Do you have a copy of the contract? Not the copy they emailed to you to confirm the appointment etc. but a copy you made at the time of signing. Just curious, because I didn't make a copy and only have what was emailed back to me. I find it hard to believe it said seventy five hundred dollar cancellation.

This is NOT a legit government office. I've had several voicemails left by these crooks, after lying to my receptionist to get my name and extension. They will try to make you think they are a government tax office in order to get a return call. They actually just want to charge you insane fees to audit your sales taxes. And folks, if your taxes need to be audited, I suggested you find a legitimate LOCAL accounting firm. Do not give these shady agencies one dime.

All, I started my own sales tax consulting firm in February 2011. It is unfortunate that other "consulting" companies are so pushy and disrespectful. There are a few good companies out there, like mine, that are here to assist when you feel there is a need. All of my clients have been referred to me by others. I don't like being hounded for meetings or stalked either. That is why I take the approach that if someone needs help, I hope my network of professionals will lead their client to me. I can say I've been quite successful in this approach.
I couldn't believe I read the contingent fees were 50%! I suspect most of that fee is to cover overhead and salaries. With Palmer Tax Consulting, I have minimal to no overhead. I have over 23 years of sales/use tax and unclaimed property experience. I pride myself on conducting an initial meeting and an initial review free of charge. If after looking at 1 year's worth of AP data and invoices I identify potential refunds that exceed potential liabilities, it is then, and only then will I have the discussion about performing a full blown review to capture all overpayments of sales/use tax, prepare the refund claim, file it and defend it should it be audited. In addition, I will provide a specific analysis of why overpayments were being made and how the errors can be eliminated going forward. I don't treat companies as an annuity where I count on them to continue to make mistakes so I can file a refund claim in another 3 years. This is the difference between a "consultant" and a trusted business advisor.
I can really empathize with the harassment all of you feel. This behavior makes my services "skeptical" to companies who have been burned in the past. Again, there are a few of us out here whose main goal is to recover overpaid tax for you and assist you in preventing the errors in the future....at a reasonable fee...like 25%.

This guy Scott Reguett, from the Salt Group (on one side of his card) and US Tax Recovery Partners on the other side of the card, came to our business to solicit us for sales tax recovery. I was not in the office but my wife was. He was extremely pushy about getting an appointment and the guy would not let up. So my wife finally agreed and he made her sign for the appointment. What she actually signed was an agreement that said if you don't use their service they charge you $7500 and now they are trying to force us to pay $7500. I would never use The Salt Group or US Tax Recovery Partners. Even if their company is legit, if this is the type of practices they use to get business imagine what they would do to earn their commission. They are a scam.
Denny 2014-02-26 15:35:55 Unknown
SALT rises again, continual harrassing calls, even to the point they say they have meetings with our staff. No phone number, Blocked caller ID. will be reporting to local authorities if they do not cease.
stacy 2014-01-29 18:49:10 Unknown
They're trying to bill us for $7500. also. Do you have a copy of the contract? Or do you just have the scanned copy they email to you?
Angela 2013-08-08 14:37:41 Unknown
What was the result? We are in a similar situation and they are trying to charge us 7500 because of the "contract" we signed.
Angela 2013-08-08 14:35:52 Unknown
Do NOT do business with these guys. Their practices are NOT up to par. They promise incentives but in the end they make you pay for everything up front. The State can take months maybe even a year to respond and might REGECT the claim all together. The way they do business is crazy and they do bully by calling. I was tricked into signing the contract thinking it was a real auditor wanting to come in for an audit. Yes It was my fault for not reading the fine print so I suggest ALWAYS read the fine print.

If you meet with a salesman of this company get a copy of the contract AND READ IT before you sign it.

I'm an attorney in Florida and a client of mine received a call from this company, The State and Local Tax Group aka The SALT Group. I was told that the sales person gave the false impression that they were from a governmental agency entitled to review/audit the firm's records. The local representative was professional enough to admit the company was really a private company looking to do a review sales tax audit. My client politely asked them to leave.
This is a very shady business practice.

