I received a call in late April 2014 stating that I owed a debt from 2012 and that a summons was being issued for me to appear in court for check fraud. They even gave me a "docket number". I had been out of work during that 2012 time frame and had several loans then. They had quite a bit of information about me, so I believed the caller, even though I did not recognize the company name. I paid $639.11 using my debit card. I got another call this week from a different number, saying they were a different litigation company and saying that I owed a different debt (to a company that I had already settled the debt with a year ago)of $1200, and the same thing would happen to me if I didn't pay within 3 hours-summons for court, go to jail for check fraud. While I was speaking with them, my sister called, saying that she received a call from the first number (southwest) looking for me, saying I would go to jail, but they gave the current "docket number". That made me suspicious. I googled the number and found out it is a scam. Now my banking, my personal info and names and phone numbers of references have been compromised. I fear that my identity has been stolen. I called the attorney general and they are sending me a complaint form. My bank account has been frozen, my SSN has been frozen for 90 days. I don't know if the bank will reimburse the funds or not. I am completely ashamed because I fell for this, and then they tried it again! I have never been so scared in my life as I was talking to them!

Don't fall for this! If they call from this number or you get a call stating you need to call this number, do not do it! I have had both happen! It's a total scam! They call saying you owe money on past payday loans, I didn't even have past payday loans, when I told them that he got irate with me and started yelling. I hung up on him so they called back right away saying I needed to call back to the number since I hung up or they would pursue legal matters. It's crazy. So unprofessional.

I had the same exact same thing, pretty much to the same exact dollar amount, told to me when this number called me! Who are these scum bags??? They are the ones who need to be arrested instead of telling me they will have me arrested. How are they getting so much info on us?

A Mr. Bah telling me I must pay today,
If not I'll be served papers or even worse. Who doesn't give out their first name unless they have something to hide? Big ol' scam! Wouldn't give me their address.
Wouldn't send me email proof of debt I owed.

They are working on it. Thanks for your help and the info. I appreciate it! I hope they can get it back for me.

Either the scammers are hiding behind the facade of another company, or they are spoofing this number.

YES! Go to the bank and have them reverse the charge on the basis of fraud. Do it quicktime. Tell them what happened.
Report them to the police and your local attorney general. They might be able to trace the transaction.

| May 2014-05-04 14:50:04 Unknown |
I received a call from them and believed them so I made a payment. Is there anyway that I can get my bank to reverse this where it won't go through? They said I had an outstanding debt with a djr company.
Caller: Southwest/universal

people from southwest called my job and my husbands job, about a 4 year old loan by my son. Very polite but insistent about making a payment or my son would go to jail for check fraud. I got calls from California, Hawaii, and Atlanta,georgia. they had a lot of information, but would not answer any straight questions. I called back, and gave the ex. number that was direct to a Mr. Bah, Universal Processing in Atlanta, but got the voice mailbox to Southwest in California. obviously, not kosher!

Ignore them. Total scam. They are trying to frighten you by throwing about useless legal terms. If they say they are attorneys then you ask them in what state and are they licensed and what is their bar number. Nine times out of 10 they'll stammer and hang up. If they do give you a bar number, and a state, look it up.
They sound like cheap kitchen-table debt scammers to me. If you have legal counsel, follow her instructions. Personally I think these guys are simply trying to scare you into giving them money. Bankruptcy filings are usually public record, so they may have simply gone through old files in the hope of catching you forgetting something.
What some of these scammers like to do is make threats that you have written a bad check. Again, they are trying to scare you by implying you've committed some sort of crime. Don't fall for it. If you had written a bad check the bank would have notified you and the police and a police representative would have talked to you about it. See how they use scare tactics?
Anyway report 'em: https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection
If they keep on bothering you work with your own attorney, to see about legal remedies.
| CWG40 2014-05-02 21:33:37 Unknown |
Total scam. Most likely by kitchen-table debt scammers. Ignore them. If they have a legitimate debt then tell them they must send you a copy of it with all particulars and MAIL IT BY US Mail only. No e-mail. They don't do this, tell them to go to hell!
Don't let them frighten you by throwing useless legal terms and threats at you.

My father recieved a call from this number for me and the person told him that he was an attorney and trying to contact me to serve me some papers. I called and they had all of my person information and they said it was a payday loan that I had from 2012. I advised them that I filed bankruptcy and that the amount was included in that but they gave me a total different amount. The first person I spoke with gave me an amout of 710.00 and then the last person gave me an amount of about 2 thousand dollars. That was after all of the fees. I called may attorney and she adv me to let them serve me and then I could sue them. But everything was inluded in the bankruptcy so they could not collect. Then they tried to say that it was fraud for writing a known bad check. That part of it was covered under the bankruptcy but the rest wasn't and that I had to pay usin a credit card and I had to do it then. they never gave their name but they said they were out of Atlanta , GA

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:
?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.
If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.
