They called me about SAT prep for my son.  It was a very strange call.  When I asked, "So you are selling a program?", she said, "Thank you. Have a nice day."  She then hung up. She had said she was from the SAT Prep Center.  They obviously are not a reputable business.

My spouse received a call from this number on 1/7/09.  The caller asked to speak to my daughter's mother or father.  When my spouse stated she was speaking with the mother, the caller hung up.

An unidentified woman from an unidentified company (until I asked and she said "University Prep") gave me my dd's name and address and told me that my dd expressed an interest in receiving help for SAT prep.

She spoke very quickly, giving only vague information about this "program".

She said it was a 30-day free trial interactive cd-rom and then she asked me to "secure" it with my credit card number.  I immediately asked for a number I could reach her at and SHE HUNG UP.

When I get home from work every day, there are a ton of hang-ups on my answering machine from this company, sometimes as many as 12 in a 6 hour span.
Today, I received an email from my daughter's high school principal who informed parents that this company apparently tries to make it seem as if the company is contacting parents with the school's cooperation and blessing.  Nothing could be further from the truth!  The principal said that no one in the district knew about this company until several parents called the district offices and school to complain about their children's names and phone numbers being given out.  We were assured that this was NOT the case - our school district is unaware of how the company got the personal information which they used.
I, too, wonder how they get around the DNC list - I'm on the national list and my state list.  I have to wonder if they bought the info from another company who legitimately does business with the school; for instance, the class ring company or the company which takes the school photos.

From my short research on the Net, there are at least three numbers that these jokers call from:  The one here (888-260-1222), plus (888-260-4306) and (866-490-3109).  I got two calls (see previous post) -- same person, different numbers.  First call was from this number here (...1222) and the second from (...3109).  I didn't personally get a call from (...4306), but I know that number is them, too.

Another name this company goes by is the "American Education Foundation."

BEWARE THE UNIVERSITY PREP CENTER.

A woman called and identified herself as "Karen" calling from the "University Prep Center."  She said that my 9th-grade son had filled out a form expressing interest in their CD-ROM's for SAT/ACT preparation.  The cost for the two CD's is $199.

To use their program properly, your child is supposed to work with their CD-ROM's for 20 minutes three times a week -- until graduation!  Graduation is 3.5 years away for my son; what's the chance of his sticking with this program for that long??

She went on to discuss the company's "guarantee," which is that IF their program is properly followed, your child's score on the SAT will increase by a minimum of 200 points.  The guarantee on the ACT is a 4 point minimum increase.  Well, it is IMPOSSIBLE to make this claim -- because there is NO BENCHMARK against which they can measure an increase.  How can they possibly know what scores my child would make on the SAT or ACT if he DOES NOT use their materials?  They must have some sort of crystal ball.

She also stated that it was crucial to take the PSAT right NOW so that my son can identify which areas he most needs to work on.  Is my son's PSAT score the benchmark that the company going to use?  Why is that a valid benchmark?  And what about the ACT?  There is no Pre-ACT test.

Finally Karen asked which credit card would I be using today?  I told Karen (who talked very fast and was not very polite) that I was not going to give her my credit card number since I had not initiated the call.  I told her that I'd call her back in 5 minutes if I was interested and that during that 5 minutes I was going to research them on the Net.  It didn't take me long to find many testimonials from folks who have been ripped off by these people, so obviously I didn't call her back.  Instead, she called ME back in 5 minutes.  I told her I wasn't interested and to put me on her DNC list.  BTW, I have been on the national DNC list for years!  How did these people circumvent that??

Disturbingly, they also had my home address.  At least they didn't know my son's name as has been the case in previous posts here.

BEWARE THE UNIVERSITY PREP CENTER.

Just received a call from this number.  I am very upset that the caller did not identify herself and knew my son's age and name.  When I asked who she was she said that she was just getting to that and when I questioned how she got the information she hung up on me.  They pretend that your child or school asked them to call.

After receiving as many as four calls from this number within an hour's time, I finally picked up. As many posters have stated, the caller was from University Prep Center and said that my son (called him by name) had expressed interest in this test preparation CD. I was surprised by that and said that he had not mentioned anything about this. Caller persisted and mentioned guarantee of increase of 4 points on ACT and several hundred points on SAT. When I said that I needed to talk with son and spouse about this, caller sounded surprised that I would delay, implying that I would be putting my son's good test scores at risk if I did not buy this product. When I asked caller to call back again after I spoke with my son, she said a quick "Good Luck" and hung up. I am glad that I checked this number out. If they call again, I will notify police.

9/26/2008 4:39 pm I recieved a call from this number 888-260-1222.  A woman's voice with no accent (American I think) and she claimed to be from "University Prep Center" and offering a special discount on a SAT PREP course for my daugher (by first name... the lady knew my daughter's first name). It was $185 and they would guarantee 200 points on the SAT and she said 2100 points or more is a "full ride" (scholarship), blah blah blah. Execeptionally nice person... in fact... TOO nice. Lots of small talk. Read off my zip and I verified... I have a single digit address of "7" and thought it was "3" and I corrected that.  She then gave me a long explanation of why she had that wrong... it was almost like "she doth protest too much".  No reason for the explanation but she seemed to be trying to keep me thinking that she was some official call and that she had ALL my information already.  She said I could use Visa, MasterCard, Amex, etc and I told her that I wouldn't order anything until I could check with my wife and see if she had some kind of SAT PREP already or one on the way.  This is when the call became ridiculous. She insisted I go ahead and charge it anyway to get the "one time discount" and I repeated myself and said, "Why would I order something I may already have and then have to send the duplicate back."  She said that she is sure we don't have their product cause she wouldn't be calling if we did.  I said that we might not have YOUR company's product but we may have another here or on the way and I would have to check.  I asked her for a phone number and contact info to call back and she refused saying that I would have to do it now to get the discount.  I said that I didn't really care about the discount and didn't mind ordering it at what ever the regular price was and that seemed to stump her.  Then I told her I knew she was a scam artist... and goodbye and hung up.... then did an Internet search for the 888 number and wala!

Woman called at 12:24 pm MST.  Asked to speak to parents of (and gave our son's name). I acknowledged I was a parent of that child & she then said that our son showed an interest in PSAT test taking, when I questioned her further (we home school, so we KNOW he didn't sign anything).  She said " I will take you off our calling list & hung up.  When I tryed to call 1-888-260-1222, I received a recording that said "Sorry the number is not in service please check the number and try again".  9-16-08

they were calling I think to scam some one in your household about SAT's. They tell your parents you showed interest.  Well this is a 'load' becasue I homeschool our son and I KNOW for a fact he didn't request, or talk to ANYONE regarding this.  But they used his name as well.  As soon as I asked a question, they hung up on me as well.
