got this message on the machine twice.  called back today and they asked for my accnt #.  they had no idea why i was calling and there was no fraudulent activity.  informed us that there was some phishing going on and to be very careful who we give out information to.  they also told us this number was NOT affiliated w/ Wells Fargo, however, it did connect me to them so what the hell?

Got a message today on my answering machine, same as previous posters: wachovia asking me to call back 888-257-9932 because of suspiscious actvities, Glad I googled the number and found this forum. Number is legit.  Suspisious activity was found.

Received a call at 8:30 AM 06/08/09 wanting me to call this number and verify activity on my Wachovia account.
I called the number and the automated system asked me to provide my credit card number so that they could verify activity on my account.
I hung up and called Wachovia direct and they said they did not recognize this number.

hmm, why doesn't my online banking say anything?  why have I not received an email?  if this is legitimate, it is still a poor service.

Sher: I got a call from the same number at exactly the same time at night! they said they were from my bank and wanted to verify activity on my card also. I didn't actually answer. they left a message and i called back. I got an automated system asking for my credit card number. No way was i going to do that. I called a number to my bank I knew. They said they had no record of that number and there was nothing wrong with my card activity.

ATTENTION-- Confirmed: this number 888-257-9932 is Wachovia, for real. It is safe. I checked with Wachovia. They do indeed own that number.

This number that called me: 888-257-9932 sounded real fishy at first, since it was an unsolicited call. They asked for my debit card number -- and, the call came to my work number of all places instead of my cell phone. About five minutes before I received the call, I had tried to purchase a service online but the payment didn't seem to go through. So I just bailed on that purchase.

Then, I got this automated call, supposedly from Wachovia, asking me first for my expiration date on my debit card, so, seeing no harm there, I entered it, Then, they asked for my debit card number. So then it dawns on me that maybe, just maybe-- what if this was NOT Wachovia! Hmmm.
So, I did not enter my card number and I hung up.

I then called Wachovia Bank at the 888-WACHOVIA number (one I'm familiar with using) and got to a real person. They looked up the phone number that the automated call gave me: 888-257-9932. The bank rep told me that number was a Wachovia number for sure and that it was legitimate. It is a bank charge fraud message sent out to people who have some questionable activity, as in perhaps a bogus charge attempting on your account.
So it turns out in my case that when I was on that website trying to purchase something for $4.00 -- they tried to charge my debit card with $44.00 instead! Wow! So that site was a scam and try to trick unsuspecting customers out of their money. Turns out, my balance, THANKFULLY was under $44.00, so the charge did not go through. And then Wachovia called me. So they did their job in notifying me. I appreciate that they knew to alert me. In addition to the $44 dollars the website tried to charge, they charged that $44 three times! ... for a total of $132!!  Ouch.  It's a good thing I didn't have the money for that amount in there then or it may have charged to my account. But Wachovia caught the unusual activity and called me.

So, everyone rest at ease on that 888-257-9932 phone number. It was really Wachovia -- confirmed. But don't take my word for it. You may also call 888-WACHOVIA to confirm for yourself. that's the safest way. The Wach bank rep told me I did the right thing by calling the regular Wachovia number to check on it.

The problem is, with receiving a call from Wachovia that you aren't expecting, there's no way to confirm that they are really Wachovia or any other legit bank. All you have is a caller ID number (if you have that service). You get no Verisign-type assurance or "secure" phone line when you get a phone call as you would see on a secure website, for example. I wish Wachovia could look into this to figure out a system so us bank customers can be assured that the caller is indeed our bank.

Bottom line, do check with your own bank to verify unusual phone calls from numbers you don't know who are asking for your private info.

Hey all, The on-line banking doesn't say anything cause the charges were denied. The Number 888-257-9932 is an automated security from Wachovia Bank. It is intended to call you at the time the transaction attempts to post to your account. It asks you for your card number in case your phone number is incorrect. I had the same call, but the machine dialed my Parents becasue my number was incorrect. My father has the same name and banks with Wachovia also. If you call the 1800wachovia number ask for the Fraud department. They will be able to verify this is a good phone number. The three (3) call reps that answered when I called 800wachovia didn't have any clue about this phone number. But talk to the fraud people and Bingo. LOL

Got a call at 6:30pm Friday night on my answering machine from this number saying they were with Wachovia and were calling to check suspicious charges on my Visa check card.  Message said to call back with my check card number ready for verification. - Right.  After checking this site and my bank I deleted the message.

