I would be more inclined to believe this wasn't a scam if I had ever been to the hospital outside of Navy Medical facilities.

I disagree because I did owe an ER bill that is 12 days past due and literally just got off the phone with Lehigh Valley Health Network and they said my past due was not sent to collections and the reference # that was given to me from this phony company does not match the one on our hospital bill.  In or to get sent to collections you need to be really late in your payments.

This is a legit number. I am very confident that they are a billing service, not a debt collector, that contracts out to multiple health care providers. I do know that my health provider uses them. They probably insist on a number from you because they want to keep their clients confidential.

That said, they have made a mistake for me. In sept 2011 they sent me a bill for a service over a year prior, and when I mailed the payment form in, they returned it back with a hand-written note saying that it had already been paid. Now recently I received the same bill again. *rollseyes*

Although they have a funky amatuerish voice system, they are a legit collection service for the billing office of local hospital (Philadelphia PA).  The reference # they left on the message matches up to the one on the bill from the hospital.

I have gotten several calls from this number.  Some resulted in a message from them.  They wanted information regarding my son's hospital visit when we needed to go to the ER.  They claimed that if the accident was the fault of another person, we could have the hospital bill their insurance instead of ours.  But this company has no relation to my insurance company so why would they care?  I finally called them back and left them a message telling them that the fault of the accident was no one's fault but did happen in our house on my time on my property so it is the responsibility of my insurance.  I thanked them for the concern and did not receive calls from them for a month or so until 2 days ago.  THEY ARE CALLING AGAIN!!!  This time when I answer, they tell me to hold on the line while they "connect me" after waiting 10 minutes I finally hung up.  I do not settle well with receiving a phone call and then being put on hold as though I made the call in the first place.  After this happening a couple of times, I have called them again and left another message threatening legal action if they call me again.  I agree with whoever said we should band together, find out who these people are and get them dissolved... or sued.  I down for the latter.

And with a name like "The Business Office"-- I don't think it gets any shadier than that!  AND THEY ARE NOT A COLLECTION AGENCY.  I OWE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ON THAT E.R. VISIT AND STILL THEY CONTINUE TO CALL ME.

Got a call from this number; left a garbled message.  couldn't make out what it said.  But looking back at these calls from this number, I see some calls were from 2008.  What's with these people.  If it is indeed a bill collector for a hospital, I don't have any hospital bills.  I don't have ANY outstanding bills.  So why is the bill collectors calling me.  My name is listed in the phone book by my last name and fist name is my initial.  I figured since it's a very common last name, I get calls for all the people who have the same first initial and last name.  I got after one when I told her I know how she gets this number, and she hung up on  me.  Haven't heard from her again.  I keep a log of all these calls.  In case there is a class action suit.  LOL  So, for the phone book, I changed my last name.  But looking on the internet, I can still find me on some websites with the old name.

Third party debt collectors have no legal standing to collect money. You contracted the service with the hospital you were treated from. When you did not pay the bill the hospital sold the debt to a third party. You have no contract with them. They only purchased your debt. Tell them you will consider their offer and hang up or offer them a dollar a week. If they decline, then they have refused your offer to pay so you owe nothing.

I think it's a scam.. Why would these "professional bill collectors" hang up on their clients?  They must explain what we supposedly owe.  There's no way that they could be sued or breaking any laws for stating a company name. How ridiculous?! They won't state a company name to remain under the radar!!  All we have is a phone number to track them down.  Don't be stupid, people.  Just because some random nameless company demands you owe money, doesn't seem correct to me.  They obviously should have to provide verification just like any other business/professional.  If they can't and you refuse to fall for the antics, you'l surely get off the list! YAY!

I love a good scam as much as the next person, OK probably much more, but this number, as of May of 2010 at least, is the number for a legitimate subcontracted billing department with clients such as Life Counseling Services (LCS) and Rehab After Work (RAW) among others.

Perhaps some of you forgot getting treated for the addiction to conspiracy.

I will admit that I myself trust no one until I've backtracked them to their home addresses and then I look at the credit history to see if they are for real.  I have gotten almost all of the responses those of you above have gotten when this number is used to test social engineering tactics (HIPPAA regulated offices are the best places to practice for federal penetrations) but they are legit.

"Courtesy from both sides" above is totally correct and if any of you really care, though I can't imagine why. I could give up the business name and address but it is a very normal outsourced accounting office that if they gave you the name of any shyster lawyer could make a case for HIPPAA violation based on the fact that they only handle medical billing.

