So the ruse merely changed from fake magazine debt to fake PDL. What you heard and those bullying calls to the family were indeed serious FDCPA violations.

Really this is extortion dressed as debt collection. As early as possible it's critical to determine if your collector is domestic or yet another South Asian faker. The former you can sue into submission; the latter tend to be out of reach.

My notes from October 2011 on payday loan and "hot check" collectors are linked below.

I have recently been receiving phone call from a Rodney Smith from Legal Services. He said that he was in the process of getting a warrant for my arrest for a payday loan. He had all of my information including some of my family members #. He also told them I was going to jail. I called the company where I had taken the loan out years ago and they had never heard of them. They said it must be a scam. That you can not go to jail for any bills thst is unpaid.

Just this afternoon I to revived a call from a Mr. Steve Philips from Legal Services. He said that National Service Corp. ( which is a magazine company) had filed a law suite against me for some unpaid account that was 6 years ago.

He told me that the Magazine company had hired his company and even gave me all my information including bank information and a case #.

This is very scary and I have to say that please DO NOT GIVE HIM ANYTHING !!!!

I spoke to my attorney and he said that anything like a law suit is sent through the mail or in person. No one has business into asking for payments over the phone.

I still don't know about properly handling this with the proper authorities or how to effectively protect my identity.

Please stop this guy, Steve Phillips, from scamming people as he has obviously been successful in his disgusting, sad and totally inappropriate actions. He should be arrested and sent to prison. As I look at so many messages dated back to 2010 I am appalled that he is still able to get away with such a scam. Think about the people he is targeting and the fact that he has information about people that makes you question weather someone stole your identity or has information to destroy your life. THIS IS A BIG DEAL! He preys on people who have lost spouses, children, parents and gets them to pay him some amount or he will be, "filing with the court." Is anyone going to stop this BAD man?! One things for sure, there is a special place in hell for people like Steve Phillips but until then we should stop him!

This person called and left a message stating, "hi this is Steve Phillips from Legal Services. I'm calling in regard to case number...Please contact me at (888)2436570 regarding a suit that has been brought against you, please contact me as soon as possible. Upon returning his call he proceeded to tell me that in 2004 I ordered subscriptions to Maxim, popular mechanics, Maximum PC ect.. I told him I do not recall ordering these and that it was eight years ago. He proceeded to tell me that the law states that 20 years is the statute of limitations and we could settle this matter if I made a payment of $456.92. I told him that I'm not paying for something that I know nothing about and he proceeded to tell me that I paid for half of the total amount with a visa card that expired in 2012. The thing is this guy is obviously a scam artist but he knew my information. I'm not sure what to do and how to stop him from scamming people. Think of how many elderly people get calls from him stating they owe for their dead husbands owe for a subscription from ten years ago. I wouldn't want my mother getting this call. BEWARE! REPORT!

Ive recieved 4 calls total from Steven Phillips regarding a legal matter with nothing legal about him. Says I purchased and made 4 payments on some kind of magazine subscription for 5 years? Will not provide any kind of evidence just that I owe $1100 but he will take $106. To clear this up or I'll be sued. Well bring it on, any kind of reputable company would not negotiate 90% of the debt to $106 r sue costing double the original amount in fees. Total scam reporting to my attorney and FTC. TOTAL JOKE!

