They called my cell and didn't realize the voice mail had turned on.  4 minutes of a lady with a southern accent talking about how she likes the beach.

Same thing - It appears as if they are trying to verify the phone number to the name they have on file.  I bet if they verify the name they can then sell the number to someone else. - That is likely why they are only asking for your name and then quickly hanging up. Individual that called was mail and sounded U.S./English.

Got a call from this number asking for me by first name.  I asked who was calling.  She replied "Melissa."  I said, "from?"  She replied, "Beverly Hills." I said, "and this is regarding..." She stated, "I'm looking for ... Is she available?  I need a realtor in Prescott." I told her this was not a realty company.  She said, "Hmm, I must have gotten this confused." She wasn't very polite, either...

I have received 15 calls from the above number between 04/18/12 and 05/03/12. I tried calling the number back, it rings once then I get dead air. I am already registered with the Registry. I would appreciate any help you can give me.

I keep getting calls at least 5-6 times a day for weeks now. When I answer, there is silence. After about 2 minutes, a computerized voice comes on and says "Goodbye".. Tonight was the last straw for me. I just filed a complaint with the Attorney General's office. I live in a state where you can register your phone number to put on a Do not call registry. If they call and violate that registry, they can be fined. They want to play games with me? Heh, Now they can play games with the Attorney General. I have had enough!

Some solutions are at the end of this, but first this apparent shill for telemarketers needs to consider a few things.

Free Enterprise is wonderful. Remembering to "Caveat emptor" is, as well. Which is why we come here and to other sites which tell us the truth, or in the case of this site, give us assorted shards of information; often truthful and illuminating.

The problem with telemarketing (Which, as you correctly state is perpetuated by lobbyists and lawyers.) is that these people perform a service generally only valuable to themselves. They do it at the cost of others. Taking the amount of time they are required to allow the phone to ring -- 15 seconds -- and multiplying it by the millions of calls daily, you soon add up to the lifespan of a human being. In other words, all of our person-hours they waste result in effectively killing a human being, from time to time.

They do this deliberately, inconsiderately, and persistently. It's the down side of free enterprise; the rapacious side; the robber baron side; the side which makes -- in spite of laws intended for consumer protection -- caveat emptor as important today as ever. It may be more important today, given the various ways that technology (such as that which makes telemarketing possible) is used by crooks and unscrupulous business people.

Telemarketers could:
1) Be just as effective, financially
2) Eventually, be more effective
3) Require far fewer lawyers and lobbyists
if they would merely
4) Be polite, considerate, and reasonable.
5) Work diligently to help stop -- and, where appropriate, bring to justice -- the telescammers.

Unfortunately, there are enough fly-by-night outfits, scam artists, and assorted other slimeballs using the telephone to rip people off that the American Express offer of a credit card or the local spa's offer of a free whatever, or a local charity's request for help all get lumped together with those slimy sleazes, and people do stupid things like refusing to answer the phone, then coming here to complain because they keep getting calls from the same number they keep refusing to talk to.

If telemarketers, as a group, would clean up their act, and create an impression that they are as legitimate and honest and scrupulous as any major brick-and-mortar, they would probably find it far more profitable. If we perceive a telemarketing call coming from a major company such as Sears (which uses telemarketing) or HSBC (which uses telemarketing) or other major companies we'd probably be more likely to pay attention.

There already are telemarketers most of us either do business with, anyway. The rest of us have, at least, heard of them. Many brick and mortar companies such as already mentioned also use telemarketing. Maybe to offer a credit card. Maybe (as in the case of Sears) to offer an existing customer some add-on like an extended warranty.

To be sure, we might not like the offers, and we might still prefer not to be bothered.

If they would just dial down the volume -- and change their tone -- we might be more receptive to their message, and less resentful of their intrusion.

Creating an opt-in, rather than opt-out, clause hidden deep in the terms and conditions of Web sites or in contracts or other legal documents would be a start. Forcing a customer to go to greater lengths to avoid being bothered than a non-customer makes no good business sense.

