I work for a legitimate dent collections agency and they are probably using a system called Lexus Nexis/Accurint.
BEWARE: these people work on commissions and have gotten very good at locating people. TAKE YOUR FACEBOOK and any other social media websites off the public settings. All they have to do is look at your Facebook or LinkedIn profile and use their system to punch in names of people they can tell are friends and family of yours on FB. They will use LinkedIn as well to get work info and call you at work! So just something to be careful of...the current popular scam goes something like this. They have documents to bring you(ask to verify addy) then tell you there's charges filed against you and you have to call the "firm" that's handling their case. Then when you call they will tell you that you are being pursued for fraud/breech of contract(or something similar) and want you to pay a settlement to keep it out court. But they dont have any paperwork for you and nobody takes you to court over an old debt. You can't get money from people who don't have any!

get calls saying to call 1-888-760-1382. they call from 1-888-760-1382 or from 213-261-0300 which are numbers for the same CMRE company. they keep leaving message asking for someone named Tony Jefferson. tried calling the 888 number but was on hold for 40 minutes before giving up. tried calling the 213 number and went straight through to a live person. told them that Tony Jefferson is not at my number, that don't know Tony Jefferson, and to not call my number again. hopefully that puts an end to these stupid calls.

These chodes seem to call me every time I'm getting sessy  with a lady friend. They say I owe them money to some medical office or some doctor, but I know that is bunk. I go to the free clinic to get my all my STD treatments so I know I don't owe nobody no money for nothing! . I told her that and then tried to get a hook up with her but she acted all prissy and stuff. Must be a lez.

I got an automated voicemail message, too, offering debt settlement. I was curious since I don't know of any outstanding bills. When I called the 888 number, the person was asking me my social security number, my date of birth, my address to verify that it was me..Because I won't divulge the info, I told him to just send me the bill since apparently whoever I owe should know my address, right? He insisted under federal law he cannot give me information on my "supposed" debt. and debtor unless I give him all my personal information..

Terrible people.  I don't know Nora Gandolfo!  Never heard of Nora.  But they keep calling, must have been over 6 months of regular calls.  I've filed complaints, I've asked them to remove me from the list.  They are awful!!!!  Is this an internet scam?  I feel totally violated and intruded on.  Why should I be victimized by someone else's bills?  They just don't stop!!!

Its very easy to get these people to stop calling you. Go online and print out a cease and desist letter. Get the companies fax number fax it over, make sure have the sent paper. Then certify letter it to them. By law 3rd party collection agencies cannot call once they receive a cease and desist letter. Also, file a complaint with the FTC. I worked for a debt negotiations company and had to send out letters and file complaints all the time with 3rd party collection agencies.

Watch out!  I too received calls regarding a "medical debt".  I've only been to the doctor a couple times in the past 10 years, but called the number just in case.  I asked the woman on the other end of the line why I had not received anything in writing regarding this alleged debt, she claimed they had sent me something (which they hadn't).  I then asked her how much this debt was and who was the original creditor etc.  She said she couldn't tell me that unless I told her my current address, birthdate and the last four digits of my social security #.  I refused and requested that they mail the debt notice to my address.  She said, "well what's your address?", and I told her that she should have it in her computer and hung up. I followed up by checking my credit report and there are no debt collections listed.  I believe these people are SCAMMERS.  Do not give them any personal information!  Report them!

So tired of these guys, the call daily, sometimes twice a day for someone I've never heard of. Most times it is a recording that says if you are not this person to hang up. Once I got a live person and they said sorry, they will remove my number from their list but I still get daily calls...Where should we report this to?

I've stopped answering this number months ago, and they continue to call me at least twice a day now...

Last time I answered was in June. A southern-sounding lady by name of "Maybelle" stated this is a call to collect a debt and any information collected would be used to collect upon said debt. I said fine. She asked if I am [my first name and maiden name], which I said yes. Then she told me I owed over $10k to CMRE, a representative of "General Motors Financial and Credit Services" for a debt incurred in 1995 and that they are allowed to offer a settlement for a total sum of $2500 and .."it is the only offer we will make before this debt is sent to court for the full amount."

I thought, oh really? *eg* If this were the case... hmmm.....

