Scam
this # 888-814-8696 keeps calling people in my distant social circle demanding payment for a "debt" on my behalf. asking for credit card info and being very threatening. They're telling these people that I listed them on loan documents. obviously it's a lame scam, but it's annoying bc the people they're calling - never me of course - are probably wondering if I did list them on financial documents. And that's what really gets me!! Plus, the bigger question remains of how they deduced that I even know the people they're calling.. bc none have been close friends or family. They called an old neighbor of mine when I lived in an apt complex over 5 years ago + my girlfriend's mother (who happens to have same name as me. God only knows who else they've called.. old associates who perhaps don't have my current contact info. Anyways, just wanted to add my 2 cents on matter!! ;)

Call frequently using different phone numbers so they cant be blocked threatening me about action taken against me for medication something or other .

They have a thick accent and mispronounce everything.  When called back its a recording.

The first time they called I reported to Attorney General because they said I owed Cashnet.  Ive never borrowed from them.  Its always a different reason when they call.

Called from 877 816 0564 but asking me to call 888 814 8696 about personal information.  This happened to my husband someone kept calling saying they would come to his work, make sure he lost his job and be thrown in jail for $400 debt.  Attorney General Office says they could be calling from next door and do not answer phone again.

Got a message from another number to call this one - yep, same old debt collection scam. I know it can be tough, but you have to ignore them. Even if you do owe a debt, you can't be taken to jail in this country (unless it's the IRS lol).

I get the same thing, supposedly from a PRG, & get the same calls from other numbers: 716-335-9947, 888-583-1164, 767-275-9193. I don't answer but they leave voice mails. The one time I did answer sometime last summer - yes, they've been going on that long! - they would not give me any info on who or what I owed, & hung up almost immediately when I started asking for info.

For the past six months i have been getting threatening calls from this number at work. They tell me that I owe to a bank, that by the way I am still active with, and some kind of pay in advance place. They ask for me to go ahead and make payment arrangements by giving them my banking information or a credit card number. When i decline and ask them to please send me paperwork on this matter so I can speak to my attorney on it, they become very rude and threaten to send me to jail if i don't make a payment arrangement with them right then and there. One of the most recent calls I got was from Carmela Ward. She has been the rudest of them all. When I asked her for a claim number or anything they could give me as to the validation of this claim she responded that she could not give it to me, when she realized she would not get any personal information she became very upset and eventually hung up on me!

What are you reactivating if you call it back or answer? The debt? If your atty told you that then he is very WRONG. The only way to reactivate the date on a debt is if you agree and make a payment to the collection company.

I have gotten several phone calls/messages from this company (PRG), they somehow have even gotten my dads phone number asking him if he is going to pay my debt that is owed to them?? I have no idea what debt I supposedly owe as I have never received any type of documentation.  I even answered my phone once out of irritation and was told that they will be sending papers to the county that I live in, when I asked what these papers were for the man told me we could settle the debt over the phone with my bank card number and that all I needed to do was confirm my social security number and he would give me the information on what this debt was?? I have reported PRG each time they have called me w/their threats and they call from several different numbers. This has been going on now for over a year and here they were going to serve me w/papers and needless to say I have never received anything and to this day don't even know what this debt is that I owe.

She asked me my name and I told her why I should give my name to her since  I don't know her and i asked Ms. Sanders how and where she got my number. She didn't answer my question and she got the nerved to be mad. This number is scam and fraud . Hope these people will be caught by authorities . Spoke to this PRG today. Person named Ms. Saunders.  They said they are calling from the fraud department.  Sounds like they are some sort of collection agency and try to get people to phone them back with the threat there is a fraud investigation going on.  Not true.  I am not in collection with anyone, pay all my debts, and there is no fraud.  Clearly they are some sort of fishing company scamming to collect money.

Section 809 of the FDCPA http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf requires 3rd-party debt collectors to give debtors written notice of debt (the key word is *shall*) :
"§ 809. Validation of debts
(a) Within five days after the initial communication with a consumer in connection with the collection of any debt, a debt collector shall, unless the following information is contained in the initial communication or the consumer has paid the debt, send the consumer a written notice containing?
(1) the amount of the debt;
(2) the name of the creditor to whom the debt is owed;
(3) a statement that unless the consumer, within thirty days after receipt of the notice, disputes the validity of the debt, or any portion thereof, the debt will be assumed to be valid by the debt collector;
(4) a statement that if the consumer notifies the debt collector in writing within the thirty-day period that the debt, or any portion thereof, is disputed, the debt collector will obtain verification of the debt or a copy of a judgment against the consumer and a copy of such verification or judgment will be mailed to the consumer by the debt collector; and
(5) a statement that, upon the consumer?s written request within the thirty-day period, the debt collector will provide the consumer with the name and address of the original creditor, if different from the current creditor."

A Collection Agent May Not?

Here are the top 11 actions prohibited by the The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act:

Misrepresent Him or Herself

A debt collector may not misrepresent himself as an attorney or law enforcement officer.

Use the Telephone to Annoy or Harass

A collection agent may not cause a telephone to ring or engage any person in telephone conversation repeatedly or continuously with an intent to annoy, abuse, or harass anyone at the called number.

