My parents received the same call but don't speak english. I called and it was indeed a collection agency. They're current on all bills so I wasn't worried. WRONG! They just learned they've been the victim of identity theft, so it's been hell trying to sort all this out.

Even if you're ok with all your payments, I'd just check and make sure it's a genuine mistake and NOT ID THEFT!

Me too, received this same voice message in my cell phone on Aug 15, 2008.
The message is from "GE services, the collector", it asked me to call 1-888-417-6837 regarding "an important matter".
But I never have an late bill payments.
However, I made this call.
In less than a second, a guy answered the phone, and I just told him I got a wrong number.
I never heard any customer representative who can answer a random call-in in less than a second, and this made me feel supicious.

So please IGNORE this message if you also received it.

I received a call on our answering machine.  (We do not have Caller ID.) I was told to call "GC Services" at 888-417-6837 because of "an important matter."  Being wary, I checked for this number on 800notes.com, but found the entry empty.  So, armed with a bit of awareness, I decided to call.

Upon answering the phone, I was greeted by a man saying he worked for "GC Services."  He asked how he could help me.  I told him I received a telephone call asking me to call this number.  He said he would help, and asked how I was doing.  Then, he asked me for my telephone number.  I gave him the number (understanding that we have outgoing Caller ID Blocking) and he asked if a certain person lived at this residence.  I responded no, truthfully, but that we have received calls concerning this person's name.  He then said he would remove this telephone number from their call list, and asked if there was any other way he could help.  I answered "no, just have a good day!" and he replied the same.  

After the call I checked the website of "GC Services," which seems to be gcserv.com.  Their "services" list does include "collection agency."

They didn't ask for any more personal information, but I don't know what I would have been asked if the person whom they mentioned did indeed live at this residence.
