I received a phone call with a blocked number and did not answer.  The message left was for someone else who's name I don't know.  The female caller cited a case number and gave the 888-375-5925 telephone number to call in reference to "a complaint that's been filed against you".  It sounded scam-like in the off-hand info dropped in order to pique the recipient's interest.  There was no business name, only a suggestion to "call the office" for details.

Nope, I didn't call back.

I received a call from 888-524-9861 at my job stating that I owed money from a bad check that I had written to Ace Cash Express and that I had to pay today or I was going to be served papers at my job. I ask for paperwork that stated such and he told me that he had sent it in the mail. He was demanding and  rude. How to people like this get your information.

I picked up the fax and it states I owe 512.83 by this Friday tomorrow or else I will b owing 2,306.26 and that I will be served. Im so confused with all this mess. I did call the credit call company they said they sold the debt to another company. Then I call that company and they stated that they sold the account as well. So the last company I talked with said they sold it to GLOBAL PACIFIC GROUP. Global had told me that they are collecting for the credit card company by the name of Plains Commerce which Plains Commerce told me that they sold it. I talk to 3 companies they all said they sold it. Now this Global said I will be served on Monday if I dont have the money by tomorrow and the offer agreement of 512.83 will be NULL and VOID. Where do I go from here?

Pick up the fax. Keep it. In the meantime research & be aware of your rights as a consumer under the FDCPA. It's easy, just Google it or check the links provided on this site. Once a scammer finds out that he's speaking with an educated target he will quickly give up.
Another quick way to repel a fraud is to immediately inform him that all your calls at home & work are being logged & recorded. As long as you immediately tell a caller that the call is being recorded their will be no legal barriers. Laws will vary state to state regarding calls. The bottom line is, tell the caller immediately that the call is being recorded. Once that is done the caller will most likely change his tune or will simply hang up. If that occurs, case closed...he's a fraud!

A fax. is absolutely meaningless. Demand that he sends you a notice of validation, by mail. NOT e-mail or fax.
When he claims, for whatever reason, that he can not do that he has proven himself to be a fraudulent collector or a completely bogus fraud.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.
