It didn't say who, left a message with a case number, google with this number and found this page.

Call AMX right away (number on my card) and found out someone used my card online at Home Depot for over $2000.

If you get this a message from this number, call AMX quick!!!!!!!!

Ever think that MAYBE they are doing this for your own good, and are vague because in a lot of instances, the person calling trying to get the card to work is fraud and trying to fish for info? I 100% appreciate these kinds of services... you're complaining because you have been on the phone for 10 mins and your credit card company wants to verify your identity to make sure it's you and not someone else trying to misuse your info? Think of the hours spent by Amex trying to ensure you are protected. Having an issue with a conference call and getting ahold of your bank... how is that relelvant? Everyone is human and there could have been a system issue.

That's incorrect.... I work for this dept. 8888005234 is 100% legitimate. It even says on the voicemail left if you feel more comfortable to call the # on the back of your card.

The reason this dept calls is because of fraudulent applications and activity... so clearly they were trying to get ahold of you to tell you an acct was opened in your name, trying to HELP you, not to invade your privacy. Phone numbers are public record.

Actually that is a valid #, it's not a scam at all. The message does state that if you feel more comfortable you can call the # on the back of your card. They helped me out a lot w/identity theft information.

The number is a LEGIT Amex fraud line number.  I got a call from this number today about fraudulent use of my card.  I told them I would have to call them back because I do not trust anybody that just calls me up asking for any time of info.  I then proceeded to call the number on the back of my card and found that it was indeed Amex calling me.  Either way, I would always call the number on the back of the card regardless, you never know!  Never trust anybody!

One more time. The number may be real, but the caller may not. Caller ID can be spoofed. It is VERY easy for your phone to say Am EX on the display, but the caller is in Mumbai, India using high speed internet, voip, & a few dollars in computer parts. DO NOT give out personal, or financial information on a call you did not make yourself. Whatever the caller says, make a note of it, & then look the number up yourself.

I just posted the above comment about this number NOT being a scam.  I called the number on the back of my card and ended up talking to the same exact person I talked to by calling the 80-5234 number!  So it definitely goes to AMEX.

This is NOT a scam.  I looked the number up online before I called, just to make sure, and the person I talked to actually TOLD me to call the number on the back of my card to give my SSN so that they could complete the whole process of closing out a fraudulent account opened in my name.  So it's definitely legit.

The number 888-800-5234 IS a legit number for Amex.  I connects to their fraudulent security department.  I called the number on the back of my Amex card rather than trusting the number that was provided to me by someone calling me and saying they were calling from Amex to confirm whether I had called Amex earlier in the day.  Amex confirmed that the number I was provided was legit and transferred me to that department.  A new card and account number is being provided to me since my current account number is compromised.

You people sit here and argue beating a dead horse ! It's SIMPLE !

Call the Number on the Back or your card for ALL BUSINESS issues or go into a local branch ! SIMPLE !

NEVER give out ANY personel info UNLESS it is a legit number from the back of your card or from the banks website ! SIMPLE ! PERIOD END OF STORY PEOPLE !

If you get a call from a number that your not familiar with, hang up and call back so that you know your dealing with your financial institution ! Don't call a number back that someone you don't know gives you or your caller ID shows !  Look up the correct number from known resources and call back ! Yes it's a little more work and if it ends up being that the original caller was legit just apologize and tell them your just being cautious ! It's a fraud department they will totally understand !

In this era of computers and cell phones, scammers can hijack legit numbers and make legit numbers show up on your caller ID when it's not the number your really talking too ! Scammers can break into phone switches and do all sorts of things that's why if you call a number you have researched your safe !

NEVER NEVER NEVER give out personel info to incoming callers ! Again like many others have said, your bank has this info and for verification purposes they will only ask for the last four numbers of your SS number ! If they ask for the entire number BE SUSPICIOUS and never give it !

LAST BUT NOT LEAST . . . . Take care of and continually educate and remind your elder friends and family members to never ever give out any of their info ! They often get confused and pressured into giving their info to these scum bags ! What kind of low life p.o.s. preys on our elderly and steals their money they have worked an entire lifetime to earn and save ? ! Really ? These scum bags should be strapped to a tree and shot right between the eyes ! Better yet staked to a bed of red ants in the Nevada desert and left there to die a slow death ! Yes extreme but I HATE thieves that steel from the working class because they are too lazy and stupid to go out and make their own money ! Get a phuking life !

The interesting thing about all of this, is that half of these are scammers and the other half are not. The new way to scam is to get a hold of the 'fraud' phone number, the scammer then can call from anywhere and your caller ID will show up as the 888-800-5234 phone number. If they are asking you for personal information such as your credit card number, SS#, you are being asked to conference call your bank, or they are being evasive, you are being scammed.

