BEWARE! The call may as well be from Bill Me Later, but it's probably to get your info or to plug more credit debt on you. I paid off and CLOSED my Bill Me Later account more than 5 years ago! I got a letter out of nowhere saying: "Recently, we detected suspicious activity on an account that was opened using your name and personal information." My account has been closed for a long while and NO NEW ACCOUNT was opened in my name, since I monitor my credit score and activity every single month.

I'm assuming that if I called, they will pretend to check out the "suspicious activities" which there will be none, and then proceed to plug more credit debt on me. UGH!

It's a really sh*tty advertising campaign.

Scratch that. It was legit, but I called up the phone on the Bill Me Later website to confirm it was legit instead of talking to the guy who called me.

Just got a call from them phishing. Not legit! Reporting them to BBB.  They wanted last 4 of my social. I said no and they said tell us your birthday. We know it is 1974?  What a total scam.

Got a call from this number. Lady said she was a Fraud Investigator for Bill Me Later. She said she was calling in reference to an attempted transaction in November 2013. She called me on 013114. She said I had an open account since 2005. I have used this company twice and paid off the purchases items. She said someone in Ft. Worth Texas had attempted to stick me with a 299.00 purchase from outdoors.com. I told her I had not made a purchase from that company and she assured me the attempted purchase was blocked. She wanted my address, email address, and last 4 digits of Social. From then she had to give me my mother's maiden name. I told her to tell me and she got it right.  I then gave her the last 4 digits of my social. She said she was reporting the incident to law enforcement and mailing me an affidavit to sign. I would later be mailed results of the investigation. She also closed the open account.

I didn't recognize this number when they called so I let it go to message. I listened to the message and called them back at this number. To find out why they called I did have to give my name and last 4 digits of my SS#. I have a fraud alert with all 3 credit reporting agencies (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion) because of an earlier breach. This is why BLM called me. They said someone had attempted to open an acct in my name at Foot Locker and because I already have the Fraud Alert on my accts they called me to verify. I had not been to Foot Locker so it was indeed someone trying to use my name and/or other info fraudulently. I'm glad they called!

This number actually is from bill me later.  I searched the number after I got a message from them that sounded like it could me a scam especially since I heard the woman say something as she was hanging up. My identity was recently stolen and I have freezes on all my accounts so I called the number on bill me later's website assuming it was a fraud call. I gave the man the phone number and he said it is their security department and an account had been fraudulently opened in my name but had been closed and that's why the 888-361-0687 number called me. He didn't push any personal information from me when I said I wasn't comfortable giving it to him.

This is a division of Bill me Later.  They will have you call the number to verify that what you purchased was legitimate.  In my case, the purchase was denied due to a change of address.

Got a call from a Kenneth, who stated he worked for 'bill me later, customer security' and that before he could provide detailed info about the reason for the call he needed to verify the last four of my SSN. I felt skeptical, but he advised if I didn't feel comfortable that I could go to billmelater.com and call the customer service number and ask to be transfered to customer security (he stated that he will notate the account as well). I hung up and called customer service which the cs agent told me that customer security is the anti-fraud department. When I got transfered I spoke with an AJ who acknowledged the note Kenneth left.

If you get a call from bill me later customer security; its not a scam, they are their to make sure youre information wasn't compromised.

Was given this as the call-back number for Bill Me Later. I never directly called back the number given. But it seems it is a legit Bill Me Later "security / fraud" number -- but their calls made me feel extremely uncomfortable. They need to improve their approach. I received 2 calls -- both quickly asking for last 4 of my SS (never gave) and the month and day of my BD after they gave me the year. And they couldn't go any further. Ends up that they were verifying my attempt to open a BIll Me Later account via PayPal. I had put a Fraud Alert with all 3 credit bureaus recently, because of credit card fraud. So they needed to verify that it was indeed me trying to open the account. During their second attempt, I asked them to provide me with a call-back number. They gave me a reference numbers and a phone number, and said I could verify it online as being theirs. I wasn't able to do that via Bill Me Later online, but read the info here. I called the main customer service number for BIll Me Later, told them what happened, and the gal said it seems the number is a legit Bill Me Later number, then connected me to the security department who pulled up my info from the reference number I had been given. My suggestion to Bill Me Later: Tell us wary folks to call the main Bill Me Later number, and ask for "such and such" department, and provide x reference number. I asked the gal on the phone to please pass my suggestion along to her supervisors. Instead, she just argued with me that it was handled correctly. If it were handled correctly, why do I still have this creepy feeling from their two calls to me? Call originally came from 1-866-528-3733

