I recently applied for a Capital One credit card.  This evening, I received a telephone message from "Capital One's fraud protection department" instructing me to "call 1-888-602-2074 within 10 days and follow the steps to verify my account information."  I suspected a phishing attempt, so called Capital One on a number posted on their website.  The third level security rep confirmed that no record of a call to me appeared in the customer service log and advised me not to return the call, also that my fledgling account "had not been compromised." The number on my caller ID was 888-618-8905.

Got this call 4 times in one day.  I called Chase, who I actually have a card with, and they had me call Capital One at 800-215-1921, which was actually the recorded referral number I received when I called back the 888-618-8905 number.  Capital One told me that it was a fraud department number, but to call 1-800-215-1921, which is a direct line to their fraud department.  I called and they had no record of me having or applying for a card.  It is a legit number, I just don't know why they called.

Someone asking me to call within 10 days if I am Felix Luciano, which I am not, I received these calls after applying for a capitol one credit card.

I recently applied for a Capitol One credit card which had been approved, but not yet in my possession.  Tonight, a relative (different address, tel. #, and last name) received a recorded call from 8886188905 purporting to represent Capitol One and requesting he verify he was me.  I spoke with several people at Capitol One and they confirmed they did not make the call.  My relative had presence of mind enough to locate this website.  Out of concern re: a possible security lapse involving Capitol One, I've canceled the card.

I got this call and it was an automated call. It stated it was from Capital One and that someone may have used my ID to apply for credit with them. They asked if I was (a name I won't put in here but another person) and if so Press 1, if not Press 2. By then I knew it was not a good call so hung up. Most likely it is a current or future criminal trying to get my ID (or whomever they get to talk to on these calls) and get a credit card, etc. in my name.

Received an automated message on my answering machine from this number claiming to be Capital One Fraud department, and asking me to call 888-602-2074 to verify information.  Although I did apply for a card a few days ago, I did NOT use the phone # they left the message on!  Whether it is legitimate or not there's too much that is odd about this approach.  I have not called back, we'll see whether or not my card comes through (I had already received e-mails that it was approved).

It's a scam. I just get the call on my Cell Phone (literally just bought it last month). They were saying there was Fraud on my Grandmothers Capital One Card..........first she doesn't have one, second she doesn't know my cell phone number, third I never talk to the woman.

If you get this call, just hang up. It's a scam.

Called Capital One.  They told me that this was a scam,  All of their phone Numbers begin with 800 not 888.

receiving multiple calls from this number claiming to be capital one bank, which I don't use. how do I make these calls stop?

I looked up Cap One's number, then called them.  They claim someone did apply for a CC in my name, but they can't help me unless I give them my SSN, which I decline to do.  Don't know what to do next.

Claimed to be Capital One for a name that wasn't me; I don't have Cap One account, and they called my business line, so I strongly suspect scam.  Folks claiming it isn't are probably in on it.

got one too.  If its not fraud, capital one fraud departmet should NOT deny they called, as they did when I called back.  NEVER give info to these things over the phone unless you make the call and know who you are talking to.

It isn't Capital One themselves, but it is an outsourced company they use to verify applications and call for unusual activity on a card.  They called today for my BF after his recent application.  They don't ask for any useful information that would allow fraud and already had all of his info form the application.  this call is not a scam.

Claimed to be Capital One fraud checking on a new application for someone - recordin only, no live person to talk to or phone number to ref back to.  Capital one said no such call.
