I have had several voice mail messages from a toll free number about a past due bill.  I called the number back after ignoring it the first several times and they say oh you need to talk to Mrs. So and So.  But of course she isn't in at the moment.  So I ask what is this about?  They are trying to find my neighbor for a bad debt!  I told them my neighbors debt is none of my business and they assure me they will take me off of their call list.  Next day, another message.  This time they were not so fortunate to have me return their call, but my husband did.  He told them ever so nicely, of course, that they better take us off of their list of contacts for this person.  Funny, no more calls have come in but now this phony Sorry We Missed You note and a call that says they will try again later.  I called the number, you can't even leave a message.  PS We live in West Sac and there have been some strange guys going through the neighborhood trying to convice you to let them in so they can talk to you about your alarm system upgrade.  We called our alarm company and they have not sent anyone out to do such a thing,  They said they don't do things like that.  I wonder if these two scams are related?  Checking to see who is gone during the day.Caller: Unknown

Hey, Fair Oaks Resident! I'm a consumer producer looking into this at CBS13.  I would love to talk to you about your experience. We are likely going to do a "Call Kurtis" story on this. We've already talked with the BBB, who is not happy that their logo is being used in this way.  Please email me at bbaar@kovr.com.  Thanks!

Also in Roseville.  I had the exact same experience.  I gave him no information after asking why Weatherite has a gift for me.  Says it's promotional and what is the route code.  I said no thanks and hung up.

Weird!  I never heard anyone come to the door, just saw it there when I went outside a little while ago.

Got what I thought was from UPS, except there wasn't any UPS logo, No Name, and for some odd reason the impressive BBB Symbol to the left of the fake barcode. Marked on the top with a Sharpie was [WE ATTEMPTED TO: Deliver a Neighborhood Gift Package], but from my years of using a Sharpie, the tend to bleed to the other side of the paper, so it was all done as a print out in massive quantities.  This had scam written all over it.  If you decided to call the number provided *67 your mobile phone, or just call from a pay phone, or work phone so they can't trace the call back to you, and don't provide the Route Code # that was hand written. Just try to reach a live person, and get enough information so you can hand it over to the real BBB.  Trust your gut! If they truely were legit, they would be proud to state the company that is graciously handing out Neighborhood Gift Packages. Watch out, be your own advocate.Caller: Sticky Note on my Front Door

(Sacramento Area) We returned from vacation and received a door tag that had no business logo or business name of where it was from.  All it said was "Sorry we missed you" and "we attempted to deliver a neighborhood gift package".  The door tag is about 4" x 6" with the header highlighted in yellow and black.  No date written, none of the boxes are checked or circled whether it was a 1st attempt, final attempt or when they would try again.  In the center of the body it has three lines showing to Schedule a pick-up, call to arrange delivery, 1-888-314-8970 but nothing checked to left.  There is a route # entered at the bottom hand written in 2 letters followed by 4 digits...but that's it.

At first, I questioned who would put a door tag w/o a business name or logo on it...didn't seem legit to me but I was curious and called the number.  Immediately a recording came on and said "please hold while we transfer your call to the next available operator, this call may be monitored..." Then it just rang continuously, no one picked up and no answering machine.  The fact that the recording didn't state the business name made me realize even more this definitely is not legit.

So, I decided to see if I could find them in the yellow pages...nothing there.  Then I googled the door tag and found this website...which showed the exact toll free # that is listed on this door tag.  If I could be of any help w/anyone else out there having these issues, I hope this does help.

This obviously is a scam.  Don't call the number and if you do don't give any of your personal information out.  A delivery company shouldn't be asking that of you anyways... that's what the confirmation # is for.  If it is a legitimate company like Fed Ex or UPS the data pulls up and they can confirm to you you're personal info, etc...but should have no reason to ask for your credit card, checking account, and any other personal information that has nothing to do with re-routing the package.

Telemarketer
Just had a lengthy phone call with a person at 888-314-8970 after finding the strangely UPS looking "Sorry We Missed You" note on my door step.  He wouldn't tell me the company name at first, so I had to ask him and he said "Weatherite".  I then had to ask him several times what his company sells, and he explained that they sell and install windows, siding, gutters, doors, etc.

I asked him why they wouldn't put their business name on their delivery note, and he said the manager of the company is from the midwest and has a different way of thinking... huh?  I told him if he Google's the number (888-314-8970) he will see what people think of his business practice and that most people assume it's a scam.  He again said his manager believes this is the best method of marketing, but then said a number of people have addressed the same concern that the business name is not on the "Missed Delivery" ticket.  Oh, and then he explained in GREAT detail how many companies are satisfied, how well known "Weatherite" is, and how they are on the "Armstrong and Getty" radio news show in Sacramento and you can check with the Better Business Bureau.

Finally I get to the bottom of "what the gift package" is and IF you accept a free estimate for some sort of weatherizing update to your home, you apparently get a $25 VISA gift card.  I told him "No thanks".  He did ask for my "Route Code" which is on my "Missed Delivery" ticket, and I never gave it or any other information to him.  Also, I didn't call from MY phone number - I used GMail's free phone call tool to call out through my computer so they wouldn't have a valid number to return the call.

Weatherite is located at 4813 Auburn Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95841 and their local number is (916) 332-1009.  Website: http://www.weatheritewindows.com

Mystery solved.  Now you have all the info.  Google is our friend.  ;)

Iknowkea, we too are in West Sacramento and received the notice today as well, It had scam/be aware written all over it. We have dogs as well and our dog barked earlier this evening,  but by the time we went to the door no one was there but the notice was. I guess the BBB logo was supposed to mean something.  NOT!!! and our notice date says 8/9, hello, 8/9 has not yet arrived.

Roseville (7/20/11):  I got this same notice.  Has colors that UPS uses, but they added a hand-written "route code" number on it below the pre-printed "888-314-8970" phone number.  There was a bar code to make it look official.  And, I am not sure if the Better Business Bureau (BBB) knows this, but their trademarked (TM) logo is in bold print in the bottom left corner, as if it is suppose to add to the importance of this notice.  I was home and saw someone at the door and quickly got up to see who it was, but within 3 seconds, the person was gone, and I called-out "hello" several times.  No one on the sidewalks or at neighbors doors, so I think he was hiding around the corner of my house by my back gate, which really had my ire up and I was not going to go look any more only to fall prey to a burglar.  This give credence to the other posts that this person was trying to find-out who was home and who was not.  I did NOT call the telephone number, but chose to search the internet and it led me to all these posts.  I will report this to the "BBB," too.