I have stopped doing business with companies because they called . . . and kept calling, after I requested cessation. It's too easy to simply go to a competitor for the same thing. The whole EBR (Existing Business Relationship) rule is kinda backwards. It's as if, by purchasing something from a company, you become their slave.
Either:
A) You must submit to their subsequent intrusion upon your privacy, or
B) You must follow some arcane maze (Which includes reading all of the fine print, in order to find where the pertinent information is buried.) in order to get them to stop.
Both options amount to, "Company wins/consumer loses."

There is one free market enterprise (among others) which  offer solutions to all of this. It's called eVoice. You can get a free phone number to give out whenever you're conducting a transaction which might result in telemarketing. After a six month trial, if you find it valuable, you can maintain that number for a fee. This allows legitimate callers to get in touch with you, and to easily dump the dirt. (Hang-up calls are easily recognized, and don't waste your time.) For some reason, telemarketers generally don't call any of my eVoice numbers.

Another option is that employed by some telemarketers to avoid being caught. They buy (we can buy) prepaid phones, then put the number into their equipment, so it shows in our Caller ID. They could throw the phone away, as soon as they have a number.

We can do the same thing. Get a number, toss the phone, then give it out to possible telemarketers forever. Unfortunately, this only affects the more legitimate callers, but it's a start.

Apparently, you don't spend much time thinking real hard -- something you  you say "They better" do. so, I think you've answered your own last question.

They have a reason for not leaving a message. The law doesn't require them to. They want to talk to a real person. Until they do -- they keep calling. So, those really, super, special people -- the smart ones -- who "...do not answer numbers like this...." will keep getting calls from them. It makes a lot more sense to answer, find out who they are, and put that information here for the rest of us. "Some home blah blah thing" isn't very helpful. "Company X, wanting to sell Y, and located on Z street in Anytown, USA" would be helpful. How do you get useful information? Answer the phone.

What are you doing at home all day -- since they seem to be wrong if they think you're doing nothing? Is it so important you can't answer the phone and spend a minute or two helping the rest of us who come to this site? After all, you DID have time to come to this site hoping SOMEONE ELSE had already done what you can't be bothered to. Or, instead of looking for information so you could do something productive with it, were you just looking for a place where you could while away some of your time and whine?

According to you, "They need to get a Real Job." Do you have any kind of job? Unfortunately, their job is real. Lots of major companies; banks, telecommunication and other utility companies, providers of other services such as carpet cleaning . . . the list goes on and on. All legitimate companies making legitimate offers. You are absolutely right in suggesting some may be involved in scams. That doesn't mean they all are. And, sadly, even the people running scams have a "Real Job." It's called "scam artist." It's their job, and many do it very well, and very profitably.

Until you pick up, talk to them for a few minutes (Acting Interested, and prepared with phony information to give them.), and tell us what you learn, there's no way for us to know if it is a scam or if your brain has a scum covering it, from disuse.

The reason nothing is done is that the telemarketing industry has more than a few highly paid lobbyist and lawyers, who argue that the industry is performing a valuable public service to those people who are not otherwise able to get out (home-bound and the like), and therefore could not avail themselves of the services being offered, not having the opportunity to hear about them.  Its the FREE MARKET ENTERPRISE System in all it's glory!  Surely you would not want to stifle or other impede that, would you?

I keep getting calls from this number also and do not answer numbers like this and they do not leave a message. I have already registered with the FTC. This needs to be stopped. They need to get a Real Job. If they think we sit at home doing nothing all day, then what is their excuse for trying to do Nothng themselves but try and scam people so they can try and get rich from doing what they are doing? Who is the stupid one here now? They better think real hard if they keep this up.

Answered it and they asked for me.  I told them that she was sleeping and could I take a message.  The woman on the other end said that there was no call back number so she would have to try again.  I told them good luck cause she works strange hours and hung up.  Wonder if they will try it again.

Recieved calls from this number. Added a 1 in front of it and called. Rang once and shut down. Sure wished I could get my hands on whoever or whatever is making these time wasting calls. Was in shower this time. Like to see someone invent an electronic feed back that sends a signal back to the caller and destroys his/her computer.
