But i know what i owe. And there would be no need for phone calls or law suits..and they never mention my name. Which they probably dont know. The number they called from is 8664038221. Consumers across the country report that they're getting telephone calls from people trying to collect on loans the consumers never received or on loans they did receive but for amounts they do not owe. Others are receiving calls from people seeking to recover on loans consumers received but where the creditors never authorized the callers to collect for them. So what's the story?

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>

I received a phone call form the lead investigator from this firm and said I was named as one of the possible defendants. He said my father had me as a cosigner on the loan. When I questioned how could someone co-sign without me being present, he  said that it was done online. Then said that I could pay 10% of the debt since by law, I was responsible. He then went on to ask me about another case involving my father. It upset me very much and had me afraid I was going to jail so I paid the money. I am putting a stop payment on it first thing in the morning.

I got the same call about discussing pg 15 of the packet sent to my job a few days ago (which ofcourse I never received)  they've called numerous times on my cell phone and because I dont answer began calling my place of employment, harrassing and being rude to the receptionist answering our phones because she told them I was on vacation and out of the office.  I called back today to ask them to stop calling since I have not had any type of accounts or credit cards in over 10 years.  I called from a restricted number and the guy answering their phones was rude and stated I would no longer get any calls because they had turned my account over for trial since I refused to take thier calls by answering and hanging up.  I asked him how he even knew who I was since I hasn't provided any information and he said it was caller id, by my phone number.  When I told him that was impossible since I was calling from a restricted line he proceeded to repeat my phone number back to me.  He refused to give me any information about my supposed account with them and hung up on me 3 times when I insisted on account info amd for them to quit harassing me.  He said he wasn't hanging up on me but rather "terminating" the call.  I dint know how or where they get all this info or right into my personal information but I how something is done about it in the near future!!  In the meantime I hope the harassing calls truly do cease.  Ridiculous.

I just got a call from these people an Allen Goodman from Lewis & McCarthy and they need to go over pg 15 of the packet that was sent to my work or home. They also said it was to discuss my hearing and he also said he would be in hearings today, but I still needed to call back right away. I thought it was strange because I am actually going through court things from a family estate, and they never call you like that, so that made me think I better look this up, but the number they used with me is different it was 877-832-6316.

They are definitely a scam.  They get peoples' info illegally and call and say they owe money and threaten them with jail time, etc. if they do not pay.  They always act like it's really time sensitive and you have to pay RIGHT THEN or go to jail but if you don't, they just call every day, mulitiple times a day for months and nothing happens.  You never recieve any paperwork, no one comes to your house or job....you just get annoying phone calls.  I just don't answer them anymore.  I know it's not real because they say I owe money for a pay day loan and I've never gotten one...I don't even have a bank account or anything.  They also claimed to send paperwork to my "job" and I don't work...I live with my dad.  They are so dumb.  They're just trying to screw people out of money.

I received a call from 1-888-308-1878, they said they were with Lewis and McCarthy Law Firm and that I owe this company some money and I am wondering if this is legit or not because I know they cannot come to your house and summon you without going through your District Attorney's office or sheriff office.

like beware said do not give out info. first you ask them to send you what ever information they have on this debit all sign documents and if they can not provide you than DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY INFO ON YOU. First if this is a collections agency and must of the time they buy files from companies that have written off your account and the company do not give them any back up to other than your name and ss#. PLEASE BE AWARE THEY ALSO HAVE SOME ONE CALLING YOU SAYING THE ARE FROM THE COUNTY CLERK OFFICE AND THEY HAVE A SUMMONS AND BEFORE THEY COME OUT THEY WANT TO GIVE YOU A CHANCE TO CLEAR THIS. ANY PROCESSES SERVIER DOES NOT CALL YOU AND LET YOU KNOW THEY ARE GOING TO COME OUT TO SERVICE YOU THEY JUST COME OUT AND SUPRISE YOU. BY LAW AND IF THEY ARE A LAW FIRM LIKE THEY SAY THEY ARE THEY SHOULD KNOW THE LAW THAT WANT YOU ASK FOR PROOF THEY NEED TO PROVIDE YOU WITH IT.
