The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

A guy name Richard Scott call my job tell my boss that this is a investigation and if I don't call by six that day a warrant was going to be put out for me. I gave them a call the were loud and talking very fast and telling me that I scam some type of payday loan company and in the state of Michigan that a felony and I can do up to 12 mo in jail also tried to make me pay them 1400 dollar and they wanted my bank info I told them I was a work and give me until around 3:30pm to call them bk. I call my attorney and as soon as I told home the story he said Joanna u have nothing to worried about that is a scam. Also called police station a spoke to a investigated officer and he told me that people call in all the time asking about the phone call they got he also said its a scam they are trying to make u pay them money. I was very scared and upset. Because for one its is embarrassing for them to call me Job saying all those thing like I was really in trouble it's not right it should be unlawful.

I recieved a call from these people today.  They not only threatened my father, they also gave him a false case number and advised him that I owe money.  This is a direct violation of FDCPA as well as HIPPA.  They reached the wrong person today because I do this everyday and I will turn them in as well as sue them.  Did you know that an individual debt collector can be sued for up to $1000 for violating the FDCPA rules.  As well as the company can be sued.  Please spread the word because this is not ok and someone has to stand up to these people.  They have met their someone.

How do we stop this. Do they think that we are so stupid that we are going to give them money simply based on them say stupid things like "WE ARE COMING TO GET YOU".  Plus they called me and told me all about why they were trying to reach my daughter - felony - arrest warrant - hot checks writter, plus about three other things. Against the law to discuss these type with anyone other than the person who is in violation.  I hope that no one ever falls for this harassment. You know debit collectors should be sued for everything they have plus more for causing the elderly stress and family members undue worry for something that is none of their business.  The truth is if they were a really debit collector abiding by all the rules, no one would ever be talked to in this manner.

They called my family today stating a false "case number" and saying I needed to get in touch with them today.  I called and they wanted the phone number they called originally.  I asked them who they were and the guy threw a fit cause I would not give him more information.  I mentioned that I was going to turn them in to the attorney generals office and thats when the s^&$ hit the fan.  He blew up so I hung up on him.  Tis the season for scamers.  Turn them into the attorney generals office.  Thats their job.

Right but wrong info. It's a scam, they are scaring people trying to get money. They close up shop, move, and start using new phone numbers. Thy are trying to get you to give them more info, so they can act like you or someone you know owes money. I have turned these scammers in. Beware: do not send them money you will never get it back. They move to fast for the law to catch them.

I had the same exact person call me at work.  Unfortunetly for him it was my day off and my coworker took the message and said he was pretty rude.  I, however, never returned his phone call mainly because I have no reason to be "Investigated" and if I was, they would have already showen up at my house or work.

Received two phone calls yesterday, one at work and one on my cell.  Received another two today at work and cell.  They had stopped once I filed complaints with the attorney general in the states of the old numbers they were calling from.  I also listed my cell on the do not call registry for certain 800 numbers.

So Investigator McMillian just called my job when I told him I was helping a customer and I asked for his number to call him back...he hesitated.  After he gave me the number I asked if I called the local police station would they be able to provide me with information about him and the "so-called" case.  He shouted NO THEY WOULDN'T!!! Then he said "I see where this is going" and started threatening me.  I hung up, he called right back and asked for the corporate office phoen number.  My associate put him on hold for about 10 minutes.  He finally hung up.. Then 15 minutes later the phone was ringing again...he told another associate that he had already contact the corporate office.

This is my point...since when do the police call you to tell you they are coming to arrest you. Also, why are they contacting the corporate office if they have a warrant for my arrest.  And why in Gods name are they using a toll free number if he is working with the local authorities.  And Lastly, the police can get your updated address from DMV...why are you calling to verify my address (where I haven't lived in 6 years)

Received a phone call from a woman claiming to be a process server stating she had a court summons to serve on me for felony charges.

She told me to call a company by the name of "Huntington" at 1-888-323-4465 and told me that if I didn't call today that she would serve me at the address she had listed for me and I would be arrested for felony charges and indicted.

This is a scare tactic that debt collectors use to scare you, and it is unlawful.

This number called with a crazy lady yelling in my voicemail. Finally a different guy call with the name of Paul Berngstein. He said there was a claim against me and this was my only notice before he was going to come get me at my residence. So I called the number back to complain bc I have nothing against me and the guy who answered even said that it was illegal for someone to say they could "come get me". So it's a scam. I have never received anything in the mail. They had my social and address but still haven't received anything in the mail. Only annoying voicemails. And they leave messages for my husband too.