Got a call from this number this morning from a Steve Phillips also claiming that a magazine company is preparing to bring forth a lawsuit against me for a magazine subscription service I supposedly signed up for back in 2005. Claimed I had set up payments via  credit card and claimed to have the credit card information and that the expiration date on the credit card is set to expire later this year (2012).  When I askedfor paperwork I was told that the only way they could give me paperwork is if the magazine company went ahead with their plan to sue me for just under $1,000.  I again asked if there was any information they could send to me and Steve Phillips stated that he could e-mail the paperwork he has been given on so I gave him my e-mail address, well one of them anyway, and this Steve Phillips stated he had to scan the documents but that he would send them to me via e-mail so that I can review the file.  Of course he waited to this point to ask if my computer had the ability to read PDF format files and I assured him that it could.  I wrote down the number (888-243-6570) and asked for his name.  He then claimed that the phone number is his own personal line that will ring at his desk when I call back.  After waiting for 10 mins with no e-mail appearing, it doesn't take very long to scan and send an e-mail to someone, I had my husband listen in to my next call to this person in which no one answered when I called.  However, I did get a direct call back from Steve Phillips a minute later with him stating he saw that I called and that he's sorry he wasn't able to answer the phone.  I told him that's fine and that I had just gotten off the phone with my state attorney's office and that they recommended I have him/his company (Steve Phillips/Legal Services) send all paperwork signed returned receipt certified mail and to include any/all paperwork with my signature on them proving that I agreed to the magazine subscription and all other paperwork about this case including information about the credit card that was supposedly used. Once I stated that all conversation by Mr. Steve Phillips stopped and he stated he would forward my request to the appropriate party (in my state) and that party would then make a decide on how they wanted to proceed with the case, but that the paperwork will be sent to the appropriate parties. I stated to him again that the paperwork MUST be sent to me signed return receipt certified mail per the state attorney's request. To which Mr. Steve Phillips replied "I was not arguing with you or trying to tell you otherwise was I?" To which I told him no but I was making sure he understood my request.  Mr. Phillips then stated again that he would do as I asked and send my request to the party here in my state for them to review, gather, and send me the information in the manner I have requested.  So we'll see what happens in the coming weeks.

Got a call this morning from Mr. Steve Phillips stating he's from "Legal Services" and that there is a pending lawsuit waiting to be filed against me for a magazine subscription I am supposed to have signed up for back in 2005 for 4 or 5 different magazines that was suppose to cost $48 a month over the course of 4 years?. That the subscription had been signed up to be paid for by a credit card that he said has an expiration date for this year (2012).  I don't even have a credit card and haven't had one for YEARS !!  Yet, up until late 2007 the magazine company had supposedly been receiving payments for the subscription and that in that same year the magazine company had suddenly not been able to receive payment for the subscription and couldn't get in touch with me to continue to receive payments on the subscription. Then they supposedly sent my account to several collection agencies, none of which were named, and those alleged collection agencies never sent me any requests for payment about this matter.

Mr.Steve Phillips then finished up his "speal" by stating his company has been hired by the magazine company to act as a mediator between he magazine company and myself. Stating that the company is wanting to pursue a lawsuit against me for almost $1,000 which would include legal fees, court costs, attorney fees, paperwork fees, accrued interest and the remaining subscription payments.

Mr. Steve Phillips then stated that since they (the magazine company) are willing to hold off on filing a lawsuit as they wish to avoid a drawn out court battle.  His company was hired by the magazine company to act as a legal mediator/go between for both parties (the magazine company and myself) and that as such the magazine company was originally wanting $495, but that they were willing to negotiate with the magazine company and were able to agree that the magazine company is willing to settle out of court for 25% of that price, or as quoted to me they are willing to settle for $116 if I were to pay the balance today (Mar 2012). That once payment was made they would send out a letter in the mail stating that the debt has been paid in full and  releasing me of any and/or all further financial obligation with the magazine subscription company.

However, with my being skeptical about calls such as this, I asked Mr. Steve Phillips to please send me copies of the paperwork he has about this alleged contract so that I could review the contract and information before agreeing to anything.  Mr. Steve Phillips then proceeded to tell me that he couldn't do that as the magazine company would have to do that and it would require them to file the lawsuit against me and that I would then be served legal paperwork in the form of a summons stating their intent in which I would then have to respond to the summon stating that I either I agree with the charges or if I protest the validity of the charges.  That either way, I would be leaving the magazine company no choice but to pay the $900+ the magazine company would have in legal fees, attorney costs, interest, paperwork fees, and of course the remaining balance on the magazine subscription.  When I asked again, making sure I ask for the paperwork his company has received he stated that he could if I had an e-mail address and asked if I have the ability to open PDF files that page 1 would have the payment information he "discussed" with me (the $116) and the 2nd page would have the information on all phone numbers, physical addresses, and credit cards used  stating again that I do not know of and have absolutely no recollection of having ever signed up for such a magazine subscription.  Mr. Steve Phillips then stated he would e-mail me the paperwork he has asking if I have the ability to open a PDF file.  I assured him I did and gave him one of my e-mail addresses.  He then stated that he would send me the e-mail and that after I had a chance to review it that I could call him back at this 888-243-6570 and when asking for his name, he gave his name again as Steve Phillips and stated that the number is his direct line and will ring at his desk when I call back.

