I also got the automated call from 888-338-3588.
My CIBC VISA card is a back-up credit card... only used when my M/C is declined for some reason.
The only time I've used this card in the last year is at Walmart Canada on-line, in early December 2013.
Does that mean that Walmart Canada has had their systems hacked?

I've just called CIBC to confirm this number and as it stands now this is a FRAUD.  CIBC is aware of it and is taking some steps to prevent it. So if you ever receive a phone call from that number just ignore it.

Just got an automated call, as described by others above. I checked CIBC's contact numbers, and this is NOT one of them. So I googled the number, and this page is its first hit, NOT any website associated with CIBC. So I agree that this a scam.

Just received a call from this number.  The message was left on voicemail, and when I called back they asked for my credit card number with no security questions, and no verification of who I was first.  That was what triggered me that something was amiss.

The woman said she was calling from CIBC in Montreal (she had a French accent) and was quite patient in waiting while I double checked the number she was calling from.  Very cool and collected.  When I told her the number was a scam & I would be calling the RCMP she hung up.

BE AWARE.  No bank or credit card company will call and ask for your banking information - they already HAVE it.  As well, no bank or cc company will discuss ANYTHING without first verifying who you are.  These scammers are very slick - if you get a call from them, please report them to the RCMP and your bank.

It IS a CIBC number.  I just spoke with their credit card department (called the number listed on their website), and confirmed that it was CIBC who left me a VM.

I received the same message as the OP did on my voice mail while i was out. I happened to need to do some phone banking and I asked the rep if anyone had called me from VISA and I was told no. I gave them the number and they could not find it listed in any VISA or CIBC phone directory. Someone has hacked a merchant's CC registry and is using the partial credit card information to contact cardholders. DO NOT CALL THIS NUMBER. REPORT IT TO CIBC IMMEDIATELY. I worry that others have been caught up in this and stand to lose a great deal =(

It is indeed CIBC, they will offer that you reach them at another known number if you prefer.

Got a phone message from CIBC asking me to call back at 888-338-3588. When I returned their call, it
was to remind me that I hadn't verified my new VISA card.

I got a phone message from 1 888-338-3588 saying it was CIBC and to please return their call. When I called back, they reminded me that a US Dollar VISA I had ordered in Dec. had not been verified. Which was true.

I got the same message from number 1(888)3383588, but I called back.  Fortunately I didn't give them any bank information, however I did give them some personal information like my date of birth and home address, because they said they had called about a bank statement being returned and if I had moved recently (which I had).  It sounded legit... I don't know what I should do.  Please advise?

Same here with a computer generated female voice providing 1 888 338-3588 to call back.  Sounds like a scam so did not call them back.

Same thing with me, Sounds exactly like the bank.  CIBC verified it was not one of their outbound numbers.  When i called the number and told the lady it was a scam she put me on hold for the fraud department.

THIS IS A SCAM.

You are right not to call them back.  It's fraud.  I got the same message but I verified with CIBC first (calling the number at the back of my card) to see if the number was a CIBC number and it's not.

I called anyway to find what they wanted but did not give them any information other than my name and phone number.
ey did not have anything on file for me that was urgent.

They answer  with the same automated CIBC message where you can key in your credit card number.  It looks real.  I did not key in my credit card number and was transferred to a customer service representative.

They asked my name and my phone number and if I had credit cards with CIBC and when I said yes she wanted to know the credit card number which I di not give and if it was mastercard or visa.  Then she wanted to verify my account and ask for my mother's maiden name.  When I told her that I was not ready to give her more information than my name and my phone number, the line when dead.

This is fraud.  Do not give them any information.

Thank you for describing your experience with 888-338-3588 in detail. You were wise to not give away any info.
888-338-3588 is not listed as a CIBC contact number  https://www.cibc.com/ca/inside-cibc/dept-contacts.html
1.  SCAMMERS post LIES on 800notes to convince potential victims that this is a legit number (and it is NOT).
2.  CallerID is *NOT* a trusted source for legit CIBC phone numbers  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caller_ID_spoofing
3.  If 888-338-3588 calls you, DON'T answer or give away any info.
4.  NEVER call 888-338-3588 back or ANY bank number supplied by a stranger.
5.  If you need to call CIBC, use a number from a TRUSTED SOURCE (back of card, bank statement, website, phone book)

They called and left a message saying it was CIBC regarding an urgent matter.

I called the number at the back of my credit card and they told me that this number was not part of CIBC and that they did not have anything on file for me that was urgent.

I called the number 1-888-338-3588 to see what it was with no intention of giving them information.

I told her that she must know since she was CIBC.  Then she wanted to verify my account and ask for my maiden name.  When I told her that I was not ready to give her more information than my name and my phone number, the line when dead.

This is fraud.  Do not give them any information.