Got a phone call from this number, but I answered and hung up. After finding this site I called bill me later's phone number on their website and they did verify that it in fact belongs to their security department. Wanting to verify a recent purchase that was made after I sent an email about difficulty making an initial purchase. Obviously if it seems to not be legit never give your information to them, but don't always assume it is a scam.

Remember, if you are ever unsure of a received call purporting to be from a business, go to their website and call their main number. You can speak with customer service who can verify whether the number is legitimate. Also, if there is something they need you to verify you can still do that with much less risk.

Who are these people?  They had partial info about me and wanted me to fill in the blanks for them.  Sounded really shady, especially when I asked for an employee ID# to refer to in the future.

This number is a legitimate number.  I applied for a bill me later account and it came back as cannot be processed.  I have a fraud alert on my credit account and they called to verify that I had applied for the account and only asked for the last four of my social.  They even told me what I was attempting to purchase and the amount.  I called paypal and I called the number on the website and they both acknowledged that this number is indeed their security fraud center.

After reading all of your comments, I still wasn't sure if the number was or wasn't legit. So, I used my common sense. When is doubt, this is always the best way to go. Last night I purchased a laptop from newegg.com, so I concluded that there was a strong possibility that it was bill me later confirming I had made the purchase. Still, not knowing if it was bill me later calling from that number, I clicked on the link in the email I received from them, called the number on their site (not the # that called this morning) and I asked them if it was legit. So, stop worrying if it is or isn't. Just do what I just did and you be OK. :) Oh, by the way, It WAS legit.

This number belongs to the security department of Bill Me Later.  It is legitimate. I made a purchase the previous day with a company using the Bill Me Later service through PayPal.  I received a call a day later from this phone number to verify if I had made that purchase.  They asked for the last 4 digits of my social security number and no other information.

Got a message to call this number, but could find nothing on the BML website about it, so I called back to  the listed Bill Me Later customer support phone number(1-866-528-3733) and they confirmed that it was their security department. They transferred me over to security to confirm that I had made a purchase. I pointed out to the woman who I spoke to that they needed to have this number listed somewhere on their website as an appropriate number for the firm, to assure customers that it was not just  some scam artists claiming to be BML. She stated she would "tell her supervisor" about my response.

this is not legit.  I applied for Bill Me Later through Paypal and was denied.  Therefore, why would there be any questions regarding my account if I dont have an account.  Cannot be too careful these days so much identity theft and fraud.

This is NOT a scam.  This is bill me later.  They call on behalf of the company that the bill me later account is through.  If you purchase from newegg, the account specialist will say they are from 'NewEgg preferred accounts' for instance.  I applied for a bill me later account and got a call from them the next day asking about it.

It is legit. I called the number listed on the Bill Me Later website & I also checked the number with Paypal. It is in fact security with Bill Me Later. Someone had tried to charge a $2,000 Nordic Track to my account & it was denied. They were just following through with me. I did not give him my SS# & he did not hang up on me & like I said, I called PayPal directly to verify it. You just can't be too sure anymore.

The number IS legit.  I made a transaction on ebay using Bill Me Later/PayPal and they called  from 888-361-0687 and left a message.  I called back 888-361--0687.  They wanted to verify that it was ME that made the transaction and only asked for the last 4 digits of my SS#.  They did not ask for any other personal information.  I actually appreciate the fact that they called to verify that it was me.
