FTC just sued a large group of collection agencies located in the city of Corona, alleging numerous violations of debt collection laws.

If you are having any problems with illegal debt collection practices, and in particular if they are coming from a collection agency in southern California, or near Corona CA, contact FTC.

They are a debt collector.  If you believe they are violating the law or they are calling you in error, looking for someone else, but won't stop calling you, you should file a complaint with your state Office of Attorney General, Bureau of Consumer Protection.

I got a call from an unknown number, but the message said to call the infamous 888-519-1310, it reaches the desk of Jeffrey landon. I am not sure what states these people are hitting, I live in Virginia. They keep calling at least once a month for the last 4 months. I kept ignoring their calls, finally today I decided to call them back and left a message, that was before I did a google search; little did I know such scam was going on.  I kick myself for calling them back, as the advice here is to not have any communication with these bottom feedese. This is definitely a scam because I have never had any any unpaid debt and have a credit score above 800. The scam for me is that they have some "legal paper". If I keep getting contacted by them I will contact the Virginia authorities.

Today I received a message on my answering machine and a man with the deepest voice he could muster up, garbled some words on purpose then said Clerks office calling regarding "pending legal action" and to call plaintiff at 888-519-1310 .If they did not receive a return call within 24 hours then they would deem address as correct,CLICK!  No name of Agency,no creditor's name,no balance owed, nothing?
Well,I was a registered process server and the Clerks Office does NOT call defendants on behalf of plaintiffs, thats what I got paid to do,only in rare circumstances would I call a witness or other friendly respondant to set up a time to serve them. I worked different hours, did stake outs, went to banks to issue writs, file legal papers, etc. This agency is the scum of the earth. Also, you have to receive a bill in the US mail stating what you owe, etc.
Sometimes sneaky collectors will work their way around the legal system and issue a writ without notifying you of intent. They can then put a freeze on your bank account. Ro see if they are legit, say you just filed a chapter 11 or 7 and not to call anymore. If legit, they will want to know the name of your attorney, give a false one or hang up and decide what to do and fast. Otherwise,if they don't ask, then they do not know the law as a reputable collection agency knows that once you are in bankruptsy, its against the law to call you anymore and if they do,they can be sanctioned.I was in a car accident 2 years ago and then my credit was shot as I could not pay my bills:( I am now on SS,disabled and can barely make ends meet.

I received a phone call awhile back as did my parents regarding some summons that they were trying to serve me.  As it turned out they had my previous address from 7 years ago.  I called left a message and never heard from them for almost a month.  Then they called back, I spoke to a Larry Waters this time around and told him that I had not been at this address for 7 years and that I left a message with my new information, along with the File number I was to reference.  The debt they said was from a payday loan which I had taken out years back and then lost my job & it never got paid back and by now I forgot all about it.  I have been recently working on paying off past debts so I figured this was valid, seemed a little sketchy that in 7 years time they could not locate me at a new address.  They were looking for $2,000-$3,000 to pay off this debt, well I knew it wasn't that much that I had taken out, not even close, but figured with interest and all.  They also said about possible charges being filed with my local police/DA office.  I was very concerned so I worked out a settlement of $528.00, of which I have already paid $264 and then the last payment they cut down to $200 and I have paid $100 of that.  Now reading all this I am afraid I have been scammed from a debt that is over 7 years old and in WI the statute is 6 years.  Please help, what do I do?  Should a file a dispute with my bank and get my money back?  This is all tied in with CM Association (CMAG) out of Corona, CA.  The phone number actually goes to the office of Jeffrey Landon, whoever that is.

Some CMAG chick told me to straighten my attitude out after they threatened me over the phone.  They still have not told me why they called.  I will calling the courthouse to get a summons placed on them.  Its illegal to threaten anyone.  Good luck to them and their stetchy system.

People have been calling for some time looking for some strange person.  They have been told repeatedly to stop calling, but they do not.  Same message gets left in voice-mail:

"This is Michael Jones.  If I do not hear from you by noon tomorrow, I will not be able to help you."

First they were calling from some Maria, now they call asking for some Rolando.  Wish they would stop!

Left a message on my answering machine saying I would need to be home between 9 and 4 to be served with papers. Gave no name or company name whatsoever--said I could call "the plaintiff" at this number. The caller ID is spoofed and comes up "Unknown Number 608-786-7456". She then called my mother, who lives in another city, and told her they would be serving me with papers there, at an address where I've never lived. I have no outstanding debts and have never received any letters from this debt collector.

So if they will not give me the original bill I should not take them seriously.....I thought they were kind of shady as they asked if I would be home between the hours of 9-4 to serve some papers......I asked them who would be serving them?  They said maybe a sherriff or a local police offier....this is a small town and I called the chief who is a good friend he said they would have to come from CALIF or have a representative here file a suit in our courts and then I would get served.....and the servers do not work from just 9-4.......I really do not remember a debt from 9 years ago...

Legit collectors per section 809 of the FDCPA http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf *must* tell you at initial contact, or send you paperwork within 5 days of initial contact, the following:
1. $amount of debt,
2. name of the current creditor (which may differ from the original creditor who might have sold your debt),
3. a statement that that debt will be assumed to be valid unless you dispute in writing within 30 days,
4. a statement that that if you do dispute in writing within 30 days, the collector must mail you written verification of the debt,
5. a statement that if you ask the collector in writing within 30 days, the collector must send you the name and address of the original creditor if it's different from the current creditor.
If you don't get the 5 disclosures, orally or in writing (you do not have to ask for them, the FDCPA requires collectors to provide them), treat the collector like you would any SCAMMER.
Has the statute of limitations for your state http://www.fair-debt-collection.com/SOL-by-State.html expired on your debt? If expired, don't pay.
Collectors generally have to be licensed by your state to practise (collect debt) in your state and you can find out by calling your state Attorney Generals Office. Ask if a license is required and does this collector have one. If not licensed, don't pay and file a complaint.
