CallerID cannot be trusted because hostile callers can send any number they want to appear on your CallerID. This is called spoofing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caller_ID_spoofing  206-397-1126 might be his real number or it might be fake.

"alert window ... popped up even when not working online ... while running real-time scanning virus software" means there's malware living on your hard drive and hope you've gotten rid of it.

I notice that these complaints are from 2010. Aparently they're at it again. Showed me my errors and wanted a tech to have access to my computer so that they could remove them for me. Very emotional indian guy who insisted that I could trust him because how would he know my name, address and number if he hadn't gotten it from my windows registration (Really?!)  Caller ID confirmed that the call originated from 206-397-1126. He provided the 888 number at so that I could check on the company once the malware removal was complete.

We've had similar scams attempt to sway us via very convincing pop-up windows that look like a windows alert window - telling us that we are infected with a critical virus. These have popped up even when not working online.    And all this while running real-time scanning virus software.

Always suspect someone who contacts you offering support for a problem you didn't know you had.

I have registered my two computers with my complete foolishness. They screwed my computer number of times. Ari the guy called himself a supervisor, he is rude, even dont know the professional ethics.

What I found they take money and provide support as a show off. They will offer you free edition of anti-virus, like Avast and AVG free.

Even I found a very interesting thing that this company has two websites, supportonecare/com and mypccare.com. Even  they sale same this to same customers from this two different websites.

I got a call from Ari and George. Ari initiated the call and transferred the call to George last Sunday(4th march).  They said Zeal IT solution will close there business so you have to pay money to the new company. To check their intention I have agreed, they took me to Western Union and asked to pay $339 for three years in the name of Preet Mukherjee. I don't know who is this guy. they said he is financial head. I have sent an email to support@mypccare.com. Still I am waiting for their reply.

I know this voices very well. I am 100% sure about the guys who called me they were from mypccare or supportonecare.

So don't go for them you will pay once but they will use the two website tricks and western union trick.

I rec'd a call today from a Lady with a very heavy indian accent. I told her that I don't talk with anyone whose caller ID does not come up on my phone. She said it was computer generated. I said then if it is computer generated, how did you get my name and number. She said from registering my computer. I asked for her number and looked it up while she was trying to explain herself. I read about this potential scam and she denied it all. I told her that I was contacting Microsoft about this and she hung.

I just got a call from an Idian lady with a different name trying to con me too. She was from MyPcCare with a local phone number 206-397-1113. She provided the tool free number but my phone displayed her number calling from Seattle which is where I live.

I did manage to keep her on the line for 40 minutes while the family listened and laughed as I played along with her scam.

Got a soliciting call from My PC Care this morning.  My PC has been running slow and my husband is the primary user, so I fell for the scam but was suspicious and researched further online on my work computer.  I called them immediately to make them stop, but unfortunately they already have had some access.  Any advice?  What should I do next?

Also received a call from "Peter" or was it "Frank Miller" or "Gunga Din Patel" in Bangladesh? With the same palaver foisted on CybersaurusRexx, to cure all invasive malware interdictions "for a year, for only $195!"  He led me to a page in my computer of column of Warnings! and Errors! Horrors!
He also wanted me to connect with an "expert" that would clear all these errors from my system. Would that remove him one step from his bunko, fraud, hoax, bogus con-scheme culpability?
I told him that I would call him back after asking my guru about his "computer security plan."  And "can guarantee that the technician would reject his plan." I asked how he could guarantee that rejection or his plan without a contract?" "Gunga Din" said that "a purchase receipt would be sent to me and that I would have my Visa credit statement."
Rather than bother my friend or call the con-man back I went to this site under "My pcCare" and became informed of the hoax to make $200 off of naive computer users.
Yes, there should be some way to "NAIL these crooks," but we are in a Neo-Reagan-Bush anti-regulation era of Repugnican obstructionist, extreme capitalism by a Republi-con coup by the fascist military contract funding corporatism corrupted by Mitch McConnell, John Boehner and Eric Cantor, whose treachery is treason to the Constitution and to the middle-class by this American "enemy domestic" that they themselves have sworn to fight and to defeat. That is now left up to us, in the Democratic party with the middle-class workers in their protective unions, to extract the malware by recall of the perfidious, treacherous Republi-con governors that are trying to abolish what collective strength Americans have, in their unions to protect themselves from corporate tyranny, from the malware infection that has interdicted our society by the paid-off political hacks in the Republican-Corporatist party.

