Answered the phone from this number and it was a sales call on behalf on DirecTV telling me that they wanted to upgrade my equipment to a NEW HD receiver. I needed to commit to a 2yr contract. I said no, I was happy with my current HD setup. Salesman proceeded to tell me that the HD receiver I have now is obsolete and I was only capable of getting 10 of the 72 channels on offer. I needed a new receiver for the rest and could only get one for the 2yr commitment. I said I would buy one retail before I would commit. He said that DirecTV would not allow me to use the access card or issue me a new one without a 2yr commitment. When I  said I was going to call DirecTV to verify, he hung up on me in mid sentence.

I have called DirecTV directly and they swear that none of this is true, it is an outsourced marketing company looking to get sales for new commitments.

My new tactic (besides seeing this number on my caller ID and not answering the call) is to pick up the phone and blow a very loud whistle into it. Maybe after their eardrums are shattered a few times, they'll stop calling. If not, I'm going to call DirecTV and tell them I'll cancel and switch to DISH if it doesn't stop. I'm no longer under contract. I already told them I was planning to switch if they didn't lower my monthly charge ... and they did!

Received two calls today while home sick from 888-763-7772, one around 10AM and the other at 5PM.  They obviously target stay at home, unsuspecting folks that can't say no to telemarketers.  They want to get people on the phone to pressure a sale. They don't leave messages, so my guess is they aren't from DirecTV who always leaves a message.

Word to the wise: if you want new equipment from your satellite provider, wait until your contract/agreement is up or nearly complete, then call and tell them you want to cancel your service and switch to the other guys to get a better price & new equipment.  They're retention department will promptly upgrade your equipment and probably even get you a better monthly price.  Good luck

I received two calls from this number, but didn't answer either. Two days later  I got an email from DirecTV saying I may need an upgrade to my dish. I called back and they determined I do not need the upgrade. Seems pretty legit to me.

I received this call from DirecTV to upgrade my existing equipment at no charge.  I verified that they had my address and my current programming level so that I knew it was really DirecTV.  I scheduled an appointment to upgrade the equipment and if anything is amiss, I'll let you all know.

I rev'c a call AND an upgrade from DirecTV.  Nothing to sign up for, were not pushy, got a confirmation letter in the mail with appt time and were actually on time! Have had DirecTV for 7 yrs with never a late pmt or any trouble and am satisfied. I didn't have to do anything. This information IS on their website and if you call 1800-531-5000 for them, they CAN tell you about it if you get a technical support person to talk to.

Outside agency hired by Direct TV to try and hook you into accepting a free upgrade. Only thing is, this "FREE" upgrade comes with a hidden two year agreement, so if you take this offer and decide you do not want Direct TV, for whatever reason, for two more full years, you will then have a collection agency contacting you to pay the early disconnect penalty. So, go ahead and take the call if you want to be locked in by this sales company hired by your TV service provider. I for one just called Direct TV and told them if they EVER have an outside sales company call me again for anything, I will cancel them and move to Dish Network. Now, some unscrupulous sales sweat shop has my account information courtesy of Direct TV.  THANKS, I needed one more unethical sales company to have info about me out there. No wonder thieves have such an easy time stealing information and using it for their own ends. Who knows what kind of security this sales company has to "PROTECT" my information???????

I get phone calls from 888-763-7772 at least 2 times a day including weekends.  There is no caller ID & no one ever leaves a message. After 2 weeks, I checked to see who is calling.  It is Direct TV.  I have been a customer for over 3 yrs.  If they have business to do with me, the least they can do is identify who is calling & leave a messages as to what they want. Do we also need a "do not call" list for those you do business with? This is absolutely absurd & invasive when you have a hard time getting to the phone.  It is more than annoying when you can fall & injury yourself trying to get to the phone just for a hang up! Maybe they are just too embarrassed to say why they are calling??? MAKE THEM STOP! At my age when the phone rings, it means someone is ill or died!  I do not need this type of marketing if that is what it is.  I will go back to Cable or Dish before I will put up with this harrassment.

I get calls from this #888-763-7772 2x's everyday including weekends.  It is hard to get to the phone; I have tracked the calls since no one leaves a message which really irritates me.  There is no ID.  I called the # & indeed it is Direct TV.  This alone will make me transfer to "Dish"! No wonder they charge so much...using all those people to make calls 2x's a day to see who they could snare one into spending more money than they have. If I fracture another bone tring to get to a ringing phone with tactics like this I will sue them! If Direct TV has anything more to offer, use the MAIL! I have had Direct TV for over 3 yrs, always paid my bill on time.  STOP CALLING WITH NO ID & JUST HANGING UP! These insensitive mental midgets have no idea what difficulty an old disabled person has in getting to the phone! They can take their marketing practices & stick it where the sun don't shine!

Got a call.  It was Directv regarding FREEEEEEEE UPGRADE!  It is BS.  Turns out that it is a scam by non other than DIRECTV.  Buyer beware!  Here is the fine print that they don't mention until after you sign up.  The upgrade to a new receiver/equipment is free but it comes with a hidden catch.  YOU AREN'T TOLD THAT THE FREE UPGRADE REQUIRES A TWO YEAR CONTRACT.  YOU'LL FIND OUT AFTER.  Pretty sneaky.  Absolutely no need for new equipment but Direct tv will automatically cut your service or at least that was the threat unless you upgrade.  With tactics like that, you might as well go with another service.  You'll still wind up with a contract but at least you'll know about it.

I received the same as others called about the up-grade.  I asked if this same information was available on Direct TV's website.  The caller said the offer was only good at this time and it was not on the website.  Also told me the offer was only being made to "loyal customers in good standing".  I said "no thanks" and hung up.  It sounded like a scam from the very beginning and wasn't even very professional sounding.

Also, in addition to the free upgrade to the MPEG4 HD DVR I am keeping the older HD DVR. It just won't get the newer HD channels and they may choose to change the older dozen HD channels to MPEG4 some time in the future but it will work fine and receive the standard definition.

No idea what people are talking about when they say "threats" or whatever.  I've never received bogus information from them.  However, I suppose it is possible that someone trying to drum up sales for their installation business might call and say anything since DirecTV like the cable companies contract out the installation.  But I can't imagine someone who did this would remain an installer very long.

This is definitely DirecTV and legit.  They handled my free upgrade just fine.  I have an older HD unit and a newer one. I had to Google this number because the phone message garbled the last digit.  Took a guess and dialed it and got DirecTV.  This is the upgrade number they give to people that already have an HD receiver but it's an older model.

In Sept. 2007 they added new satellites for more HD channels.  All HD channels added are encoded with MPEG-4 so no older units can get the signal.  Older HD and standard definition units use MPEG-2 which is the same encoding as a standard DVD.  MPEG-4 gives a better picture with half the bandwidth.  Without this they would double the number of satellites in orbit for the same number of channels.

Someone called me using this number to say "Direct TV is being investigated by the FCC for FRAUD using predatory marketing practices and telling customers subscribed to HD they are required to upgrade to mpeg4 and if they have an old mpeg2 DVR, and continue to use the mpeg2 DVR they will be subject to legal action from DirecTV."  i of course told them to go f*** themselves.

I got a call today from 888-763-7772 talking about their new HD channels and my current HD channels will soon be gone, but they can upgrade my equipment for free.  I called them and the lady said she has no idea what I'm talking about.  She said she has had other calls about the same thing and she can't offer me anything for free.  Darn them to H*
