I received the letter asking for a death certificate for my Mom.  I called their Customer Service number 1-800-732-9194 from their website and the representative Jack did confirm it is a valid letter from BOA.  He was able to verify the Unit name that was on the letter and provide the PO BOX number El Paso and also their fax number.

I received the same email. I am 23 years old, had to quite my job to move countries to handle my late mothers estate. I'm from New Zealand so I really don't know the whole deal with SSN and such, but I called and gave in the information requested. It sounded dodgey as soon as I gave the information so now I am on the phone on hold with Social Security. Please if anyone has any other information on how to deal with fraudulent matters of deceased persons please respond!

Letter stated PO Box 982238, El Paso, TX 79998-2238. Phone number 1.866.416.7089

I received the same letter asking for a death certificate.  The stationary was copied from a Bank of America sheet.  The scam artist used it to type the letter they want you to believe is authentic to get personal information for their benefit.

Report the fraud to the bank and the government asap!

I received a letter purportedly from Bank of America, P.O Box 100298 Columbia SC 29202 asking for copies of my government ID and notarized letter of service request -  I sent the documents and am now concerned that this was an ID scam - has anyone received similar requests (I contacted abuse@bankofamerica.com  but have not received a reply)

I just received a letter from "BOA" that looks like I'm the one that is dead! First, I don't have any accounts with BOA or it's affiliates, second, I'm alive and not dead. This is how I know this is FRAUD! I will contact BOA and forward this letter to it's fraud department.

I received the same letter that Dave received? Dave who posted on April 18, and it appears that many people got that same letter. I smelled a rat right away based on many observations on letter. Not to mention the fact that I had taken care of my mother's things months and months ago. I hope people are smart enough to look these things up and to really question before they go sending off documents to just anybody. The scary thing is that my dad would have sent him whatever they asked for had I not entered septic this letter and opened it myself.

received a  letter and phone call regarding my husbands death. Letter stated they did not need more information. It states that it is Bank Of America Enterprise Estate Unit. I looked it up and they are in Delaware.
I am turning the letter over to the local branch of BOA and then my attorney

Your Estate Attorney or Probate attorney should be handling that. It is unlikely they would have you in the Enterprise Estate  Unit without you prompting the call.

I also work for a probate attorney and agree with you -- unfortunately larger banks like Bank of America make it difficult for families processing their loved one's assets after a death because it (the bank) is so large their left hand does not know what their right hand is doing. It is not fraudulent, its just part of their tangled mess.  My suggestion: bank with a smaller, community bank.

I really appreciate these posts!  I wrote BOA that I was Trustee for my mom's estate, and received this "fraudulent looking" letter back. Unfortunately, I did send her death cert as requested, but never heard back.  I called another "customer service" number who requested the same information, and they were supposed to send me a packet to close her account, but of course haven't heard anything from them . geeeeez I've had to deal with 10 different banks/companies, and haven't had a good experience yet.  Funny when they blame "the government".

I received the same letter - my mother just passed.  The address they have on record for her is not the one bank of america has, nor is it the one the nursing home had, nor anyone she had dealings with.   It is the address the FLORIST had that delivered the flowers!  This is where this fake-looking BOA letter was sent. Didn't notice this at first.  Am so glad I checked here.  *#% degenerate thieves never quit do they?

Yesterday received the same letter the same info as all the above. A case number is what gave it away if was a FRAUD, and no color on the paper work which Bank of America uses in all their documentation. I will print all the 800notes and take them to the bank Monday morning.

This is incredible, my mother passed away just two weeks ago,  after having to deal with her death and the government etc, now this.

This information must have been obtained from the hospital, funeral home or cemetery, or even the US government.

Goof luck to all of you and always search the phone numbers.

Received what's probably the same letter that many of you have received from BoA requesting a death certificate for my Mom (who passed away 6 years ago) . . it looked suspicious, like a photo copy. We had closed everything after she died so getting this letter 6 years later seemed very odd.
Decided to Google the phone # before I called and it looks like my instincts were right . .it's a big ole SCAM  . .  thanks for all your posts!

