My parents just got ripped of by this company TAS, they are thiefs and I have reported them to the attorney general.  Threatened my 70 year parents with taking their cars, levying their banks accounts etc. They told them they were going to have papers served to them in 24 hours, but if they made payment arrangements today they would reduce the the debt from $7000 to $2900.  My mom was scared to death and gave them a prepaid visa number with $500.  I am so disgusted and upset I can't see straight.  These a**holes should be in prison.

These people contacted my x-husband.  We've been divorced for 18 years.  We don't  live in the same state.  These peope are nuts.  Even if there was a bad debt which there isn't it was written off years ago so they can take their case number and stuff it where the sun doesn't shine.

Hi Michelle
Did you find out who this guy is? I have a clean record and I am debt free. This guy Michael Jones called me and left a message under a name I have not used since High School. He stated a complaint was filed against me!!! Is this a joke!

This company is basically cowboy collection agents who are paid minimum wage and have received your credit account as a 3rd referral, meaning they get about 70 percent of what they collect.
No real business or collection agency will ever call you and tell you they are serving you in 24 hours, nor will they continually contact 3rd parties for information about you.  Your local Attorney General's office has a complaint system in place to deal with agencies who are breaking the law.  Make sure you call them if you hear from these people and put a complaint in place.  After they receive so many, they have their business lisences revoked.  When I quoted FDCA laws back at them such as statute of limitation (when a debt is 7 years old it is in most cases no longer pursuable) 3rd party disclosure acts and other information, the abusive dork on the phone got even more flustered.  A collection agency will only file a lawsuit against you if they have certain knowledge of income, assets, location and ability to pay.  Otherwise they are out legal fees, court costs, process serving costs, and lots of time.  This company relies upon your not knowing the law, common business practice and scaring you into paying whatever it takes so you can get them off your back.  Anytime a collector gets abusive with you, guaranteed they don't have what it takes to make a case against you.

This guy, "Mr.Brown" started calling saying that he was with a collection agency andthat my husband owed $3300 for a MasterCard that he's NEVER HAD. The 1st time i spoke w him, he told me that he had tried to serve my husband with papers 3 times (however when i asked him 4 the adress, it was the wrong adress) and put me in an ultimatum situation of putting 20% down by the end of the day or they were going to take us to court. Keep in mind, i'm sitting at home with twin 3-year-olds as he's going on and on about the different kinds of payments we could make. My husband works on a pltform, like i could just go talk to him right?? The next morning starting at 8:00am, he left a message stating that i needed to call him back immediately so that he could make a decision as to where to go with my husband's case. When i called back, he stated that yes they needed to make a descision on the case or they were going to serve him with the papers at his Corporate Office. Papers that have NEVER gone thru the mail, never been seen. He also stated that they had sent us a letter over 45 days ago, so why is this the 1st time they're calling? We got disconnected so i called him back and told him that i had spoke with my husband, and he had said that it was bogus and harrassment. I told him not to call me anymore, that he could get ahold of my husband. I was on my cell, and it dropped the call. So, I called back to make sure he had gotten the message, he was VERY rude and stated that they had verified my husband's place of employment and were going to just serve him at his corporate office. Then he advised me to NOT CALL THE NUMBER AGAIN. When i asked to speak with a supervisor, he told me he was the manager AND DO NOT CALL BACK. Now, how many agencies tell you NOT to call back after u threaten them with a harrassment charge???

This is a collection company. You need to know the law. In  California, nobody can do anything until they take you to court and receive a judgement against you. You would have to  be served first with a notice stating all of the facts of the lawsuit and a court date. Then you show up (or not) and the judge will make a judgement, either against you or for you. Then, if the person suing you wins, nothing will happen for at least 31 days after the date of the judgement. At that time they could put a lien  against your wages, your bank account or your personal property. But, bear in mind  that the original crediter sold your account to this collection service. They would have to sue you in the county in which you reside before anything can go forward. When they call, just tell them to have a nice day and hang up.  Do not try to talk to these people as they want to do their best to scare you in to paying. Remember, they have rules that they must abide by. Tell them that you are going to record the conversation and you must ask them if that is alright with them, if they say no, hang up. if they say ok, you must tell them every 30 seconds  that you are recording or there must be a beep  every 30 seconds. Have a nice day.