So I asked her for the ORIGINAL account number, the original debtor name, and if she would email me a photocopy of the original SIGNED debt agreement. She responded that information should be on my credit report and that she needed to verify my information. I said fine. Then she asked for my current full name and address. o.0 * hu?

I told her to read off the information she has and I would verify if it is correct. She got snooty and said I had to TELL her to verify. I said, uh, no - then asked her if she knew the meaning to the word, "VERIFY" and the context of which she used it. She got more snooty, then demanded I tell her my current name and address. I responded with, "Well, if you are legitimately who you say you are, you already have that information as you are calling me on a cell phone that didn't even exist in the 1990's which is assigned a number that obviously wasn't generated then. So YOU tell ME what my full name and address are."

For a few moments, there was silence.

So I pushed the issue further by saying, "IF this debt is indeed legitimate, then YOU are to provide me with the information I requested, in writing, to my current address which I will confirm IF you tell me the right address. After all, yes, that information IS on my credit report - of which I am looking at right now for I do request my federally granted free credit report once a year and surprise, it is that time of year for me - upon which I do not see your firm, or General Motors anything." (of whom I never I had a debt with in my lifetime)

She then tried to speak when I cut her off with, "And to further the investigation into the matter of my owing your firm, I was never sent a physical notice of this debt by your firm, which is required by law for collections. So, "Maybelle", I so humbly request your employee number, and a transfer of this call to your immediate supervisor. Oh, I should inform you that yes, this call has been recorded for legal purposes to protect my identity as well as for reporting to the FCC - an act of which I am morally obligated to tell you for if you indeed work for a legitimate collection agency but are calling people fraudulently in hopes of collecting on false or old records than you will be -"

She hung up before I could finish. ^.^

Did I incur a debt in 1995 to anyone in that amount? Geez.... no.... I was barely able to feed my children at the time let alone get a loan or any sort of balance to that amount! Several years after that, yes - but not in 1995! I was on my second marriage in 1995 and hadn't used my maiden name in over 6 years. It had been 17 years since the alleged debt was incurred and it wouldn't be on my credit report anyway. Now, if it had been sold & bought by these debt collection firms several times - it would show up as a NEW debt and have stayed on my credit report.

But honestly, the largest of anything ever on my credit report was about $5,000 for a used car I bought back in 1996, which was paid off in full by 1999.

~~~
I had worked in mortgage/foreclosure collections a looong time ago and have known of some people who work in legitimate collection agencies to try and collect on old/fake debts from people who do/did have legitimate debt. Mixing a bit of truth into a scam is dangerous, and there ARE people who do work for these firms that exploit consumer fears.
Your best defense against anything like this is to CHECK YOUR CREDIT REPORT EVERY YEAR! Or more frequently if you wish.
Know your rights, and by all means, report on these actions.
The cell phone "Maybelle" called wasn't activated until 2010 when I bought the phone for my son, who decided to get his own phone so gave it back to me. It isn't even under my name, the caller ID still reads my son's name!
go figure....
Called me first time today with a computer voice reporting they are CMRE (best guess - said so fast I can't be sure, and their client is Emergency Service Medical GROU and are trying to collect an unpaid debt.  Left the message on my answering machine that by continuing to listen to their message I am verifying my name is "xxx" and to call them back at this number and and refer to reference number "xxx."  I called them back and some woman answers, she's typing as fast as she can, insisting I verify my name and DOB.  I refused to verify anything, told her I have no debts, have proof of all bills being paid and checks satisfactorily cashed.  I insisted she verify who SHE was and that she is legitimate and if I find they aren't I'll see them in court...the line went dead.  Pretty well proof that these people are scammers.
Called me giving a reference number to refer to when calling back, gave me this phone number, saying they were calling on behalf of Emergency Service Medical GROU for a debt owed.  I make sure I have no debts and have proof of payment for all medical services and have received no bills from anyone. They wanted me to verify my name and date of birth.  I told her I refused to verify anything and I wanted to know who THEY were.  She said they are CMRU or CMRE, said so fast I couldn't make it out for sure) and asked me to verify name and DOB.  I told her it seems to me this was a scam call and if they can't prove to me who they are and their legitimacy, I'd see them in a court of law...the line was disconnected.  Proves to me they're scammers and nothing to worry about.