They called and asked me to call back verifying some activity on my Wachovia account. I called Wachovia directly (number on file) and they had no unusual activity on my account...This is a common SCAM, be alert and careful. NEVER give any personal information.

Call the Wachovia Fraud Department.  The number is legitimate. If you do not believe it, call the Wachovia main office number on the back of your card and ask them about it, and they will verify the number is legitimate and even transfer you to it. This happened to me today and I was suspicious, but it was all legitimate after talking to Wachovia.

got a call from this number about 1 minute after I tried making a transaction 3 times online. The product was from a different country and was declined all 3 times. After this number called me I spoke with them and gave them the info they asked for. Immediately after I finished speaking with them I called wachovia directly, they transfered me over to their fraud department. I asked the rep if there was any record of me speaking with a rep before her. She stated "YES" I had.

With this being said it IS wachovias Fraud department. IF you speak with wachovia directly and not their fraud department specifically they WILL NOT have record of this. They are separate entities but the same company.

This IS Wachovia Fraud protection services. I tried to make a purchase online using my Visa check card, & it was denied, due to a deposit not being posted until tonight.

Why doesn't Wachovia use their name on caller id system screens??  It would save us ALL a LOT of grief!!!  Ask them that question when you get a call from this number. I did, & the rep told me it is supposed to have "Wachovia Fraud Services" entered on the Caller ID screen!! .

This phone number to Wachovia is legit. I just got off the phone with them regarding researching a fraudulent check that I received in the mail for a work at home scam and they verified for me that this check indeed is a fake/fraudulent check.  They also were very professional and helpful. So you can trust this number and when the automated system asks for your c.c. # just push the pound (#) on the phone without putting in your card number and it would transfer you to a live representative. Good Service.

Got a call from this number at 9:30 at night. They said they wanted to verify some charges on my son's account (he's 24), so I didn't give them my number, but asked to talk to a manager. They put me on hold for a long time so I hung up.

I did not try to purchase anything online, or anywhere and I got the call I think it is bogus

I received the same calland when I called they wanted my cc account#, when I gave it to them, I was told they couldn't locate my account and asked for another account number, like checking, so I gave it to them and they said they still couldn't locate my account and wanted my social security number. I said I wasn't going to give it to them. They said they needed it because they didn't know who I was. I said, I don't know who you are and you're not getting my social security number. I ended the call and called wells fargo. They told me that they weren't trying to get ahold of me and that there is no problem with my account, as I was told. I was forced to change my checking account and my credit card accounts to new ones, as my account numbers were compromised. The lesson I learned is, never call the number you were left on an answering machine and give out any account information. If you do get some sort of message asking you phone, always call the number on the back of you credit card, so that you know that you are dealing with the bank.

got the message from an unknown number to call.  Called in the normal Wachovia #, and they confirmed it was a valid phone number.  They found $2.18 suspicious activity, so I'm glad I called them back.

The number is good call the number on my card glad I did there were fraudulent charges,,,, ô¿ô

Look, there are many reasons to be concern when it comes to suspicious phone calls about your financial standings. This number is legit, however that's not to say that  someone isn't number spoofing the legit 888-257-9932. So what do you do, listen to what they tell you is the issue, don't give away any personal info just get an understanding of what has occurred on your account, then call  a trusted Wachovia Customer Service Number (on the back of your card) or go to a bank branch directly to see if its true. Both, those who say its not real, and those who say its legit, could be right if someone was number spoofing a legit Wachovia number  :)

I received this call today and was skeptical so i called the wachovia customer service # on my card directly and the number is from their fraud department it's not a scam.

They are using this again.  888-257-9932 is an active scam!

I got a call from this number yesterday regarding my Wachovia Visa check card.  I don't know if this number is legit or a fraud, however I do know that I do not have and never have had an account with Wachovia.  Seems to me that they are just phishing.

and for all the people who say it is legit.  What goes around comes around.  May it be when you least expect it.

scam.  I went to the bank today with the phone number.  They said it was a scam. Wachovia will never call you  and ask you to key in your account number.   NEVER.

Absolutely genuine. Spoke to a rep who was checking an online transaction that I made the day before after a long period of no activity on the card.

and at the Wachovia site at the FRAUD AND ABUSE section I copied this directly
"(888) 647-3648 during business hours or 24 hours a day at (800) WACHOVIA (800-922-4684)."

THOSE are the numbers