It's a sad time indeed when needy families who have a priority of paying their mortgages under threat of losing their homes are being inundated by ruthless bill collectors. When you lose your job and health insurance, and your options are $1,000 per month or less on unemployment with which to pay for food, utilities, mortgage, car payments, medical bills, and credit cards, what do you think is lowest on the totem pole? You got it. The Credit Cards. That doesn't mean you won't pay them once you're employed, but in the meantime, it's SURVIVAL TIME. You do what you can!

There is help out there, including public assistance and food banks. Don't be ashamed to take advantage of them, especially when you have a family to feed.

Angel Food Ministries is one. This food bank, and others in Central Florida, are helping families save money on food bills. They are available to both the unemployed and underemployed, and you're not required to fill out forms to show proof of need. The best part: For the price of one restaurant meal, you buy enough food to feed a family of four for a week.

For more information on Angel Food Ministries, visit Angel Food Ministries at http://www.angelfoodministries.com for a location near you.

Keep the Faith! God Bless You All!

This economy has resulted in persons who have always had perfect credit now finding themselves in debt, and even worse, in a debt they can't pay off. People are losing their jobs, their cars, their homes. To top it all off, they are being blamed for being unemployed, and unscrupulous bill collectors are further maligning their names by calling all aquaintances over said person's lifetime.

To make matters worse, there's a disturbing trend in current hiring practices. Not only is unemployment still at an all-time high, but employers such as Sony, many recruiters, and many job posters on Cragslist are now including the following requirements in their ads: "No Unemployed Candidates Will Be Considered At All," "Client will not consider/review anyone NOT currently employed regardless of the reason," and "Must be currently employed," as if it weren't bad enough that all companies were doing credit checks on candidates, disregarding the impact of unemployment and foreclosure on credit ratings since 2008.

Apparently, there is no acknowledging the effect of the recession on highly qualified candidates, many of whom are now part of the long-term unemployed (46 percent of the current unemployed population). It would appear that companies are willing to steal talent away from their competitors intead of hiring the equally talented folks who are currently in the market. A better stance would be to resolve to hiring ONLY THE UNEMPLOYED.

Yet, even government officials, including Senator Judd Gregg, are putting the onus on the unemployed; this, despite the fact that our nation is still in a jobs recession, despite the temporary census jobs. More than 29 million Americans are still without work or forced into part-time work, making it a real jobless rate of 16.6 percent. Nearly 7 million people have been jobless for over 26 weeks (hence, the term "long-term unemployed") -- more than any other time since the Great Depression. To reach full-employment, we still need more than 22 million new jobs.

Everyone seems to forget that Wall Street was the real cause of the current Recession, not the hapless unemployed. In any case, never before has the phrase, "it's better to look for a job while you still have one," ever resonated as powerfully.

Slimeball, yellow-belly, coward? All of the above. I have Cancer and lost my insurance due to job loss. You can imagine my medical bills. I will re-pay when I'm back on my feet, but not before. Can't squeeze blood from a stone. This waste of Oxygen wouldn't listen. Cursed me out. Hope he rots in hell. No, better: Hope he loses his job and gets Cancer! Wouldn't wish it on a better candidate.

Extremely unpleasant company to work with. Bullying tactics, including calling others and warning them about me. Going through divorce and a job loss at the time, and this situation only made matters worse. This guy was unscrupulous and untrustworthy. I told others to ignore him, and I'll ignore him, too. If it gets worse, I'll just sick my attorney on him. Counter-sue. I can do what it takes, too.

This underhanded caller left no stone unturned when it came to contacting people and maligning my name. He even called my first ex-wife, to whom I hadn't spoken in over 30 years, as well as her mother!
I didn't even know where these people lived anymore! Yet, somehow he found them, though he couldn't find me!