Got a call today from a 210 area code telling me to call back at (855) 896-8822x321 stating "just got a quick question for you..." He did at least say he was from SALT. I have had others from the 210 area code that did not ID the company and that they "needed to set up an appointment time with me." Sure.
I did have one of their reps come here a couple of years ago. He seemed OK, but then he told me the telemarketers get paid when they setup a rep appointment, the reps get paid when they set up an audit date, the auditor gets paid when he/she finds money to be refunded to the company being audited. There are legitimate commission jobs but this sounds a bit like a pyramid.

P.S.- Their standard fee is 50% of the tax rebate- well worth it if you hadn't of even known about it. But always haggle and barter about the numbers. 40% is the lowest I've seen them go. But sometimes any business is better none. Demand 30% !!! F THE MAN !!!
forgotten go getter 2012-08-02 23:04:57 Unknown
I used to work for the SALT group- which stands for State and Local Tax Group. The name might confuse you, but it's reallly no scam or BS. Dont be afraid to have an original ol' meet and greet to discuss business on how to increase your bottom line; unless you are not that kind of profit-buildind drivin person for your company. I, basically set appt's for our tax experts ( previously state auditors) to come in briefly & for free to explain certain tax exemptions for manufacturers that their own accountants/bookkeepers are not aware/pursuing. ( about 90%!!!) And they only work on a contingency basis; so if they dont get u that refund, they aint gettn paid. So it really is worth it, dont be afraid to answer your phone and decifer real business. P.S. I dont work there anymore because our call center is f****d up to its lowest employees, us appt setters making a certain amount of appts a week, or our weekly hour goes min wage, which is messed up if you've been there for YEARS. But the meet with the Controller is worth the 10-15 minutes. Just thought I'd speak the truth on it. Great service for manufacturers, but slave drivers to the "real working class"

I have received a call yesterday, 7/16/12 left a message saying, "this is Chris from over at the state and local tax group, please return my call at 855-896-8822 x 311 as soon as possible." When I tried to call the number back, all I got was a beep, beep, beep like it was an error.
Then today, I got a message from a Landon who gave me the same spill and he was at x 323.
Sarge 2012-02-16 20:57:42 Unknown
Mike,
Could you be a little more patronizing? These people from the SALT Group don't understand or refuse to comply when asked to stop calling. They just look for a different name in the same business and try to weasel their way in through a different route. Why don't you give them your telphone number? Perhaps you can schedule a meeting with them too since you're an expert on wasting time.

I get calls from the State and Local Tax Group two or three times each month. Luckily I usually find they called because there was a message on my voice-mail. I delete each one. Occasionally they will catch me at my desk. I've explained every time that I'm not interested; we have an internal audit department that reviews our sales tax payments annually. I normally have to tell them no three times and then hang up the phone while they are still trying to convince me to let them come in. They're persistent.

This is a company that will try to meet with you to get your business for their service of going over your company purchases and utilities and see where you could have avoided paying taxes and possibly get refunds from your state... They do charge for this service. They are located in Texas but travel to any state. They are not your local states local tax group... Their voicemails are deceiving.

I generally like to take the high road in response to inquiries like the one that I received from Lisa at X310. A couple of posters on this board highly suggest taking the high road and I agree with them to a point...but there were signs to indicate that this might not be they type of company or individual that I would like to deal with.
It is common curtesy to announce your full name when making solicitations, and announce the purpose of the call in some detail. Lisa did not leave a last name, nor did she leave me with much detail as to the purpose of her call...but there was a veiled reference that inferred that she might be with a branch of our state government.
So with my suspicions raised with two strikes against her, I did return the call. The automated attendant did not answer the phone with a company name and I could only enter the extension number...that was strike three. I entered the extension number that Lisa gave me, and she swong and missed on that one too...strike four. That extension voice mail did give the company name, but it said that there was nobody available to help me and told me to leave a message. Because that was strike four, I did not leave a message. Lias or somebody else can try me at some other time and I will take the call if available. Then I will tell them that I only deal with local reputable firms that conduct business in a professional manner.