I've gotten multiple calls from this number and I don't have any bills outstanding for any hospitals. When I call the number I got a person, and I was asked for the reference number. I asked for the name of the company, she wouldn't give it but asked again for the reference number. I told her I wasn't giving her any information until she gave me information, and asked what the name of the company was. She said "we're a medical billing company" I said "that's a purpose, not a company name. I need the company name" at which point she got upset and hung up on me.

Long story short, there's no way any company that can't give you its name is legit. This is a scam.

OK, first off, there are billing departments that work for the hospital and they tend to work multiple hospitals because as you know, corporations don't like to just own one thing. So they can't necessarily say where they are from without some information from you. Be kind and give it to them to help speed up the process.

Secondly, some hospitals do use outside billing agencies to conduct their business because they are not staffed to handle this themselves. It's the same process as above. They work multiple hospitals. Just give them the reference # to speed up the process.

Also since these calls are regarding hospitals and a visit to a hospital, that you may or may not have had, there are HIPAA Laws that protect you. So if it seems that they are being vague, it's because they have to be until they are sure you are the right person. Again as listed above, just give them the information requested to speed up the process.

No one wants to get sued for millions of dollars because they violated not only a Federal HIPAA law, but a Federal Bill collecting law (FDCPA).

this is a legitimate attempt to collect a debt.  it's not a scam.  they are calling me too and although they are annoying, the reality is, we all owe someone money and this 'pre-debt agency' is simply attempting to collect money owed to some medical facility we visited.

if you've gone to a hospital lately or an ER, then this is a bill you really do owe.  the company is a collection division for many hospitals.  it's not a scam; it's money that you owe from going to a doctor or a hospital or ER, etc...

I have received a few calls from this number, the 3rd call they finally left a message, recorded message with a reference number as listed in these other posts.  I have not called back the number.  Reading other posts, people state that it is from a hospital.  I do have a pending payment for a hospital bill from a few months ago, but I don't think it has been long enough for it to go to a collections agency, but maybe, who knows.  I'll take it up with the hospital directly, not over some vague 800 number company.

They claim they are not a collection agency but are a pre debt agency. Not sure what that means. They also claim that because of the Hippo laws they can not disclose any information. Clearly its some kind of scam. We should try and get the name of the company and blast them through the blogishere.

They just called us and we got their generic automated answering system saying it was from "The Business Office", and it "was not a sales call".  So I called them back, and it was a call center in India calling about a so-called hospital bill.  We don't have any outstanding bills, especially with a hospital.

Got the same message as everyone else repeated twice, so I called go their VM (I called after 7pm CST) it said self pay then went into a VM mode. I hung up. The first possibility is it is a bill collector trying to get you to pay a bill. By leaving a message they do data mining by getting your personal info then adding it it's database. Another possibility it's some a***ole doing prep-work for some scam involving telephones and he or she or they is working off a list (Old or New) and trying to gather info so they can try and use it to royally screw up your credit.

Checked the Phone # on google and got a number of sites like this with similar comments. Ran the address on google maps and could not get a response. Address is for La Palma Hospital. Dialed in on google maps to 222 South 4th Street in Reading PA, (Address for Hospital related to Phone #) and found an inner city urban setting with multiple family dwellings. Not a hospital in sight. Definitely a scam. From my reading, I guess, there will be multiple calls until they get tired and move on. DO NOT BELIEVE IT IS A BILL COLLECTOR! They are collecting something, for sure. I'm guessing it is a telephone phishing scam.

i called them back and gave them the reference number.  it is a bill collector with various different hospitals. they had the wrong number so if you're tired of them calling just call them and give them the reference # and tell them they have the wrong person so they'll take your number off their list.  also they sound pretty legit because i asked for a suporvisor right off the bat and they are all american as apposed to and india call center.

I received the same cryptic message as the posts above.  I have to admit, I was a bit curious so I decided to give them a call.  I was told that I had contacted the "Business office".  I asked them exactly what business their office was for.  After a little questioning they replied that it was the business office for "The Hospital".  As i refused to give the reference number, they would not tell me anything more.

I then asked to speak to the scumbag's boss.  When she picked up she asked for the reference number again, and hung up on me when I would not give it.  I do not know how these people got my number or what they want, but I would like to see if there is any legal action I can take against them.

If I get anywhere with this, however unlikely, I will post an update.

I got this call twice-- once it left a message but, like the poster above, the recording started over my voicemail message and all that came through was a reference number. The second time I answered the call and it was a recorded voice telling me to call back and refer to a long reference number. Tried calling and a recording says "you have reached the business office, please stay on the line..." How vague is that? I hung up.