I wanted a little over 10 mins for the e-mail to arrive and even checked the Spam folder without success.  I also spoke with my husband and so after having formulated a plan I called Mr. Steve Phillips' number back and got no response.  Surprisingly after a little less than 2 minutes Mr. Steve Phillips called back stating how sorry he was that he missed my call.  I then assured him that it was alright and then informed him that I had just got off the phone with the state's attorney's office and that they recommended I have him/his company (Steve Phillips/Legal Services) send all paperwork signed returned receipt certified mail including any/all paperwork with my signature agreeing to the magazine subscription and all other paperwork about this case. Once I stated that all conversation stopped and Mr. Steve Phillips stated he would forward my request to the appropriate party (in my state) and that party would then decide on how they wanted to proceed, but that the paperwork will be sent to the appropriate parties. I once again stated that the paperwork must be sent to me signed return receipt certified mail per the state attorney's request.  To which the response I got was that he was not arguing with my request and that he would do as I asked.  So we'll see what happens in the coming weeks.

A man called today for my son, who hasn't lived at home for some time now.  He said his name was Steve Phillips from Legal Services.  I asked what the company he was calling from and again he stated Legal Services.  I asked where they were located and when he said Buffalo NY I chuckled but continued taking the info down.  Then when he asked what I was laughing about I said, "You are in New York calling my son in Florida."  He immediately got irate and said, "We will have an attorney in your area contact you!" and hung up on me.

I did about 2 minutes of research on the internet and found his phone number and called him back.  I refreshed his memory as to whom I was that he just hung up on me and told him to loose the phone number and never call back then hung up on him.

Our phone number is on the DO NOT CALL REGISTRY - Isn't there someone out there that can do something about this IDIOT!!

I received a call this morning from Steve (no last name was given) with Legal Services(Buffalo, NY) and I?m being threatened with court summons for theft of money owed for some magazine bill 5 years ago if not paid in full(Editors Readers Services). If I paid right now$104.65, if the Attorney got involved and went to court it could be +$700.00. Then came across this site and your blogs, Thank You. Ask Steve for a number if I had any questions, this is what he gave me 888-243-6570.  Just got done contacting FTC (Federal Trade Commission and file a complaint. 1-877-382-4357, next I will be contacting police and maybe the local news!

Yes they do ask for money.  A man Steven Phillips informed me that if I didnt pay then the magazine company that would be taking me to court would push for legal fees, court costs and etc totaling $950 and that I could settle and have this all closed out for $176.  I asked for some kind of official document emailed to me and after not receiving anything for a week I finally got a Word document with the header E.R.M and a P.O. Box in Buffalo.  I looked up E.R.M which led me to Everest Recovery.  I then inquired with them and they told me that the Claim # I received was no where in thier system nor was my last name.

My in-laws got a call from Steve Phillips from Legal Services today regarding a legal matter. He asked to speak with my husband, when my FIL said he didn't live there he asked if I was his sons wife and that the matter mostly obtained to me. He told my FIL that it was about something I had done and he wanted to get the matter cleared up so I didn't have to get taken to court.

I have no idea what this could be about but when I looked up the # I have found all these other complaints about possible fraud. I tried calling the # back 3 times and all I got was a busy signal.

This morning the same A' hole Steve Phillips called my job, of all places and left a message with the receptionist saying that I was going to get sued and that I needed to return his call a.s.a.p. When I called the fool back I asked him what was it pertaining to, and he stated that it was from a magazine subscription contract dating back to the year 2006, which I never had or received. So I asked him "Really, this is what you called my job for and why you told the receptionist I was getting sued" I told him not to call me again so then he tries to threaten me and tells me to get prepared for a lawsuit. That is when I lost it and gave him a few choice words of my own. He had no case number, nor did he have the company information that he was calling on the behalf of so I hung up on him. I believe this is inappropriate behavior and that these are just people trying to scam you for money so I filed a complaint with the FTC myself and if I get more information I am going to sue Steve for misconduct by calling my job and telling my co-worker personal information, eventhough the information was untrue. Let him call me one more time!!! I think they change their names because they know it is an illegal practice, but I am the one who does not like to be pushed and I don't like BS so we will see where this goes cause I am ready for a fight especially with something this stupid and unprofessional..don't fall for their foolishness.!
