Debt Collector
I've been frauded, and I do believe that this guy is the criminal, he uses this number
1-800-215-1921 and a fake form to assess information about your fraud case so he
can determine how deep you've pursued the case.. I contacted capitol one, and they would be stupid to outsource fraud, I mean it makes no sense.. I do believe the naysayers on here are in fact supporting the fraud or are under suspicion that it isn't. I'll tell you what I know..

The guy sounds like he is black, he has poor diction, he did not seem to care about me, he talked over me, he would not discuss my case, he was more concerned with "if I knew who it was".. I told me that I had already closed the fraud case with that card. I determined from how he spoke that he was "not a professional", he sounded like a collector more than a experienced investigator. He also mentioned different numbers on the charges than were on my credit report, even the credit card company had confirmed the numbers I had.. I told him I did not have the full credit card number, and he filled out the numbers I did not have.. I recall one credit card company say they were not at freedom to release those numbers without proper authorization..

Keep one thing in mind, these people only commit shallow fraud, they won't go to the extent of assuming your full identity because you have enough people who know you, they only want to get in deep enough that they can fraud the credit card companies and banks.. The deeper they go the more information can be traced back to them. They may even tend to fraud black people more, because a documentary I saw on AIDS in black america states that black people tend to be concerned about "their business" and try to keep things secret, therefore a lot of information goes unreported, like credit card fraud, rapes, etc.. I admit that its the white america that did it to them, examples being the 60's housing projects in St. Louis and how people were segregated by the LA police in Los Angeles, I've seen documentaries on these.. Okay I'm sounding like oen pretty paranoid, but at least I'm original.. Originality counts..

Accountability is half of security, accountability is how you fight criminals, because they don't want to be accountable.. The other half of security is "encryption" and privately held ID's.. They care more about that.. But the idea is to draw them in and find out as much as you can about them.. Such as asking them for a name so you can contact them through capitol one's main line.

It is my belief that it is not one person but a crime network that is involved in this..

I decided to hide my name, but the amount of detail I gave, and the care I give to this, I feel would be enough to tell that I am real. The name is of someone I distantly know, who might be able to recall I worked with the party boy surfer and that curly hair graphics professor, and the gay jewish media dept head with glasses and white beard white hair. Gwen used to head an organization in the 90s.

this is a valid Capital One fraud phone number.  each one of the "cases" is assigned to an representative ,hence the different number than what you'll find on their website.  this is not some "inside job"- thats retarted.  paranoid much?  differnet systems of record make it difficult for a random agent to tell what one of the fraud specialists does.

Received Call from "Capital One Fraud Protection Department."  Someone (unintelligible name)using your ID applied for CC card. Please call 888.602.2074 to confirm.....(Called number)...Automated asked if I was..(unintelligible) press 1, if not press 2.  2 response; If (unintelligible) lives there press 1, if they have never lived there press 2 (answer 2)  Thank you...they hang up.

Here's why this is way beyond strange.  I applied/was accepted/emailed card enroute today by Capital One-no other accounts.  Hmmmmm... Brand new recent traffic being fished/speared/vished

CAPITAL ONE, ARE YOU LISTENING???  I ordered this card from my HIGHLY secure, I mean HIGHLY secure, did I say really, no REALLY,REALLY HIGHLY SECURE Department of Defense Agency responsible for Network IA SECURITY Computer via your https (verified) website?  YOU HAVE AN IN-HOUSE PHISHER! (can I make it any clearer?)

I called Capital One and tried to express this and no one seemed to really care.  Bye bye, Capital One, the reason I applied to your card was previous fraud on my one CC and I needed a back up!  Could you at least seem a little interested?  You did not care... in the least... on the phone..."You can call the BBB..." No, someone is doing something to you, your customers, your cardholders...."Thank You Sir and Have a Nice Day...."  YOU IDIOTS!

