I've recieved many calls from this number from a person named Jennifer Phillips. She states that I owe a debt to a cash advance place and yes I do but I had set up payment arrangements with that company. She then told me that it had been transferred to them so I went ahead and set up the same arrangement with them. I put money on a prepaid card and the money sat there for over 30 days. They are threatening to file Check fraud against me and put me in jail. I've since tried to set up a satisfactory information because the prepaid card has said that there is no records of the card trying to be charged. She states they've tried to charge it several times. After the money sat there 30 days or so I kept trying to call her and could get ahold of her so I left messages. She denies this now it's back to the same thing almost 2 months last and now the calls are getting more abusive. Any suggestions? We get calls from this so called 800 service and they do not identify themselves, and do not leave messages.  If I ask who they are they hang up.  Can I sue these people or get them to stop calling.

I traced this one back.  ATL is the telco that provides the phone service for the 888-296-6515.  The lady there was helpful and passed along the following info on the 888-296-6515:

I found out through some research that this is a company called ATL communications. They have another number 800-398-5777 that has an answering machine, I suggest flooding this guy with phone calls and complaints.

This number called asking for my dad. When I told him he wasnt here, the guy asked if I was over 18. When I answered he sais this was a call from the Maryland Sheriff. and hung up.

They called about every 20 min yesterday and just waited till I answered and then hung up.If I let the machine get it they do not leave a message. I talked to my phone provider and said I am at mercy of these dicks and only way to make them stop is to get a lawyer- luckily I do have a cousin lawyer> I am from South Dakota

these people called me and asked for my dad when i said no im baby sitting and i asked who this was he said a maryland sherif.and wouldnt you think if they said a ''maryland sherif'' they would have called from a maryland number/police station

I've gotten several calls from them, and they don't leave messages.  However, I answered this last time and they said they're from the Maryland Sheriffs Association.  Wanted me to commit to donating to them, but wouldn't give details on where the money went (just danced around my questions).  I don't trust anyone who won't give a breakdown of how my money will be spent.

If these people are really collecting for the Maryland Sheriff's Associaton, which, by the way, has an official website, shouldn't we contact THEM and complain to them about these terrorists?  If they lose the contract to collect donations, they'd lose money.  Hit 'em where it hurts, in the wallet!!

I called the REAL Maryland police and they said that its a scammer and that as long as they dont threaten your or keep on calling you its not illegal or there is nothing you can do. However, when they do call you are supposed to say "I filed a police report" or like that

Guy asked for "Miss Lady'. When asked who he was, he replied that he thinks he has the wrong number. Hmmmm?

Turn 'em in to the donotcall.gov registry...it's fun! Even if it doesn't do anything at least we feel we're trying to stop the madness. Thank you ATL for confirming who owns this number!!!

They call often and hangup if either I or my answering machine pick up.  No caller ID but *69 got me
the number.   Months ago they actually picked up the call and (on several occasions) I asked them to take
me off their list. No luck I think they check the DoNotCall list (I'm  on it) AFTER you answer!

i too received a call from this number. no one spoke when i aswered and when i called the number back it rang and no one answered  so i have the advance call intercept service from my phone company and i logged into my account, added the number and blocked the jerks.

Got a call from this number.  When I answered, all I heard was heavy breathing.  Called the number back, got a busy signal.

Thanks Frank! I called this number and left a message that I got a call from 1-888-296-6515. I let them know that I was on the Do Not Call list. I'll post again if I get any more calls.

I wondered why so may 800 number complaints included "...and no one was there when I answered." or "...and the person hung up." So I Googled it and this is what I found:

They are using automation [automatic dialers without humans] to find out what phone numbers are valid numbers. If someone answers, they know you have a working number and they can then turn that over to telemarketing firms for better efficiency so that when they do call you that they're likely to get you.

I just never answer numbers I don't recognize.

I am an 84 year old woman who has been bothered by calls from this number for a long time.  They come at day or night and now when I see "unavailable " followed by this number I do not answer.  It is not always easy for me to get to the phone and I am very frustrated.  Why do we have the do not call number?

Have no idea who this is, with caller ID, we don't have to pick up. The name shows as UNAVAILABLE in all caps

Maryland Sheriff's Assn.  I told him not to call her because they were a scam company.  He tried to argue with me so I just told him I'm reporting them to the "do not call" website.  He kept talking so I told him to shut up as I was hanging up.

very annoying especially when you are waiting for an important call.  Should not be allowed to happen.  Had gotten them a while back, but they stopped and now they are more than ever.

When I answered and said 'Hello' - the response was ' Hello - David ? '
I then said 'No' and asked who was calling - the caller then hung up.

I just received a call from this number, (I'm in Maryland) on the other end was a female soliciting a donation for a "Sheriffs Association" and I just want to let everyone know that this is without any doubt a scam. Sheriffs DO NOT solicite funds for retirements or anything else for that matter.
