The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>

Will not stop calling me!! They keep telling me there is a lawsuit for an unpaid debt that I don't have. Every time they tell me to give them payment info (bank account # or credit card #) over the phone and they will drop the lawsuit.. I have told them to stop calling me at least 10 times. They will not stop calling.

Got a voicemail today from a man with a heavy accent saying that I needed to listen to this message carefully and then proceeded to say that my address needed to be verified because legal documents were going to be served and then gave me a number to call: (888) 600-2465.  OK when you are going to be served papers nobody calls you to let you know.  What a joke!  I received a call like this a couple years ago.  I was stupid then and fell for it but I stopped myself before I gave out any real info.  As the man started really pushing for me to pay a "settlement" price on the debt immediately with a credit card I got very suspicious and Googled the name and number.  Glad I did.  All you can do is to not acknowledge to caller.  It's useless to report them to the BBB or FTC/FCC because nothing is ever done about it.  Maybe everyone who has received a call from this "company" should file a Class Action Suit because then maybe something would be done.

These idiots called yesterday. I call back and they answer "Corporate", no company name or anything. Then tell me I owe on a card that I never used, has never come up on my credit report, and the company has never attemtped to collect from me!! They then tell me this will go to court. LOL. When I request information be sent to me they tell me they can't send anything out until a payment is made. I guess I sounded like an idiot that would pay on something without even knowing anything about this company. So when I basically tell them to f*** off, I get another voicemail requesting that I confirm my address for delivery of "documents". I'm glad I didn't provide any personal information to these scum bags and I did some research. This is too funny.

Call came up as unknown left a very stern and professionally threatening message. Stating unable to serve me important documents, this was attempt to serve...inability to do so would result in adverse consequences out of my control...blah, blah, blah. Then left the 888-600-2465 number with agent or id number...I always update my address, phone numbers, etc. If you don't know that info, there's probably a good reason. Reported this call.

Debt Collector
Same story here but I might have a little more information. These guys call every once in a while, and have recently starting calling my parents' number in another state, often between 6 and 7 am, asking for my wife and leaving a message with a number. They (senior parents) called the number back and spoke to a main who they described as belligerent and threatening, he said he had legal papers they were trying to serve to my wife (a huge red flag as that is illegal to mention to anyone but someone you are serving papers to). They also claimed they had tried to serve us papers where we live and gave the correct address, which isn't true as we both work from home. He then gave my parents a number and his name which was obviously an alias so I won't waste my time listing it. I traced his number to a cell phone carrier in Upland California which listed the following information:

Bernice E Marlo

Age: 98 Years

Relatives:
Bernice Marlo

Po Box 5575
Diamond Bar, CA 91765

860 Moringside Dr #C417
Fullerton, CA 92835

We have received no mail notices of any kind, nor have my wife's parents, and the debt I think this is relating to is at least 10 years old. This place claims to verify employment information, leaves messages about a person being in the area to serve papers, and other tactics in order to scare people into payment, which would likely be the worst possible thing you could do, many debt collectors ask for check payments solely so they have access to your bank account info and those are the legitimate ones. I would have no problem in talking to these people or dealing with papers if it was a real company and not obviously some shady guy or group of people. Likewise I would have no problem paying a debt legally owed, but these people neither own the debt nor do they represent in any official way the original debt seekers.

I don't really see the point in fake debt collecting, it's just ripping people off by why go through the extra effort to research past uncollected debts and try to collect them illegally, it doesn't seem worth it and it's ridiculous that the people calling me to collect on my wife's debts are probably struggling more than most to get by, but I guess debt collecting would pretty laid back work if you can get it.

I'd also suggest recording these calls, this guy was somewhat threatening and the the address with the PO listed is or was at one time "Interstate Arms Corporation offers the Norinco (Sports USA, PO Box 5575, Diamond Bar, CA 91765; phone: 818-885-6910)" also probably not a good thing, and another reason I wouldn't open a line of dialogue with them. I would contact them to legitimize the debt they are claiming to own, but since they don't have any real information and are already breaking the law it would probably just bait them more.

This is another poor attempt to scare people into paying debts that no longer exist. They won't send you any paperwork or a valid statement showing the things they are accusing you of owing. They will gladly take your CC# though! They finally sent me a letter to my WORK even though they had my home address!!!! It was the most generic letter. The address they had was UPS box#, essentially like a PO Box number. I had asked to send me an address where I can send the "payment" to. After days of investigating these morons I was able to locate the address where I was receiving these harassing phone calls. It turned out to be a home in a neighborhood in Corona, CA! Its amazing how the internet can locate these scam artists phone numbers.
Don't beleive anything they tell you like you need to appear in court or they will garnish your wages, its all BS!!!
What I think they're doing know is using an APP to mask their real phone number or getting a free number from a Text Free app and then dumping the number after they get what they want. If they can't produce a valid phone number or real office address you know its BS. Oh and the best part is when they know your on to them they start swearing at you, as if a real collection agency would do that.
BRING IT ON A-HOLES!!!!!