I think Stefan is a scammer shill trying to discredit softpedia's accurate description of the current scammer practice of calling victims and taking remote control of victims' PCs. The FTC's warning here http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/alerts/alt121.shtm does not describe remote control at all so Softpedia's news article is a better reference in this regard. I'm honored you b*****d scammers and shills don't like me or my posts.

I got a call to this morning from caller ID: 206-445-6568.  It is the same song and dance 'Indian' company as 888-408-6651; they gave me that 888 number when I asked for a call-back number.  Yes, they say, as best as I could barely understand, that they were contracted to call "Windows PC" users that were having Windows problems (Just how likely would that be?!?)  They did have our name with our home phone number but that is listed; I did use our home phone when registering with Microsoft.  I did let them direct me to the Windows Event Viewer Logs Application list but they would have NEVER gotten my permission for online control of my computer.  I was told the scare story of hard drives crashes and all...  I got rid of them by asking for a call back number so I could call them back in '5 minutes'.  Needless to say, they are still waiting!!  They are bottom-feeding scammers, BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A woman identifying herself as "Christie" from Microsoft called and asked for me by name. I told her to leave a message and she claimed that the person she wants to speak with (my name) has a virus on the computer. Her accent was Middle Eastern. I didn't return the call, but googled the number, only to find out that it is a scam.

Hey CC,
You are a scammer yourself. Why disguise yourself? Your poor English and sentences prove that you yourself need proper lessons in the English language. Better luck next time.

THIS IS A SCAM. Read about the your-PC-is-infected scam here http://news.softpedia.com/news/Cold-Call-Tech ... on-150170.shtml They lie about your PC sending out malware, error messages, etc., and say your PC is about to crash to frighten you into giving them remote control of your PC to fix the nonexistent problem (don't let them!). If they ask you to open the systems tab in eventvwr.msc to see all the errors, these harmless errors are *normal* for any Windows PC (mine has several and it runs just fine). Don't let them take control of your PC because they can download *real* malware, possibly a malware suite, that can spam, steal bank logins and personal info, etc. If they've remoted into your PC, the safest fix is to re-format your drive and re-install your OS assuming you have clean backups of your data. You can try scanning with various antivirus software but scanning may not find all the malware. If you don't know how, get help from friends or pay a local shop to do it. THIS IS A SCAM.

I received a telephone call this morning.  It appears to be the same scam from this number: the individual said he was called from the "Windows Operating System" he had a pronounced south Asian accent, used the name "Peter" and wanted to walk me through a clean up of my computer to eliminate the possibility of corruption of the hard drive which was a widesspread problem.  All this was news to me.  I keep my computer security updates timely and never received any e-mail about this "problem".  That made me suspicious and then he told me he was calling everyone with a Windows operating system in my state!  I don't think even Bill Gates could affortd to do that by telephone so my suspicion increased.  I had an appointment so told the person I would get back with him at another time.

The moe i thought of this the more suspicious I became so I called HP tech support this evening, told my story, and learned that this was a scam.  My caution saved me on this one.

Guy claiming to be "keith" called informing us that 90 thousand computers have a virus that will kill the c drive and motherboard. He said he was affiliated with microsoft. he said he would "walk us through" the removal of the virus, and he did walk us through finding out if the machine was infected.
we hung up on him because we didn't want to give him any personal information at all.
he gave us a number which we looked up to be "support one care"
http://www.supportonecare.com/

They said that the virus traveled through facebook and if our computers had been on any social networking sites they were probably infected already.

When we called back they answered on the first or second ring and there were lots of people in the background. "keith" actually was the one who picked up. I thought that was weird because usually when you call tech support places you end up on hold for a while.

Also, they knew the household name and claimed that they have been calling people with tech inquiries before everyone else to alert them about this virus.