The sad thing is that this number is a legit number! If the caller has your information just for you to verify, they will let you know about a specific amount being charged on your card and the specific place of where the charge is coming from. They will then ask if this is accurate or not. This would mean it really is the Amex Fraud Dept. looking out for you.

(I did have an amex credit card but closed it four years ago) Received a "Unknown" phone call with a similar voicemail, which basically told me to call this 888 phone number with a given reference#. I immediately called back, however the lady on that side kept asking me for my social security number, to "verify any possible accounts". I said no but suggested her to use the given reference#, but she INSISTED on my SSN. I have to say thank you and hung up the call. It is kind of strange, even some earlier posts have confirmed the 888 number is valid.

American Express calls from number 888-800-5234 and asks to call back on a person regarding a security issue.   Here is how screwed up Amex is.  This person does not work for our company.  I give Amex the matter number and they CANNOT LOCATE ANYTHING BASED ON MATTER NUMBER.  The ridiculous American Express computer can only see the matter number if someone first authenticates with a credit card.   But in this case I am NOT the cardholder.  I do NOT have the card number.  I only have the matter number which Amex left in its voice mail.

Amex:  how completely screwed up your security business process is!!   Think about this for two seconds, which is one second longer than the analyst who designed your current process thought about it.  If someone is committing fraud and leaving a false phone number, don't you want to know this information?  Won't this affect what Amex does next to know this?  Your process is designed so that Amex never learns this.  When the company you left the voice mail for returns your call and tells you that the person does not work at that number, your operators can do NOTHING with the information.

So, naturally, since the criminals are obviously smarter than you are, what these fraudsters do is put phone numbers that go to voice mail in their applications.  Because the Amex security business process is so braindead, Amex can never verify the phone number as correct or incorrect.   Amex keeps leaving message after message.  We keep responding with answer after answer that you have contacted a number where that person does not work, and Amex has no way to ever learn anything from the transaction.

The absolute stupidity of this situation is intolerable.   Honest people want to help you.  You can't help yourselves.

888-800-5234 called my home phone, left msg on my answering machine. Asked for my husband by name. Said they were American Express fraud dept calling about suspicious activity on our card.  We don't have an American Express card!  I blocked the phone number.  They immediately called MY cell phone number, asked for my husband. I asked why were they calling him on MY cell and told them neither of us have an Am Exp card!  He said they must have the wrong number!??   This may very well be Am Exp. but there is some kind of fraud going on. They have our home ph, my cell ph, and my husband's name? Wondering if we've had our identity stolen and someone is using our name and ph. numbers :/

It's a legit AMEX #.  I opened up a new account, received and activated my card, and then they called.  They wanted to confirm it was indeed me and not somebody opening up the account in my name.  A message was left by a man named Russ.  I called the # on the back of my card and when I spoke to a representative, it was Russ as well and he confirmed it was me.

I JUST dealt with this and I can say 100% it is valid.  I never answer a number I don't recognize, especially at work, but they actually left a message since I was the account in question.  Once I heard this message, I, of course, google searched, and then did the thing I should have done first and looked at my actual AmEx statement.  Someone had maxed out my card.  In fact, in the message, they tell you, for security purposes, not to call the number on your screen, but rather to call the number on the back of your card and provide you with specific instructions to resolve these matters.  Never once was I asked for my social security number, so I'm not sure what that's about.  In the midst of it all, my roommate, brother, and dad received a call from this same representative.  My roommate informed me before I called her back so I actually questioned the lady on the phone to which she said in these matters they actually research the member when they can't get ahold of them.  This would explain why some people who do not have AMEX cards still may have gotten this call and did not get a message left, because someone they know probably does and was the victim of fraudulent charges.  Believe this if you want, or don't, but speaking first hand as of 5 minutes ago, it's completely legit, and I'm glad they noticed this and brought it to my attention, because it was a card I honestly don't use anymore, so I don't know how much longer it would have gone on before I realized it.  I must also express how much I appreciated how friendly, calm, and polite the representative was as this could have been a much more stressful predicament.

Sure, it's valid.  Just like your post is valid.

When in doubt, call the number on the back of your card.  Do not call any number given to you in an email.  Do not give anyone who cold calls you any of your personal information.  Hang up and call the number on the back your card.  Simple.

After receiving a call from AMEX Identity Protection of possible fraud I called the AMEX customer service number to see if the Identity Protection number (1-888-800-5234) was valid. They assured me it was and when I called that number they were pleasant and helpful in explaining the reason for their call (new card used more than once during a short period of time-possible lost card). Should have known since my wife was out shopping. :-(

Part of a fraud campaign targeting numerous financial institutions.  Note the pattern of shill postings all claiming the number is real - an obvious giveaway.

The large number of phony posts claiming the call is real come from some con artists spamming the site to try to fool people.  There is a similar pattern to other fake calls claiming to be from Chase, Citibank, Bank of America, US Bank, Wells Fargo, RBC, PayPal, etc. all with the same shill postings:
