Check with them to make sure that someone did not steal your identity and apply or open account. I have had this happen to me, they were cashing checks and everything and make sure to check your credit report to make sure that it is accurate.

This is not a valid BB&T number.  Anytime you are cold-called and asked for personal information a red flag should immediately be raised.

Received the call this afternoon, and I did not answer (I don't answer unidentified numbers).  They left a voicemail for me.  Caller was BB&T, and this was a courtesy call from them about my account.  When I called back, they identified themselves as BB&T and proceeded to tell me what the issue was.  They did not ask for any personal information that could have possibly resulted in money being removed from my account or personal information being given out.

Ok, the # 8882598462 is for BB&T. It is the overdraft dept.  I have worked in that dept. It is by far the worst job I've ever had, mostly by treatment by clients.  They do not publish the # because we are not the fix it dept. We are a pre charge off loss prevention dept. It is not a published # and it does not show in your account when we call like some #s do. As far as all the people who do not have an account with BB&T, have you ever thought that the phone # you have could have been someone else's at one point since the telephone was invented. Wrong #s happen especially with all the prepaid phones out there. People just plain do not update their info. If you call back in give them the # they can look it up and remove it. If you don't the calls will continue. We do not always leave our names on messages because you can speak with anyone that answers. We all have the same access. If your branch says its not valid have them pick up the phone and call for you. We can verify our inner bank ID to them.  I have no problem if I had a client on the phone that didn't feel comfortable I give my name and our # and refer u to a branch.

Its BB&T I have an account with them and its overdawn by a 123.00.  the local branch isnt calling this is the collection dept calling... I live in ATL

This is BBT and they were just calling to inform me about an overdraft charge after it was already cleared up. They are not a scam they just verify who you are.

You are Not telling the truth! I just called my bank and they NEVER heard of this number! They also told me if anyone calls from their bank, it would be a live person, not a recording! Jerk.

Thank you for taking the time to type this! I called my bank and they told me they do NOT have this number in their system and that if we EVER got a call from them, it would NOT be a recording. A live person would call you. PEOPLE... DO NOT EVER SPEAK WITH SOMEONE WHO CALLS YOU! CALL YOUR LOCAL BANK AND GET THE REAL SCOOP FROM THEM!

Claiming to be BB&T - spoke with BB&T representative at a local branch bc the number would not work. Fake call. Accounts nowhere near overdrawn. It's 120% fake.

I wouldn't answer if you DONT have a BB & T account. However I do,and I was aware my acct was in the neg., but don't get paid till next week and hadn't yet called them. They told me EXACT amount i was due and didn't have to give any shady info. They told me if i pay it on X day that my account would not be cancelled. Simple as that. ALTHOUGH i did look up the number before i called it back. All is good, actually saved me a trip to my bank to deal with the BS.

My 8 year old has received multiple calls from this number and we have never banked with BB&T so it can't be a call to let us know our account is overdrawn.

I just got off the phone with the REAL BB&T has no record of this number. I called my bank directly instead of calling this 888 number....this one IS A SCAM. The BB&T bank has a record of it now and is also reporting it and told me to call the police and report it to them because they now have a 'phishing scam' department in most states.

SOME OF THE comments here seem to be placed by the scammer's. NEVER CALL THESE NUMBERS BACK 1st. Call your bank directly.

if you call your bank directly they will tell you this is their corporate office and is done through an automated system. It has been years since account overages were handled at the branch level unless you have made a special request of your branch.

It is BB&T. Just got off the phone with them. It was a courtesy call informing me my account was overdrawn. The message left just asked that I call regarding important account info. It as exactly what they claimed.

Just got a call from 888-259-8462. As with the others, it is a recording saying something is wrong with the account, blah, blah and call this number with the odd hours. I have noticed on caller id, when we get a call from the REAL BB&T it shows up as "BB&T" ... THIS number shows up as BBNT. Totally wrong for the bank. Obviously something set up to fool people into giving out their bank account info. Oh.. and when the real BB&T calls, it's a person. In all the years and years we've dealt with the, they have never, ever called with a recording. Plus... they know my name. Not a generic message.

I got a call from this number and received the same message.  I actually did call it back and I hung up when it said that it was an attempt to collect a debt because I don't have any loans or credit cards with BB&T.  It also comes up as BBNT on my caller id rather than the "&" symbol which is what it should be.  I called the correct BB&T number which is 1-800-BANKBBT  (please look this up for yourself).  They have no outstanding debts for me and said that their number would not have come up this way.  This is certainly a phishing scam.  Do not give them any information!

I have gotten repeated calls from this number as well; always let the machine pick up. Glad I did not call them. Why isn't BB&T doing anything about this this since their company name and rep are at stake. Seems to me that they would want to prosecute these people! Maybe I did not read far enough down in the comments, but what is the scam about?

deltadawn is correct. I have an account with BB&T. I had some issues and had my account overdrawn, which had it at a negative for almost a week. This number (8882598462) called and left messages, claiming to be BB&T. I called the number, and it was in fact BB&T. And no, I'm not a part of gang trying to get your money either.

I returned the call and they answer that it's BB&T and say that information during the call will be monitored and recorded. The lady that I spoke to never stated her name (which if you bank with BB&T, you know that's incredibly unusual. They always want you to know who you are speaking with.) When I asked if there was something I needed to do for them, she said that they were with the overdraft part of the bank. I asked why my bank isn't the on who calls and she stated that they have been doing it for 4 years now. (I was told by my bank when I opened my account that they would be the ones personally taking care of my accounts and notifying me of anything.) I told her that I could handle my accounts with my local branch and she said "yes, ma'am" and didn't even try to get me to "correct my overdrawn" account. Strange as well for a company that wants to notify you of something. At no point during my conversation did I disclose any of my information, not even my name, and they never asked for it. It's my belief that they are looking for willing people to respond to their calls and aren't worried about those who guard their information. Please be careful with personal information.

I just got a call this morning from this number and called my bank.... They haven't tried to reach me and everything is in good standing. Please be careful of this caller whoever it is, because it is not BB&T.
