Just received a text message from this number, I'm a sprint customer. I did a google search on Southeast Financial and went to this company's home page which states that this text message is a scam being sent to both customers and non customers and they are aware of scam. This is what it says:
beware: false text message alert
We have recently been notified that fraudulent text messages are being sent to members and non-members alike. These messages state "Your SOUTHEAST FINANCIAL FCU account is closed due to unusual activity, call us now at 8883914771." Please beware, this message is NOT from Southeast Financial and we would NEVER contact you via text message regarding account information. If you have any concerns regarding any message you receive of this kind, via phone, e-mail, text or any other method, call us at 615-743-3700 or 800-521-9653.

Just got the same text message, and I am a Sprint customer.

My husband got the same message on his cell AND we got a message on the machine at home. He thought maybe someone had stolen his identity, which would have been hilarious given my husband's trail of financial failure. would have served them right, but still glad I checked here and verified my gut feeling. thanks for speaking up, everyone.

just read this on local news channel 5 nashville
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Police warn bank customers about a texting scam targeting mobile devices.
Scammers are using the popularity of text messaging to try to rip off consumers.
One Midstate woman told NewsChannel 5 she received mobile spam or smishing on her cell phone.
"I knew that the bank would not text my cell phone if there was a problem. I mean, I knew right away that was not right," said Pattie Mitchell, mother of three a customer service manager.
She replied to the message by dialing the number sent to her phone.
A recording requested that she enter her credit card number.
She said the recording mentioned Southeast Financial.
Known as "smishing," the messages might ask a recipient to register for services to extract their credit card numbers. The messages may also allow viruses to enter the recipient's device.
"If they receive one of these messages, just delete it. Don't call the number that they direct you to in the text message. Don't go to the website they tell you to go to. Just delete it," said John Breyault, vice president of public policy for the National Consumers League.
Consumers need to be aware of scammers whether they're contacted via e-mail, telephone calls or mail.
Experts suggest consumers to be skeptical of contact they didn't initiate. Also, remember than banks already have information about their account holders therefore they wouldn't contact consumers for new numbers.
"I mean, we have mortgage to pay and children to take care of," Mitchell said.
Mitchell said someone may take the bait during the current economic downturn.
The real Southeast Financial warned customers on its Web site that the text message Mitchell received was not from their institution.
Experts advise consumers to delete such messages if the recipient doesn't recognize the sender's number.
Fraud investigators said getting cell phone numbers is not difficult. Scammers use sophisticated software that constantly trolls the Internet

Got the text from them about 5 minutes ago. Never heard of it before so searched here and found its a scam. This is the first spam/ scam text ive ever had. I signed up for the "National Do not call list" at 1-888-382-1222 about a year ago and have never had a sales call since. I wonder if they can do anything about the texts?

Yeah, i got teh same thing... Don't reply to it... if you even try to type in the web address there is no such domain... So don't do it... Stupid scammers... they don't even know how to make it look legit... i just hope no one is dumb enough to call... I've heard of scams from different countries that send you the number to call and you are charged $1000 per minute... and the US can't do anything about it because it is not in their domain.

Sounds like a scam. Received an SMS from this number:

Subject: NOTICE

Report it to your state and local law enforcement agency by filing a police report and provide them the call back number. A lot of Sprint users have been hit with this text message on 10/14 and 10/15 in the Tennessee area. I'm one of them. I hope they will investigate and take action

I received a text message saying my account at Southeast Financial FCU was closed due to unusual activity. Considering I have never heard of such an institution and therefore do not have an account with them, I dialed the number out of curiosity and received a series of disconnected beeps.
When I checked out the domain/website (www.southeastfinancial.com), sure enough, on their homepage was a warning about false text messages; however, they listed different toll-free numbers than the one that I have listed here, so just be aware. I am also calling Southeast Financial FCU, located in Nashville, Tenn., to make them aware.