Just a cursory checking on this via Google shows this is an ongoing problem! That's how I got here.  See the thread below?  IT IS ON YOUR END CAPITAL ONE-MOREOVER IN YOUR HOUSE.  It isn't a hack on the DoD--I work on high level IA and one of your employees is up to something, but for the life of me I can't figure out what/why as they asked for none of the typical obvious information ignorant people hand out???? Maybe, they're just making you look stupid?  ARE YOU LISTENING CAPITAL ONE?  Lord knows I'm trying to help.

Similar...auto message on parents machine where I have not lived in 20 years.  Again, similar to others in that I just applied for the card 2 days prior.  It was late when my Mom called about this and I was stupid and called the number.  Then I called Capital One.  They put me through 5 different numbers including India twice.  One guy that was supposed to be from Fraud Dept. said this 888 number was not theirs and "didn't know what to tell me other than it wasn't them that called".

How is it that numerous people get this call days after applying.  Scammer is just randomly lucky in hitting them?  Why calling relatives?

Got this call 4 times in one day.  I called Chase, who I actually have a card with, and they had me call Capital One at 800-215-1921, which was actually the recorded referral number I received when I called back the 888-618-8905 number.  Capital One told me that it was a fraud department number, but to call 1-800-215-1921, which is a direct line to their fraud department.  I called and they had no record of me having or applying for a card.  It is a legit number, I just don't know why they called.

I have three calls in the past six days, purportedly from Capital One, to verify application information for three different individuals.  When I call back the number that was left on the two messages or the one phone call I took, they have no record of my name or number.  I have never had or applied for a Capital One card.

I recently applied for a Capital One credit card.  This evening, I received a telephone message from "Capital One's fraud protection department" instructing me to "call 1-888-602-2074 within 10 days and follow the steps to verify my account information."  I suspected a phishing attempt, so called Capital One on a number posted on their website.  The third level security rep confirmed that no record of a call to me appeared in the customer service log and advised me not to return the call, also that my fledgling account "had not been compromised." I just hope the card actually arrives.

It appears that this really is Capital One but don't call this number anyway.  Why would you call some toll-free number some automated caller leaves on your answering machine to contact your credit card company?!  Call the number on your card!

In my case, after some digging, the rep determined that they were just trying to offer me a balance transfer.

I got a call from this number and I just called capital one (number from there website) and spoke to somebody in there fraud department and they told me that it IS a legitiment call and they told me the date that they actually called (which was accurate). Told me that it is just a verification to verify that it was actually me that filled out the application. So either the reps at capital one are not on the same page and are giving false information or something.

Got a call today asking me to call this number, and it also was for a completely different person. I also recently applied for a credit card. What really upsets me is they had no way of verifying that the number was legitimate. Why the heck would it be an "inside job" if the insiders already have all my information.

Why is it so hard to do reverse look ups on these phone numbers? You'd think they'd be registered somewhere.

My paents received a call asking about me two nights in row. I do not live with them.  They called again and asked for someone by another first name. What I don't like is that I had recently applied with Cap.one and felt they have a leak.  when I called Capitol One they "were sorry to hear someone called" using their name but were of no interest.  they suggesteed I call the BBB.(better bus. etc)  Thanks Capitol One.

Repeat of all mentioned above-9/22/08 call left on answering machine 5 days after I had applied for a credit card.  Said to call 888-602-2074 to verify info on application - I was suspicious, called cap one customer service who said my application was approved, card was in the mail and there had not been any phone calls from them. Glad I did not call the 888 number, but how did someone know I had just applied for a card?

Just went through the same situation as everyone above. My bro got a call from capital one, then called me. I did call the number back and give my year of birth in order to receive my card. I called Cap One customer service to verify why they called and was on the phone for an hour before I got minimal information that this might be a legitimate number. I have to call a supervisor tomorrow again. I think I'm going to cancel the card and never deal with this shady company again

I received a call from my grandmother telling me that a Capital One recording had just called her house. The recording said to push 1 if it was me, etc. She wrote the number down and called me immediately.
I have never googled a phone # before, and didn't think to do it, so i called the number back. I did not verify whether or not I recently applied for a Capital One card. Instead I hung up. Prior to hanging up, I entered my birth year. My cousin suggested I google the phone number at that point and I came across all of these posts. The whole thing seemed weird to me because 1. I did not apply for a card today and 2. Because I NEVER put my grandmothers phone number down for ANYTHING!!! I have no clue how she could have even been contacted. We don'thave the same last name, I have never lived at her address. I just don't know. Hopefully, nothing bad will come out of this. I will, however, be more aware of scams like these.