Threaten Arrest or Lawsuit

A collection agent may not threaten a consumer with arrest. It may not threaten legal action that is either not permitted or not actually contemplated. In other words, a the threat of a lawsuit may be an empty one.

Use Abusive or Threatening Language

A debt collector may no use abusive or profane language in the course of communication related to the debt.

Publish a Bad Debt List

Publishing the consumer?s name or address on a "bad debt" list is prohibited.

Contact By Embarrassing Media

A debt collector may not communicate with a consumer by post card. It may not use any language or symbol, other than the debt collector?s address, on any envelope when communicating with a consumer by use of the mails or by telegram. A debt collector may use its business name if such name does not indicate it is in the debt collection business.

Contact a Consumer at Work

A collection agent may not communicate with consumers at their place of employment after being told this is unacceptable or prohibited by the employer.

Seek Unjustifiable Amounts

A debt collector may not demand any amounts not permitted under an applicable contract or as provided under law.

Contact a Consumer Represented by an Attorney

A collection agent may not contact a consumer after it learns the consumer is represented by a lawyer.

Communicate With a Consumer After Receiving a Validation Request

If a consumer sends a written §1692g response within 30 days, the collection agent may not communicate with the consumer until it mails the consumer the requested verification of original creditor's name and address.

Communicate With Third Parties

A debt collector may not reveal or discuss the nature of a consumer?s debts with third parties other than the consumer?s spouse or attorney. A collection agent may contact neighbors or co-workers only to obtain location information. It may contact a third party again if it has reason to believe the information the party provided previously is false.

Bills.com FDCPA FAQ

Below are questions Bills.com readers ask frequently:

Can a Collection Agent Call My Cell Phone?

Yes. However, if you tell the debt collector it may not use that number because it is a cell phone, it may not contact you again at that number.

I Keep Receiving Dozens of Calls From Collection Agents. Is That Legal?

No. Unscrupulous collection agents will use "block parties" or "office parties" where they contact a consumer, multiple neighbors, or co-workers telling them they need to reach the consumer on an urgent matter. This is not permitted under the FDCPA.

A Collector Says I Will Be Arrested if I Do Not Pay

This was a true statement before the US Civil War, but has not been true since. People may be arrested if an aggressive judge files a bench warrant for a person who does not appear at a hearing relating to a lawsuit regarding a debt. However, in that case, the offense is the failure to respond to a court order, and not the existence of the debt. As stated above, it is illegal under the FDCPA to threaten a consumer with arrest if the consumer does not pay the debt.

These people are calling my family members, harassing them and trying to get them to make payments and when told that they aren't going to get money the caller gets pissed and says to quit wasting her time and hangs up!  Seriously??  They give just barely enough false information to my family members to make them worry that I am actually in trouble and then try to scam money out of them to keep me out of "legal trouble."

These folks called looking for "Courtney Leanne Parker."  Said this was a secondary contact number for said person.  Said to reference case number 301435for and to call them at 888-814-8696, ext 316.  Claimed to be "Mrs. Sanders" from "ORG Fraud Investigation Department."

We have owned (paid off - no mortgage) this house since 1994, and there has never been a person living here by that name, nor do we know of anybody by that name.  Our phone number has belonged to us since 1991, and no person by that name again.  Scary thing is, our last name is Parker.

Hopefully I did not open a can of worms ... called them back to tell them somebody lied.  Told them it is fraud alright - said somebody must have gotten into the phone book to look up a number belonging to a Parker resident.  First lady said she could not do anything without the case number.  I hung up, retrieved the case number from answering machine, and called again.  This lady wasn't as nice as the first.  Claimed she would remove our number from case file.

I did not give out any personal information.  They have caller id, so she saw (and read back to me) our phone number, but that is all.  She did not ask me for any information.  If they call back, I think I will have a little fun with them, now that I see they are bogus.  When I tire of my new toy, I will put them on our blocked list -when both numbers.

I got the exact same call tonight from Ms. Ward, and it scared me at first, especially when she knew my county and state of residency, because I do have debts that I cannot pay after losing my job and being a single mother of 2 young children. I have been desperately seeking work to either take care of my debts or file bankruptcy. But the calls are getting out of hand and are threatening. They leave numerous messages on my father's phone. It's absurd but after reading all the posts, I do feel a little better.

I received a voice recording with file # (very difficult to understand- very bad recording) that due to lack of response, it will go to Lost Litigation Dept as a crime of internet. To call back 877-799-9234 to submit a personal statement as to the reason for not paying this debt.
After researching 877-799-9234, this number was used to claim a prize of a Ford Escape.

They are a "collection" the goes by the name of PRG.  These companies that have toll free numbers have to pay a fee to their phone company for every call that comes in.  I say bombard them with calls and hike up there phone bills.  I found it quite cathartic to call them and "go off" on the rep that answers the phone.  Maybe they'll get sick of their crappy, bad karma inducing job, and quit.

got a call from this number, which I didn't answer, and all I heard on my answering machine was talking between 3 or 4 people. Sounded like a auto dialer and since no one picked up on my end they were just waiting for next number to be dialed. Since no one left actual message i have no idea what it was about but from the other posts I see it is a scam. I am in the process of borrowing a large sum of money and my banker says my credit report is excellent and he has no concerns over it so if it is a debt collector it is a SCAM.