When I called the number, I tried to explain my circumstances. In 2005, I suffered a case of stolen identity. My bank account was emptied, my credit cards were full of fraudulent charges, including purchases of software and hardware products from Canada and South Africa! My bank worked with me to waive some of the fees, but I had to call the creditors one-by-one, explaining my checking account and credit cards had been hacked!

Some creditors refunded the charges. Others did not.

Oh, and he never gave away his name or the name of the company.
He was as threatening, bullying, and humiliating as a Mafia hit man, but he was also anonymous.

Eventually, people blocked his calls, as did I.
If he wants to have a logical and professional conversation about my trials and tribulations, I may consider meeting him, face-to-face. Otherwise, he will get nowhere.

I filed a police report, of course, but that was just time wasted on paperwork that went nowhere.
They had more important crime to fight.

In any case, this excuse for a human being called everyone and their brother -- except me.

This coward did not face the one he was hunting.

Instead, he used humiliation (by tracking down all my family, ex-family, friends, and enemies) and telling them of my supposed "criminal activities for non-payment of debts". Though he didn't use those EXACT words, he heavily implied that I was involved in unsavory dealings, and always told the people he called that I was in "deep, deep TROUBLE that would only get worse if I didn't contact him."

I have never owned a credit card and saved up to buy my car cash. I paid my way through college in addition to scholarships and grants. I had no debt, no husband, no children, and always paid my rent and bills on time.

Yet, I was harassed almost daily, morning, noon, and night.

But, when my family and friends were contacted, I knew I had to fight back.

Unfortunately, I didn't make enough to pay a lawyer, yet I knew this was a BOGUS DEBT!
I HAD NO DEBT!!!! But was harrassed DAILY BY DEBT COLLECTORS!!!

It didn't help that I had such a common name!

So, I fought back myself, after researching the laws.
When a friend of mine, a single mom lost her house and job, and was harrassed night and day, I gave her this information, too.

I said, "There has to be a law!" And sure enough, there is: The Fair Debt Collection Act.

Read some of the information the research I found, and fight back!
If you can hire an attorney, do so, but if you can't, you may just find you can fight on your own.
I did.

My caller called everyone except me, and I'm not hard to find, about a debt that was included in a Bankruptcy when I divorced 14 years ago.

They called my ex-in-laws, my parents, my siblings, my sons and daughter-in-laws, my neighbors, my boss!!!!, my friends, and scared them into contacting me. They feared he was a "bounty hunter" or violent "ex-lover."

Not once did this caller identify himself or the company, but he did give several people he  a "case number" and this 888 phone number to call, and told them I was in a "lot of trouble"!

Several people called the number, and the call was answered by a sweet-voiced woman who simply said, "Yes. Can I help you?" Still no name for the company.

These bullies are B*****DS and they will get their due. When they called my employer, I HAD ENOUGH! I fought back. AND I WON!!!!!

I'll tell you how. Do what I did.
Do not pay these HEATHENS a lousy, stinking dime.

They told me that I owed 3500 dollars and said that if I did not pay at the moment i had the guy on the phone that they would be repossessing my car as payment for the credit card. i had never heard of the credit card and when i told the guy (john mason) on the phone, he told me "you can tell me whatever you want i have heard them all before" and then when i told him there was no way i was able to pay he started cutting me off and not letting me get a word in edgewise. very skeevy. i even asked the guy, "how can i trust you if you wont listen to me and are being very hostile towards me" and he said that he could not be hostile to me if he was not raising his voice... he just basically threatened to have my car reposessed and then accused me of not paying my bills. i was under the impression that bullying is illegal. so not only do you have that, but he was trying to get money out of me without letting me verify that it was even a real debt. I have looked everywhere and can find no sign of the company TAS online anywhere. he kept telling me that he did not want to argue with me. and when i told him that i felt like maybe i was the victim of identity theft he told me, "no you ran this credit card up and then refused to pay your bills." and i asked him how he could know for sure that i was not ripped off and he could not answer me. not pleasant at all.