I applied for capitol one credit card through capitol's web site. Within 2 weeks after I submitted, someone in my household (not me) got a call that I (by name) had applied and to call back 1-888-602-2074. I never listed any one elses telephone number as mine. I called capitol's fraud protection unit and they did not have any record of sending me a call. Then offered NO advise on what I should do, nor any interest that I got the call. They put me on hold then hung up on me! It has to be an inside job.

This just happened to me as well.  Applied for card last week, got notification by email that my card was being sent.  Then the next day, my mom, who's phone number has not been associated with me for 10 years received a call from this number.

WTF Captial One?

Update, I also emailed Capital One's customer service about this and they say this is a legitimate number, but people can "spoof" the number to show on your caller id:

Thanks for getting in touch with us about the recent phone call you received.

We have researched this telephone number and found that it is indeed a valid Capital One number. We understand your concerns regarding this call. We're aware that fraudulent callers are able to display what looks like a Capital One number in your caller ID in an attempt to gather your personal information.

Just in case you think you might have provided personal information, here are a few things you should do:

- If you are a Capital One customer, call us immediately at 1-800-955-7070 (00+1+804-934-2001 if you are overseas; collect calls will be accepted) to report that account information has been compromised.

- Check your accounts for suspicious activity.

For the future, here are some ways of detecting fraudulent phone calls:

- Be careful of urgent-sounding phone calls that ask for your personal information

- If you get a phone call that you aren?t sure is really from Capital One, or you just think it?s suspicious and do not feel comfortable providing the requested information, just end the call. Then, call us at the number on the back of your credit card. You can also call us at 1-800-955-7070.

If you have other questions or concerns, please feel free to respond to this message.

Thanks for contacting Capital One.

Best regards,

Capital One Services, LLC

My son just received the same call saying that there had been fraudulent activity on MY card.  I recently applied for and received a Capital One card and never included my son's phone number.  Luckily he didn't remember my date of birth so they received no information from him.  Called Capital One, but they act like they have never heard of anything like this, even though it is well documented on the internet.  I canceled my new card because I did not want to take a chance of more phone calls to other relatives and possible fraud.

My dad got a call after I applied for a Capital One card.  It said something about fraudulent activity on my account, although I did not hear the message myself.  After looking at this site, I did not call the number they left, but called Cap One customer service.  The guy said there was no activity on my account and he didn't think there was any reason I should get such a call.  He transferred me to the fraud department.  The fraud guy explained that they have these ways of making sure someone has not stolen your information and applied for a card with it.  Calling family members is a way of cross-checking.  This is only to protect the customer.  Kind of creepy that they can track down your family members, but it is legit.

I AT THE PRESENT TIME DO NOT HAVE A CLUE WHAT THIS IS ABOUT.  I DID NOT CALL THE 1-888-602-2074 NUMBER BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT MIGHT ME A SCAM.

Same as everyone else.  They called my sister's house - I have never lived there, I don't even know her home phone number (we talk on the cell phone), and somehow these bastards tracked down her info to try to get info on me.  I say bastards because that's what they are.  Tracking down my relatives and calling them is invasive and a form of harassment.  If you want to verify my identity, track *me* down, idiots.

Needless to say I'm seriously considering canceling this credit card just because of that call.  I hope you're reading this, Capital One.

My Husband's uncle received the same call.  He lives in NY and I have no connection to him so I have no idea how they got his number.  I don't even know his number and it sure wasn't listed on anything.  If CAPITAL ONE doesn't want to fix this problem, then EVERYONE should boycott this company!  Put them out of business so this can't happen anymore!