These people keep calling even though our firm is registered on the national do not call list.
Finally, I made an appointment with them at a factious location. They wasted my time, now I will waste their time.

Got a call from Stephanie - 888-755-3880 Ext 323. She did not know who she was calling and went through the receptionist to get to my name and extension. I did not recognize the number, so I let it roll to my voice mail. Based on all the comments I see here - I will not be returning the call.

I have been off on medical leave my boss set up an appointment, all she told her was it was to save us on our taxes so she figured why not. She set up the meeting so I could be there. When Mike called to confirm the meeting I asked what the name of the company was and he said The Salt Group and I canceled the meeting, told him we sell a food product so we do not charge tax and we are tax exempt so we don't pay taxes on anything. He was pushy and so were the 2 sales men that came in the past. Oh, yes we met with them twice already because when one of my bosses get the call all they hear is they are going to save us money on taxes and they think our property and school taxes. We keep telling them we are not interested and they continue to call. I asked to be taken off the list - never happens. Just got another call (that's 2 times today) from Vicki call 888-755-3880 ext 302, when I asked her what it was concerning and she said our state & local taxes so I asked her if it was The Salt Group, she hesitated and said yes, she said Mike said I wanted to reschedule in 6 months, now the meeting was set for 11/9 and today is 11/17... 1st that is only 1 week later and 2nd I told them to take us off their list. They are relentless.

I receive calls from this place at least several times a month. I think when they only identify themseives as the "State & Local Tax Group", some may take that as being from a government agency and return the call. These types of calls are getting bad. I monitor all calls to my business phone. Many have the caller ID blocked, i.e. nothing appears on the screen. There are a ton of these services looking to review every aspect of your business taxes.

@ Mike, When a consulting or recruiting firm identifies itself and their objective in calling me, and it's a bona fide objective, I do give the caller the courtesy of a response. This is a blind solicitation, often to non-tax practitioners who don't handle sales and use tax and are not qualified to speak to the topic at hand. Personally I do not consider this an ethical means of soliciting business among tax professionals. People return these calls expecting a prospect, perhaps a state agency in need of something, or even a co-worker from a remote office. That's what we all do all day--communicate on behalf of our employer. A blind solicitation interferes with such a process, and this organization is apparently not professional enough to get it. But hey...if you have time on your hands, I'll be glad to drop your business card off at the bulletin board down at Home Depot. What are you up for? Siding? Roofing? Driveway sealer? si habla espanol?

Yep...this group calls all the time. Sales/use tax consulting. I avoid them because their opening line usually runs like this: "We can help you with new sales tax incentives in Xxx County." Sales and use tax in Georgia is handled at the state level, not the county level. Duh! The only difference over the years is now they don't identify their firm. A reputable tax consulting firm wants you to know who they are. Bad cop...no donut.

Received a call today from Andrew Cramer at ext 320. I had asked for this call to be put through to my voice mail. After listening to the message, I realized we had no use for this caller and whatever he is trying to sell. Andrew did not have the courtesy to explain the reason for his call, but he did request that I call him back. Not going to happen.

I got a call today, the id on my phone system shows no caller Id. the caller asked for out CPA by name (you can get this from their voice mail anytime). I put the call thru, and the CPA did not answer. he came back to swith board and wanted me to locate or page her. I walked into her office and she said it
did not show a phone # just no caller id on the extension so she did not answer.
I was asked to take a number or give him voice mail. He said his name was Ken and gave the # above with ext 303 (Looks to be the same as Mary"s) once I got the phone # I goggled it also. our CPA
is going to let him him know we are not interested and to put this company on the "do not call list".
I also keep a list of "Junk calls" that I have compiled and when the numbers appear, I dump them in
general voice mail for the company and go on to a real phone call....list get bigger each day.
