I received a call today re: my "late"  niece that has been deceased for 3 months from  Ascencion Point stating it was regarding a financial matter and that they wanted to speak with someone in authority over her affairs. I know she was not in debt so she couldn't possibly owe anything. The number was 888 806-9074 Ext. 3722

I'm also dealing with Ascension Point in regard to my deceased Father's Estate. I'm the Executrix. However, they aren't scammers - they're legitimate. When a deceased person has credit card debt, collection agencies take over the accounts, & the succession can not legally be closed until all debt is paid, unless the Estate is proven in court to be insolvent. Unfortunately, if your relative owned a house & a car, & the value of those 2 things is greater than the debt, the Estate is considered solvent. It might not be liquid assets, but is still considered assets.

It's been a year since my Dad passed away, & we still haven't been able to close the Estate because there isn't enough money to pay all of his debt out of the Succession account. I inherited his car & it's been registered in my name since a month after he passed away because it's legal to do that with vehicles in my state as long as you have a will. However, the bill collectors are saying the Estate is solvent because of the house & the car. They speak out of both sides of their mouth. On the one hand they say it's an attempt to collect a debt from the Estate & that I'm not personally responsible for his debt. However, they've got a claim with the Estate. which means it can't be closed until the debt is paid. Guess what that means? My brother & I ARE personally responsible for paying his debt! We can't legally do anything with the property until the Estate is settled, & it can't be settled until it's paid. Ascension Point would be quite happy for me to sell the car that I inherited from my Dad in order to pay his debt - nevermind that it's legally registered & titled to ME now!

Bottom line, just because you didn't know that your deceased relative had debt doesn't mean that they didn't.

"J", you should read the thread before posting that it's not a scam. They've been trying to collect "debt" from people who have been dead for 15 years and people who had no debts. They contact relatives of the deceased rather than the executor and do it often enough that it's unlikely to be by mistake. This is clearly not a legitimate operation.

I have told these people over and over that there was no estate. My Mother had Alzheimers and all was spent on her care. I sent death cert. and--copy of zero balance bank statement--they STILL trying to get money. Unfortunately--creditors have up to a year to try to find any money--so--even tho WE are not responsible for any debts--AND--they KNOW there is no money--they will hound you for a year. After that--they can be fined--

Unbelievable.  Nothing but ambulance chasers.  My father-in-law passed in March and, of course, the calls began.  My poor mother-in-law is 91 and this kind of crap stresses her out relentlessly.  I called these people today and advised Beverly (who changed her last name as we talked) to NEVER call my mother-in law again, that Dad's money is just fine and she and her company have nothing to do with it.  She attempted to imply a debt which, if you knew Dad, NEVER existed.  Regardless, they were informed they are crypt crawlers and to lose our phone numbers.

To the best of my knowledge - this is NOT a scam, but rather a debt collection agency for Citibank credit card.  I'm helping someone who is receiving these calls/correspondence.  Two years ago at my dad's passing I dealt with the same thing.  Credit card companies constantly scrubbed lists to determine if there are open credit cards of deceased people.  Even tho loved ones maybe don't have any 'creditors' they could have a balance due to credit cards companies that hadn't  been billed yet and if the cards have been cancelled, then the cc companies no longer take care of it...they hire companies like Ascencion...it is odd how/who they contact sometimes...and quite eery on how they know.........but I'm pretty sure it's legit.......they probably have very specific training on how to handle people thinking it's a scam....it would be a touch job

Get calls continuously from this number. I have no idea who they are. I'm assuming it's a scam as they never leave a msg. If it was legit they would leave a msg or e-mail us (if it's an issue with one of our accounts). SO annoying!

I received a phone call from 888-806-9074 concerning my fathers death.  They wanted to know who the person was that handled the financial.  Since I have been estranged from that family for 20 years, I didn't know.  He wanted to probe further, and when I asked who he represented and he replied that it was Ascension.  I asked for more information, as I was concerned that my no load siblings were trying to get me to pay any estate taxes.  I also told him that I was an It specialist with the federal government, he couldn't wait to get off the phone.  I had my lawyer look into it and found out it wasa scam.  I live in Virginia Beach, but my lawyer contacted the El Paso probate office to report it.

Received a number of calls during January 2014 from 888-806-9073; they left 2 robo messages.  Today I picked up the phone & spoke with a woman who was looking for 'the person who's handling the affairs of So-And-So's lately deceased".  She never told me the nature of her business with the party.  During the conversation I came to find out the "deceased" is a relative of my husband's first wife, from whom he's been divorced from 25+ years. She gave a name & number & my husband returned the call 1 hr later. He was asked first for a 'reference#',  and when he requested the name/ext# I was given, he was transferred to some voice mail. It is disturbing if this is not a legitimate business and it is allowed to continue doing business in this manner. I see some posts are 4 years old at this date.

My mother received a call from this number and the person identified herself as Christine. She said she needed to reach the person responsible for my father's estate about outstanding debts. I'm confident that the company and individual are attempting to take advantage of mother in her grief. Don't be fooled.

This number is not a scam. They are simply looking to speak to a personal representative for the estate, estate attorney or someone in the family who can speak for the estate. If you actually answer the phone and get through the security questions, they will explain. If you don't have the info needed to get through the call, you are probably not the correct party they are looking for and simply need to state so.