Also received 3 letters for my  grandparents & mother, who each passed in 2006, 2007 & 2010. The letter re: my grandpa thanked me for providing info about him, whereas for grandma & mom they stated they were informed that they'd passed away. Each letter had a different case #. I knew it was bull because my mother handled all grandmother's affairs after her passing & I handled mom & granddad after their passing. I was informed that no info was needed for my grandpa but they wanted death certificates for grandma & mom. When I asked who informed them, I was told notification came because of returned mail. Two of the letters stated they'd try to handle each case by a certain date, so I told the rep I wouldn't act on anything until/if I ever heard back from them. Still not sure this is a scam but whatever I'm not providing them with any information.

I am an attorney who specializes in probate matters. BOA has a central notification department to gather information of decedent's so they can deliver it to all of their various departments. I contacted them directly at 1-877-767-9383. Their address is  "Enterprise Estate Unit" PO Box 982263, El Paso, TX 79998-2263. It is not fraudulent.

I actually contacted BOA online under online account logged in, with their customer rep. his name was Sid and he directly gave me these phone numbers to call about the account of someone who passed. I did call the number and the man answered  told me also to fax or send a copy of a death certif. to a number or address he gave me. I asked exactly what I was supposed to be doing, such as closing the account as there is no local branch near where I am, so the account is still open and has been put on hold, and he said after faxing or mailing a copy of the death certificate someone from the unit would be contacting me as to the next steps to take. I was also worried and searched the number and address and found this post. Now I don't know what I should do -send it or not?

I got this same letter in regards to my mom's death. It was dated the same day the medical office signed off on her death certificate. I dragged my feet but eventually called the number. They said to send a copy of the death certificate. I again dragged my feet and this morning while I had some time I was going to get this out in the mail but decided to google Enterprise Estate Unit and found your post. Personally I never doubted the legitimacy of the letter until reading your post. It has been over a month since I spoke to someone at the number I called and you would think that since they still hadn't received a copy of the death certificate they would have called back but they haven't. I'm going to call BOA and see what they say.

Just received the same letter Dated AUGUST 10 2012. Location from the B O A  P.O.Box 982263  El Paso, Texas 79998-2263     I called the number 1-888-689-4466 on the letter, after a 10 minute wait a man that answered said he was from the branch were we do business. He also knew there was another name on the account and what it was. He said they need to close out the deceased information to help stop fraud and to close out all her estate accounts. He wanted me to fax didn't need the original death certificate if in fact she did die. So I called the bank from the local number that I have and spoke to a rep went through all the info I got from the mail and the phone call and was assured  that it is in fact a scam of some sort. My end was reported on August 21, 2012.

Received a call from the "Bank of America Enterprise Estate Unit" regarding my husbands death and a supposed case file.  They requested a death certificate and a "copy of the will indicating you are in charge of your late husband's affairs."  Since this had all been handled through proper channels I refused.  When I had my attn. call them they refused to give any information but did indeed say they were from BOA.  The latest thing I have received is a letter saying that they have received information from a "third party vendor" that my son is dead.  He is not.  I believe this comes under the harassment category.  Oh, and by the way, there was no mention of "this call is being recorded" which means no quality assurance.  I will deal with this in person at my local BOA and see what they say...otherwise it's another call to the attn.  Enough.

I cannot make out if this is fraudulent or not. But I received a letter from the P.O. Box 982236 El Paso, TX 79998-2236 about recent credit card application I did at BOA.

The number I call for BOA in regards to my credit card status keeps saying my application is under review, but then I get this letter that seems so fake? They even attached a brochure for me to read (looks like its from 1990) and gave about a million different addresses to 'write to' if I have questions.

Wish I could tell if this was real or fake!?

Credit card services on BOA website is to P.O. Box 982234 not 982236 that this return address is from.
