This law office has calls about 15 times a day looking for someone who doesn't live here. I called and reported this law office and they said I was removed from the list although were VERY rude and bothered that I called. This supposed "law" office is a scam!

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

I got a message on my voice mail today from somebody at this number, couldn't understand what he said his name was, but said the law offices of curley and ???? Googled the number he left me and found this site. Wouldn't say what account this was in reference to, only that it was "imperative" that he talk to me ASAP, and that I not make any decisions about anything until I talked to him first! Furthermore, he called me by the name I commonly use with friends, not the name that all of my accounts are set up with, so immediately I was suspicious. Will wait to see if i get anymore calls from them and see what happens when I ask for more info and written proof that I owe somebody something. If he gets obnoxious and pushy he will be reported to the state ATTY. Generals office, along with the BBB.

It's sort of "comforting" to know that this is not just happening to our family...they have been hounding my son and our house for months now!  Are they even legit?  We keep asking for them to provide us with some sort of written documentation that proves my son owes any money, but they never do and just give us more of a runaround.  I interjected a call just last night from a woman named Michelle who said we had till noon today to pay off our son's debt.  When he talked to her this morning, he offered to set up a payment plan or that he would pay in full by end of January, but she wouldn't budge.  He insisted on seeing some paperwork but she said she could not until it was paid and that she would need to now "send it to a higher court" to which he replied, "so go ahead".  Needless to say, I will be taking the advice of "Joe Blow" above and be sending some long overdue letters!

Thanks to everyone for their advice and comments!

I received a letter today and it sounds like a scam! First, their attorneys are only licensed in Maryland, NJ and NY, not the state I am from. Two, at the bottom of the letter, it states that no attorney in our firm has personally reviewed the particular circumstances of your account. Third, they are trying to play it like they are lawyers. I am reporting them to the attorney general and several other places for misrepresenting themselves.

I just want to add my concern with some of the rest of these calls. I keep getting the calls, but half the time they hang up before anyone answers and I can ask a question.  I attempted to get the address information to call them to get an address to send them a letter, but the woman on the other end was so rude, she ended up hanging up on me.  This is my daughters account, and I've tried to tell them.  I did find an address here, so I'm going to try to send them a letter to cease and desist.  Hope it works.

Got a call from when I should be sleeping from this ****** named Walker who would not listen and wasn't going to take my word for it that I didn't know who they were looking for. Told them to remove the phone number and not to call again. He would not shut up until I said I was reporting them to the government. Then he hung up!

WE should ALL report these calls to the government for violation of the Do Not Call List and aggressive
collection calls to unknown persons!

My mother recieved a call today for an account that I owe.  A SMALL account that I honestly forgot about.  I am 34 and have NEVER put my mothers name as a contact on anything. The best part is that they actually left her a voicemail stating that if I didn't return the call, they would have no choice but to go forward with legal action!!  My mom called me all worried.  I called and told them to take her number off and that she was never given as a contact on this account.  This is just complete bullsh*t.  I wonder how they would like it if they received a call from a lawyer threatening a harrasment suit??  Just a thought.  I think there is enough of us to take them on..  :)

This firm called my office looking for someone with my last name that I have never heard of.... the first time I called (a law office) and explained I was not related and do not know the person. I was told I would be removed from the call list. The second time I called and inquired how my name and employment was located and linked to this person. A woman by the name of Victoria Davidson that I found to be very rude and argumentative told me that I was probably located on the internet and associated through the last name. I find this to be harassment and I am going to inquire with my attorney if I receive any more contact from this office.

Attention ALL Debtors!  Very Important!!! Before you start to get behind on your payments for all of your various accounts go online and change your phone numbers to the local Dial up Internet numbers. Just google the local access numbers for your area aol earthlink verizon att sbc-global etc....  So that when  these b*****ds call they all they get is a headache from the annoying beeps and screeches from the modems. Works well if you can get it done before they start collections. F*** these collections a**holes in the rear and in the ear!

They've blatantly lied to me stating "the phone number was already on the account"...the problem with this is, it's my landlord's phone number, not mine.

I admit I owe some money, but for them to start calling and harassing my landlord is unacceptable.  The account they have in their possession, without a doubt, has my personal number on it because that is the number I used when I opened the account.

There is no rhyme nor reason why my landlord's number would be on MY account so all I can guess is they looked at the address on the account, went to www.whitepages.com, and dialed the first number they hit on.  Their like little ghetto hackers or something, must make them feel good they can track a person down.  LOL

Shady stuff there.

This is a debt collecting "law office" that clearly goes over the line. I recieved a call from them yesterday looking for the previous owner of my home. I purchased this home almost 5 years ago. Now...everyone knows that when you move into a new home or new apartment the phone number is changed, right? So my phone number was NEVER given to this or any company as a contact for the former home owner. This means that the "law office" must have looked at the debtors former address and then done some kind of reverse phone search to find my phone number. The thing that pisses me off the most is that I pay my bills. I am not so much as even 1 day or 1-cent late on A-N-Y-T-H-I-N-G and yet I AM GETTING COLLECTION CALLS FOR OTHER PEOPLE! Stop the collection maddness!
