Looks like its probably a marketing call from Verizon about texting - this guy received marketing texts from verizon with 888-453-1918 included as a callback number (and I am now pretty sure that I have received them - and deleted them - too)  -  http://patrickrexroat.blogspot.com/2008/05/24615-sir.html

It's actually a phishing scam.  first they send you a bogus text about being over your calling/texting limit w/ a fake Verizon phone number, and follow up with a bogus phone call.  They are hoping that people will either call the number in the text or answer the phone, and give them account info.  Don't do it, or you will regret it.

I agree with the Verizon phishing scam line below.  It seems it's them.  Don't call them back.

Yes, I got that "bogus text about being over your calling/texting limit" yesterday.  Then this number called me today.  I knew I couldn't be anywhere near a limit, so I ignored the text, but went online to check my account.  Ignore these guys.

This is Verizon trying to SPAM you with upsell messages.  I just checked with them on whether this was a phishing spam (had received calls and text messages), and I got a reply that it was Verizon.  Instead of leaving it at that, I got more messages on my home AND cell numbers, AND an email, suggesting I upgrade my plans.  I don't appreciate unsolicited emails from anyone.  Shame on you, Verizon!

In a cynical age such as this, you could say that Verizon is trying to "upsell" you something, but if it's what I think, they would make more money by not calling and letting you go over one of your limits.  Note that the call occurs before you go over the limit.  For the record, here is my experience:

I got a text message yesterday, from Verizon, saying I was on track to incur overage charges.  I looked up my account online and, indeed, my account was 100 minutes from being over the limit (my son had been talking to his girlfriend while on Spring break and had used 500 minutes in one week, putting us within 100 minutes of the limit).  Then today I got a call from the 888-453-1918 number but missed the call, and they left no message.   The identical sequence (TXT then CALL) happened two years ago during a family emergency out of town when I was using a large number of minutes.  At that time they DID ask for my cell phone number and name when I answered, but it was legitimate.  They offered to put me on a plan with more minutes but I declined and was careful for the next week until the month was over.  When I had SPRINT and went over, they just sent me a huge bill so I appreciate the courtesy call.  Of course, since I didn't answer this time I cannot be sure it was Verizon, but it is the same pattern as two years ago.

YES it is VerizonWireless trying to up sell you on either minutes and/or texting plan or BOTH. I received an email yesterday stating that I was on track to go over my minutes and/or text msg plan. I went online and I had indeed gone over my allotted text mgs. Today I received a call from this number. I did not answer the call. They did not leave a message.

Same thing ... got a text message followed by this call, but since I didn't answer it, no message was left.  I WILL NOT submit to upselling under any circumstances (Verizon, are you reading this?) -- so telemarketers, don't waste my time and your money.

It's a Verizon solicitation. I just paid my bill this morning; no where near the limits and never have been. They call and text every month about overages that don't exist. Ignore them. The rates are worth a little hassle.

If it's really a call from Verizon or an affiliate, why do they hide behind a phone number? Why not let the caller id show their name? Especially if it's a courtesy call, Verizon would want their name slapped all over it. Courtesy is good advertisement.

Appears to be legitimate Verizon call that one of your resources (e.g., minutes or text messages) is being used at a rate that will cause it to go over before the end of the month if you keep using it at the same rate.  In a cynical age you could say they have a "sales undercurrent" but they would make more money by not calling and letting you go over and pay a huge bill.  You have the choice to be careful until your plan resets or upgrade and keep using the resource.

phishing scam trying to gain access to your verizon account, they have managed to obtain a list of number registered to verizon, at&t, sprint etc. they have been scamming anybody they can, if they get your billing code and birthday, they can run up your bill, add a line, buy phones, cancel account, start a new account, costing you lots of money. If needing to do business over the phone, only do when you call first requesting a service. NEVER EVER do anything over the phone if they call you first, same goes for auto warranties and printer toner scams... i am a receptionist, so on a daily basis i get about 3 scam calls a day telling me our "toner shipment needs to be expedited" or "we're about to exceed our minutes"... on a land line...covered by verizon!

This is a courtesy call from Verizon if you are close to going over on your minutes or texts. They are trying to help you avoid overage charges and obviously the way to do that is to up your plan. It might be worth it rather than paying per minute!

Note that it IS Verizon and they ARE trying to upsell you -- unsolicited no less.  I had both text and phone calls from them.  So, I contacted them via their website customer service link by email to see if this was a phishing scam.  They had the nerve to call me back on both my cell and home phone in reply to upsell me -- and they also sent me an email with the same upsell message.  If they try to offer me more unsolicited "upgrades", I will dump them faster than they can send me  one more SPAM call, text or email.