Estates go through probate every day and it is a completely legal process. If your loved one's estate is insolvent and cannot pay the outstanding bill, you may be asked if you would like to honor the debt in their name (which is not crazy to people who value their obligations and can pay them) but it is not, nor can ever be demanded of the survivors. There are regulations put in to place that does not allow such practice. If you are the executor or personal rep for an estate, it is then your obligation and responsibility to have a short conversation with a financial institution to resolve an outstanding matter. It doesn't mean you have to pay it, it simply means you need to let them know what is going on. Going through a loss is a tough thing. That is why people hire estate attorneys to handle these types of matters. A bank has nothing to go on other than old phone numbers and possible relatives in order to find out who is speaking on behalf of an estate. That is the reason for the random calls sometimes. It's not a fun thing but it is a fact of life when someone has debt and they pass. Its unfortunately something we all learn when someone we love passes. The callers cannot disclose such sensitive info to just anyone and that is the reason for them being vague when they cannot verify whether or not your are the right party. They are protecting the integrity of your loved ones info just as you would. With estate issues you have relatives that come out of the wood work trying to get involved so there are extra precautions that need to be taken.

Next time, just pick up the phone. If you are not the right party, just let them know. Most of these posts seem to be folks that didn't even talk to anyone. If they would have verified their role as a personal rep for the estate, and verified security info, the whole situation would have made itself clear and the issue would have been understood and resolved.

Total scam artists. My father died 15 years ago, and some creditor has suddenly discovered it and is hounding my 85-year-old mother as if it just happened! She lives with us and is on a fixed income but always pays her bills, and she is obviously distraught by someone acting as though she's in arrears and owes money due to my father's "recent death." It's disgusting -- clearly, these people prey on the elderly and should be stopped!

My stepmother recently died and this number called trying to find out 'who handled her affairs.' They were so clueless about POA survivership and executionerships that they quit talking to me the moment I began asking questions about what they meant. I got the distinct impression that it was some kind of collection scam.

Have received multi calls saying my recently deceased husband left an unpaid debt.  Told them nothing like that exists.  They continued to call and I stopped answering when I saw this number.  Finally one day I answered and asked for the caller's supervisor.  I told her the same thing and that she worked for a scamming outfit.  She insisted that was not true - they were a legitimate company.  I gave her my attorney's name and phone # and then called him and told him about the calls.  He mentioned the State Attorney General to her.
Before I hung up I told the operator that when she got home that night - I wanted her to Google this phone number and read the miles of complaints registered about her legitimate company.  Or she could Google the company name and scroll down to this number and see what she finds.  Hope she did so.
I also emailed all of our relatives whose names appeared in my husband's obituary and told them about the whole thing.  I'm afraid this company collects names from death notices.  The day after I notified my attorney - I received a letter signed by Christina Mallen asking me to please contact her.  I saved the letter but did not follow through.
I noticed in these 4 pages of complaints - that a Citibank connection is mentioned quite a few times and I never had a problem until I officially notified them of his death and cancelled that card.
My attorney told me they plan on filing a claim against the estate.  He told them to go ahead.  We'll see what happens.

I have been getting calls from this number for some time. This is Asension Point Recovery Services.  They are collectors for the debt of deceased persons (apparently among other things). My Mom passed away last July. I called her creditors to let them know she had passed. Shortly after that I started getting calls from two "recovery" companies regarding my Mom's debts. They called repeatedly and often. I got fed up with dealing with them and stopped answering the phone. I sent them a copy of Mom's death certificate, my letter of administration, and a letter explain how and where to file a claim on Mom's estate and gave them the claim period dates. I also stated that I can do nothing until I hold an estate sale and provide an accounting to the Fiduciary Supervisor of my county. Neither of them filed a claim. Instead they tried to keep harassing me. They told me repeatedly that they know I am not responsible for my Mom's debts and then they asked me to pay them. The best suggestion I can make to anyone who is being harassed by this company or others like them is to ignore their calls. After I got fed up with their calls I fired off a couple of nasty letters to them and Ascension Point finally filed a claim. The other one still has not filed, but sent me another form asking for info that I had already given them both in a letter and to one of their reps on the phone.

My mother received a message on her home phone from a pastor? somebody, left this toll free number and said how sorry they were about the death of "my mother's name!" She went into a screaming fit, saying who would be so cruel.  Obviously, what I'm saying is my mother is alive and received a message about her own death.  I called back and they said they assisted clients with estate and probates.  I said, my mother was alive and they ought to posess a death certificate with absolute verification before they  call elderly people with this frightening, incorrect information. I asked who their client was and he said he could not divulge this information, but that he would pass this info back to them so they could research it further?*?!?* Ridiculous. What's so strange is they leave legitimate phone numbers and have  a Better Business Rating.

Bill it is a scam if you don't owe CitiBank any money and they are trying to collect money from you that is not owed.  I have reported them to all three credit bureaus and asked the bureaus to put an alert on my account.  Anyone who is lowlife enough to try to collect money that is not owed from bereaved relatives.  I think they are not always legal.

These people are low-life scum.  I don't know how they can get dressed to go to work in the morning after having to look at themselves in the mirror.  They contacted me expressing their condolences on the death of my husband, then wanted to know about his estate.  They called a whole lot and I finally told them I did not want to talk to them anymore.  I had read all about them on the Internet.   I  think they got my husband's name from the creditcard company.  I had asked the creditcard company many times to take his name off the account.  I attempted to use the credit card twice and it was declined - when I called to find out what the problem was they said another division of our company is handling your account now.  We will transfer you to them.   They transferred me and the person who answered the phone answered as Ascension Point Recovery Services.
The credit card company was AT&T Universal Card.  I have written to all three credit bureaus telling them what happened.  My account with this creditcard company was uptodate, so I guess AT&T Universal/CitiBank owns this AscensionPoint Recovery Services.  My husband was quite ill before he died and did not leave the house on his own for over a year, so I know he did not owe any money to anyone.   These people are just scam artists.  It is unbelievable they could call or write to people who are in grief trying to extract money.
