even donate blood because your blood pressure must be through the roof.  You need to relax and if you don't want the calls block them.  By the way they aren't telemarketers.  They aren't trying to sell you anything are they?

CBS requires our personal information for security reasons.

Next time you want to know a blood type you can probably get your doctor to test you.

I don't think incentives are needed. Donating blood should be a free will gesture for those who can do so safely.

Personally, I'm strongly in favour of blood donation, but strongly against telemarketing. Simple solution I learned the hard way... give blood when you can, but refuse to provide your phone number, because they are relentless.

I fully support people's right to receive reminder calls if they so choose. But the process should be opt-in, not opt-out (which seems to be nearly impossible). I resent that when you first donate, they simply assume you want to be contacted by phone in the future. That's unacceptable. Why don't they ask you at intake in plain English, "Okay... do you WISH to be contacted by phone about future donations, or would you prefer not to be contacted? If you do wish to be contacted, could you initial here indicating permission to release your number?" Problem solved.

Now that my blood pressure is under control, I plan to donate from time to time, because I want the blood supply to be secure and am willing to do my part. I don't think anyone has the right to judge others for their personal choices or convictions, and find it sad that this board is dripping with judgmental comments.

This is the same with me.  Every time they call me, it makes me not want to donate, just because the calls are annoying.  They also call my home and cell, and they will call me at work.

Am I speaking a foreign language here? My wife drinks plenty of water. The issue is not my wife. She is currently pregnant, and when she went for her most recent blood work, the tech once again had difficulty, was too rough with the blood draw, and caused an injury that required medical attention. The doctor told her she has very small veins and gave her a note to carry indicating which size of needle needs to be used for a successful blood draw. The other thing the doctor told her was that it was "inadvisable" to donate blood. My father-in-law has the same problem whenever he needs to have blood drawn. It's one of those things.

I'll repeat my point yet again, since you apparently missed it the first few times. I AM NOT DISPUTING THE FACT THAT DONATING BLOOD IS A GOOD THING! I have donated myself several times.

The fact that donating blood is essentially good does not mean they need to employ the services of telemarketers. Existing donors know how to book appointments if they wish. It's extremely annoying to receive repeated calls directing you to a donation centre when you (in this case, my wife) have decided after due care and consideration not to donate again.

Combat the lack of donors with an information campaign. It is not necessary to call the same people again and again, particularly those who have asked not to be called. I don't see why this is such an objectionable proposition.

Why do you people insist on bringing up the scarcity of donors? It's a problem. Telemarketers are NOT the solution. In fact, telemarketing is NEVER the solution to ANY problem.

When I went to a donation clinic offered at work, I filled out the form and left the phone number blank. The intake person called me back and demanded that I provide my number. I explained politely that I've had problems with telemarketers from CBS in the past, and don't want my number on file. She initially claimed they couldn't accept my application to donate blood without a phone number for their file. She claimed it had nothing to do with telemarketing (yeah, right). I ended up having to speak to a supervisor before they would agree to process my form without a phone number. I said they were free to contact me my mail, but not by phone. The supervisor agreed and gave the intake person a funny look.

I got my donor card in the mail and went back to donate again, and AGAIN, they took my card and said, "Oh... there's a phone number missing in your file. Could we have your phone number please?" And I had to go through the same process again.

This isn't about donating blood. I think it's great to donate blood. Everyone (who can do so safely) should try it. But I don't hold with telemarketing. Telemarketers are doing a disservice to blood collection by annoying existing donors unnecessarily.

It's the Canadian Blood Service and they called and left a message to say thank you for donating and that my blood has passed the testing procedure and was used to save a life. I'm ecstatic to know that I helped someone.

These people aren't like other charities where half your donation goes into administration fees and salaries. This goes straight into the veins of people in need.

I am type O-, so I will be donating as much as possible, knowing my blood go straight into accident victims and premature babies... I just wish some people would get off their high horse and do the same. Asking for incentives? You've got to be kidding me.
Robbing a cancer patient of blood that will save their life, because you had an experience where your arm was tender for 6 or 8 hours afterwards? I guess if you're that selfish.

Hopefully one day they implement a system where, in case of a blood shortage, blood donors get bumped to the front of the line.

Unacceptable? Unacceptable that the highly trained people were unable to find small veins in an arm? I suggest next time you make sure your wife drinks plenty of water before coming in... if the unacceptable part of the experience was that they couldn't find a vein, well that's just too bad. You know what I would call unacceptable? It's unacceptable that only 4% of canadians donate. I find it unacceptable that people can't put their fear of being poked behind them because I'm sure there are thousands of sick people out there that aren't too fond of being poked - yet they need the blood. But Guess what! Many can't get the blood.. because of people who are too afraid to be poked.
I'm so sorry about being so negative but it's time to look at someone other than you and your wife, and the telemarketers. Think of the people you can help instead.

I understand you had a bad experience... tons of people have veins that are hard to find. But I think complaining about the services is completely besides the point. The point of the matter is Canada is in NEED of blood. And being pushy is the only way we can constantly be reminded of this. If when they call you are reminded of your horrible experience, remember that it's not all about you or your wife. It is about the people out there (and there are A LOT) that NEED that blood. And giving blood is not supposed to be a selfish act. (Like just being curious about your blood type.)
I'm so sorry about your negative experience.. but put the past behind you and remember what it's all about.

After putting off several piercings I wanted for quite some time to donate as often as possible, I finally got them done. Then the aggressive phone calls from CBS started. Unlike some other people have said, I didn't have an appointment to be reminded of - they were calling to tell me they would make one for me, basically. I told them I'd gotten new piercings and would contact them when it had been at least 6 months. They asked when it would be EXACTLY 6 months so they could start calling again! I was at work at the time and didn't have my calendar with me, and they said they'd call again the next day, after I'd checked my calendar. They absolutely called again the next day and asked. I gave them the date I'd gotten my piercings, and they sure as hell called again 6 months to the day. In the meantime, I'd gotten more work done, and told them so. The caller accused me of lying to get out of appointments. After having to deal with several different people calling me every day for almost a week, I finally got them to stop calling me. It's been a couple months and nothing yet. I'm hopeful, but I've had really bad experiences with CBS callers.

These lazy jackwads should work on getting the other 90 plus percent of the population to donate instead of bothering people who do and pissing them off till they stop. It's also very sad that they try to harass people here with their posts in the same way. It has the opppsite effect and soon they will get no blood at all and it will be their own fault that people die.
