I got a call from someone claiming to be Adam Smith.  Right away I knew it was some Indian guy in India based off the accent so I was thrown off guard on why he would have an American sounding name.  I believe it is a scam as he claimed to want to help me with my computer as he received reports that I sent to Microsoft.  It just did not sound right and very unprofessional and I just told him that I did not appreciate him calling me and taking me for a fool.  I'm tired of these scams as I even got the Nigerians sending me letters to my personal email asking for my bank account information which I never gave a few years back. It is always one scam after another...

Just got a call from some Indian sounding lady saying the same thing as all you... She got reports from MS that my computer has a virus (don't know the last time I had a virus... 2003?). Immediately knew it was a scam and played along at which point they hung up pretty quickly. B*****ds.

I got a call on my cell phone from this number.  They claimed to be from Microsoft and that my computer had sent a bunch of error reports and that was how they got my phone number.  They wanted me to do something with my "home computer".  I told them never to call me again, and the Indian sounding person on the other end said "F*** You" and hung up on me.

I received a call on my private cell phone. Caller ID said, "Unknown." They told me they were certified Microsoft technicians and that my computer had a virus and asked me to call them back at (888) 532-8229 when I got home. I checked with Microsoft via their online Customer Service Chat feature. The log of our chat session is below. Microsft said this is a known scam and urged me to not call them back, not accept further calls from them, and not give them any information. Microsoft also asked me to report them to the FTC. If you experience this same fraud, please report it to the FTC. Instructions for doing so can be found at: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/telemarketing/tel19.shtm.

Here is the log of my Microsoft Customer Service Online Chat session on 8-9-12:

Jed: Thank you for waiting, Brad. I understand you have received a suspicious phone call from an individual claiming to be a Microsoft Technical Support professional.

Jed: Please don't call them back or entertain their call if they do call again. This is a known scam. Criminal organizations are using Microsoft?s name to try to gain your trust. I can categorically confirm that neither Microsoft nor our partners make unsolicited phone calls to help solve computer problems.

Brad: Phew. I'm glad I checked with you first. Thanks for saving me from a lot of unnecessary trouble.

Brad: Can't Microsoft get that phone number blocked by the phone company?

Jed: I have forwarded the number already to an internal department tasked with dealing with these people. You may also report this call to the Federal Trade Commission.

Jed: Here's the link with the contact details: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/telemarketing/tel19.shtm

Brad: I will. Thank you.

Just got a call on my cell phone from this number.  I didn't answer it as I didn't recognize the number.  They left a voicemail of only background noise, like a call center, where people were chatting in the background, but no one said anything in the voice mail.  Obviously I'm not going to call back the number.  Neither should you.  Anyone who can't bother to leave a clear message does not deserve a call back. I'm sure they are scam artist scum.

I got a call from someone as well saying he was from Microsoft and that my computer had been sending data to Microsoft. He wanted to know if I was in front of my computer. I was not, so I asked him for a number to call him back on. He gave me this number 888-532-8229 and said his name was Justin and to ask for him.

I thought this is suspicious and wondered how he got my phone number and had associated it with my computere. After reading these other comments, I'm not calling him back.
