I got a VM from westlake financial services. It was advising me that "x" person was applying for credit and wanted me to confirm if I knew them. Said person has used me as a reference before so I'm sure it's just collectors trying to find her. I'm guessing if uve ever let anyone use you as a reference and they are behind, they're now calling u to find them. I always just say I don't talk to her anymore

Got a call for a credit reference for someone I know as a crook. Tried to call them back but I only got the same prerecorded message I heard the first time they called.

Debt Collector
I got targeted by them (I have no idea where they got this number, it is unlisted and I have never heard of any of the names they mention). This smells like a complete scam and/or expired-debt extortionists (constant harassment, fake names, fake reasons, the made-up "reference number" that you "may" need. A real bank wanting some kind of reference would have a real name and verifiable street address and legitimate numbers for you to call back and would only call you once or twice)

DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION. If you accidentally pick up the phone and it's not one of your friends, just hang up again.

Here is the prerecorded message they used repeatedly. The words inside parentheses were recorded in a DIFFERENT voice and INSERTED into the FIRST RECORDED VOICE in order to make massive numbers of robo-calls. I wouldn't be surprised if it's just some guy sitting in his basement with a couple of sound samples and an old 386 pc and a robodialer:

"Hello, this is Westlake Financial Services calling for (stupid-name-1. Stupid-name-2) has listed you as a credit reference on a loan application. If you are (stupid-name-1) and are willing to be a reference for (stupid-name-2), please call us back at (888-341-2903) at any time. Write down the following reference number, you may be asked for it when you call: (fake reference number). Our phone number is (888-341-2903) and you can call us at any time. Thank you. Goodbye."

Also, you should know that any number that begins with 800 or 888 (and I believe that there are others, as well) automatically gets the phone number of any phone who calls them, even if you call blocked.

If you have an Android phone, there are a number of apps out there to block calls. Some of them can actually screen before you get the first call because they use a database of numbers reported by app users and can be configured to automatically block numbers that have been widely reported as scams, so they don't get through even the first time. Mr Number used to do this but I think after they built up their database they started requiring a monthly fee for the info (you can still use it to block numbers on your own, though). None of the number blockers are perfect, but they are a great defense against all the lazy-@$$ scammers trying to get at your money. Just do an app search on "phone number blocker" and check the reviews to see which one you want to try.

Scam...
Recieved two call in  two day from a recorded message as follows: "Westlake financial services calling about a credit reference for "John Doe"....if this is "John Doe" please say Yes otherwise say No" ... the person machine was trying to reach was close to my name, such as "John Dow" I replied "No" both times and hung up. Then tried to call back and got the same message.

Today I called Westlake Finanical Services out of LA at 888-739-9192 and spoke with Hazel Ex. 6622 she stated they had no knowledge of this number nor are they in anyway associated with 888-341-2903.

I then called my cell phone carrier and had them block the 888-341-2903 number. I fully suspect this is some type of scam, to get our personal information. Don't give them anything.... I am going to report this once I recieve documents in mail from my phone company.

I missed the call from this number, but it left a voicemail. I think the recording started playing when the voicemail greeting started, so the beginning of the message was cut off. This is the voicemail: "018. Our phone number is (888) 341-2903 and you can call us at anytime. Thank you. Goodbye."

Same here - except I couldn't understand the name that was asking for a credit reference.  It's Wesley Financial Services, but the main number listed for them (in my area anyway) is disconnected. When I called back to see if I could get a person, I got the same recorded message and it knew that it was me calling.   Smells pretty fishy to me.
