Round three..."Steven Grey' called at 8:15am and this time I answered. He launched into his same script and eventually paused to say "Are you listening to me?". I asked for his address to send money and he replied "I am not trying to put money into my very own pocket, you see", and went back to his script. At his next pause he chastised me for not only paying poor attention to him but also that I "must speak in a proper and respectable manner or you will have a bad time in your life". When I asked him for his real name and his employee number, there was a long pause and then he hissed one word: "Bi***". I hung up.

Second call from them today (first call was two days ago). I recognized the same voice. This time he said his name was Steven Grey from "the IRS Department" and that a lawsuit has been filed against me at the local courthouse. He finished with ..."please do not delay before you are arrested, and have a blessed day"! Both of these calls came while I was out, so I did not have a chance to pick up and mess with his mind in payback, as some of you have done. So I'm wondering: if these calls are not picked up, how long do they go on? Weeks? Months?

Appreciate the links. They are trying to get the elderly and those less informed about how the IRS really handles things.

Received 2 calls from this number. 1 yesterday and 1 this morning.  They speak english poorly and pretend to be the IRS. They are trying to get information from you and say that you owe back taxes. Do not fall for this scam. The IRS will never call you like this. They will send a letter to you if their is a problem with your return. I have had many so I know about this.  Give them no information and just hang-up. They will say they will send the police to your home, tell them fine go ahead. You can go to the IRS website to report a phone scam or scam letter in e-mail as well. Hope this helps someone.

Same as the above happened to me.  First he gave a number of #256-617-3966 which traces back to a mobile phone in Madison County, AL.  The second number he gave on another call is the same as others have here.

He gave no identification of company or business.  Represented himself as of the 'Internal Revenue Service' and as 'Steven Johnson', which is a pretty Anglo-sounding name for a person with a thick indian-like accent and who can't speak English well, not to mention the IRS wouldn't respond in the way he was doing.

He said "not to disregard this message" and that I "would have fines and penalties and could be arrested."  He failed to say in what jurisdiciton or municiplaity or state my 'tax fraud' was supposedly to be filed in.  He wanted my name and social security number (which I'm sure the IRS already has).

In short:  vague, vague, vague without specific identifiers.  The spooky part is he knew my name and my unlisted phone number.

I called the (real) IRS.  They said my tax status was fine.  They said to fill out form 3949-A online at IRS.Gov.  You find it by typing in the form # in the search box of the site.  I did, and others should do it, too.

..oh, and thank you for this site and readers for comments verifying my suspicions.

Just like the other posters, I got the call -- 4 in one day on my answering machine -- from two different guys (both heavily accented, obviously reading a scripts) saying they're from the IRS.  I'm not stupid enough to think that this is how the IRS settles tax problems!  The 5th call on my machine was one of the same guys, saying that his message was for XXX (someone other than me -- he clearly read the wrong name from his list!) and proceeded to read the same script!!!!  Clearly this is a scam.

This same call has been received here several times over the last month. Lisa Isaac and Richard William have both been the callers. I just ask for the callers employee's ID #. That always ends the call. I did call the FTC to complain but I'm not sure to what end.
The question is has any one ever reported any financial loss as a result of these calls?

Same here, 888-369-8976, a man with an Indian accent so thick, I couldn't understand what he said in the message. Except for something at the end about "...IRS, or you will go to jail". Look, this scared the crap out of me, I'm just a little old lady and I haven't done anything wrong. After reading these posts, now I'm mad. Right on, Sarah! Don't anyone let these fraudsters trick you or scare you!

Same thing...
Do these people ever get caught?
Also...has anyone writing these complaints recently lost their wallet or purse?
I lost my wallet in a cab and maybe that's how they get our name and number...?
I'm interested to see if I'm not the only one

Today, I got a phone call from this number, 888-369-8976. A woman with a thick accent claimed to be calling from IRS and wanted to discuss some "legal matters". When I told her that I am not discussing this over the phone and hang up, she immediately called me back. She said "we know everything about you" and provided mailing address, cell phone number, etc. When I asked her to contact me via regular mail she became agitated and told me that "we are sending police to your doorsteps". These scams have become brazen. Who is going to stop them?

I just found out that I had gotten messages from a men with a heavy Indian accent from this number stating that he works for the fraud department of the irs and that I must call him to pay immediately to avoid being arrested. This was a few days ago and the messages weren't even left on my phone. His message was barely understandable. Total fraud and totally getting reported! I don't owe the irs anything! Don't be stupid and give these fraudsters any of your time nor money!

They called from 888-396-8976 and "Lisa Isaac" wanted to know if I have an attorney that can represent me in the courthouse.  I said what did I do? She said this is for the mistake I have done.  I said what was that?  She said they tried to summon me back in 9/2013 and 2/2014 and since nobody was here to accept the summon that the sheriff would be coming to get me.  I laughed and said so what should I do?  And I think she got frustrated with me becase she said "nothing, since I have gotten a hold of you - you have been served".  Then she hung up.  Like the other folks said in the posts below, heavy Asian Indian accent and call center type noise in the background.  I'm pretty sure I'm not in trouble!!!  : )

Like above but too heavy of a foreign accent to understand anything other than "IRS". Couldn't even understand the number they wanted me to call so I needed to use CID to find tel number. Did not call as IRS would send letter followed by calls especially since no tel number is included with any return. 2nd call was from 877-395-3878 so they are using multiple numbers. Heavy call center background noise. So will ignore the call and see what develops.

Thick Indian accent said he was from IRS and there was tax fraud against me.  Told me that I could settle it within the hour and it wouldn't go to the federal courthouse.  I told him I would wire the money and asked where to send it.....just trying to bust them.  He asked if I had a secure line or if I could call him back on my cell phone.  I said my line was secure.  He said I should go outside to make sure.  I told him that was weird.  Then, the line went blank.

I received a call from this number twice today also saying that he was from the IRS and that I would be subject to legal action if I didn't call them back. (I told him that the person he was looking for wasn't here). The caller had a middle eastern accent.

Called 4 times in one day stating that I had been reported to the IRS for tax fraud and if I didn't call back I would be arrested. The IRS wants money not to put people in jail. I know I did nothing wrong and said that the IRS would send a registered letter to me and my accountant then I would return a call.
