Hmmmm...  I have no college debt.  My husband has a consolidated student loan but we are current on payments...  I have no other debts outstanding except my car which is paid almost 6 months ahead and I just gave them another payment...

Only "debt" I have that is delinquent is our house which is over a year behind and in foreclosure and they have never called from this number...  I guess I will add it to the ignore list.

Over the last few weeks have been receiving numerous calls several times a day from 1-888-815-2553. I have no debts, no credit card balances, no college loans (I'm almost 60!), and do not owe anyone. What the heck??? I think I will try cussing them out. I'm at that point.
Really?

Its all well and fine that you're irritated by collection calls and all but it's not your place to lecture or tell the internet your life story. ~Thank you.

I'm not a student nor do I have any loans out. My daughter is a student but she is still in high school and doesn't have any loans out either. It's so annoying when they call my cell phone 4 times a day.

This called me 2 times within minutes of each other, did not answer b/c did not recognize number.
When I called it back the man answered so fast that I did not understand what he said. When I ask
what kind of company this was he said he could not tell me. I said why would you call my number and not leave a voice mail? He said due to privacy law that he couldn't. I said I have never heard that.  He said he could look me up by my acct or my name. I said I am not giving you my name, I don't know who you are and you are telling me anything.  I don't have an acct with you. I said are you a collection agency and he said that as long as I had guessed it that he could tell me that it was. I said you have the wrong number. And I hung up.

They call me from this number almost weekly even though I have told them that they have the wrong number and to stop calling me. I have even sent their number in many times to the do not call registry complaint section and I am still getting calls on a regular basis. 2 today within 60 minutes. There is a recording that says do not hang up. Important information about your account. BOGUS!!

Debt Collector
I keep getting calls from this number and it's the same lady all the time. (although she claims, Sir this the first time, "I", have called and talked to you). Liar! I used to be a collector for 7 years and 2 years in third party collections with a law firm..I was pretty good and know allllllll the tricks.
So this call, it's for the first and last name of my son (Tom Smith, you get the picture) for a college loan. My son never went to college, or got a loan of ANY KIND..EVER..NO Credit card, phone etc...he's a MARINE..and I don't tell these yahoo's any of this..I know what they don't like...DON'T EVER GIVE ANY INFO..ASK TO SPEAK TO SUPERVISOR tell them to stop calling and take my number off (they have to do this it's the LAW)..DON'T EVER GIVE ANY INFO...GET MAD AND DON'T LET THEM TALK..SWEAR A FEW TIMES..I know you may not like it..but say the F--word once or twice..they will warn you (maybe)
and then hang up...(it's kinda of a pay back...most collector's hate it.) That's why the turn over rate for collector's is pretty high,,most don't last 6 months...I hope this has help someone..   :0)

Dominick has repeatedly called our office phone, wanting to talk to our principal manager.  Following our protocol, he refuses to say what company he is with or what it is in regards to.  We cannot put the call through with the lack of information.  He then becomes extremely obnoxious with whomever answers the phone.  We do not need this harassment.  I've asked to speak to his supervisor, which he refuses.  I've told him not to call our number again, which he refuses.  I believe once you tell a debt collector (if this is what this company does) to no longer call you, legally they can no longer call. He said he would not quit calling until he is able to reach my boss.  I told him, we will never put the call through to her and he won't be speaking to her.  When I called the number back, he answered the phone, unfortunately, but I did finally get out of him the name of the company was CP, Inc.  After researching, I found this site where I can log my complaint.

It's not the end of it; they call back once they find out who you are and harass you.   I got calls from this number for someone else, then they magically became for me.  You may or may not have a debt, but these are scammers.  Call the institution directly and don't give them any more info.

Did you get a notice a few years ago that the failing bank handling one of your loans lost your info?  That happened to me, and I've been waiting for something like this crap ever since.

They knew one of my colleges when they called me, but they were trying to collect a debt that's not on my credit report, supposedly for tuition.  When I called back and asked who they were, I was harassed and hung up on.  (not that I was overly polite.)  She spoke really slowly and I have limited minutes.

She knew the last 4 of my social and talked a big game, but she had no information beyond that and an account number I have with her company, whose name she said quickly enough I didn't catch it.

Called. Allegedly regarding someone with a social security number ending in specified 4 digits (not mine) but that of a family member who has not lived here in years. Would not give any information to me as to what it was about.

Yeah, they called a new google voice number that is not associated with any real name. Repeatedly.

They never left a message, so I am not sure what they are looking for, but I am confident that they won't find it.

An added note for those of you who DO have delinquent / defaulted student loans. Before setting up a payment plan with anyone else for an educational loan. The government has consolidation, income contingent and income based repayment plans. I know someone who was in default for a long time, contacted them and is now in repayment with very small payments. Go to http://www.direct.ed.gov/RepayCalc/dlindex2.html for more info.

I had 3 calls from this number in 30 minutes this morning. The first 2 phone rang once then stopped. I answered the third call. A lady kept asking if I was Janis and if I would verify my birthdate. When I stated I wouldn't verify any personal info unless she told me what it was about she said she couldn't. Finally she said it was about an educational loan. Wouldn't say who it was with.I have loans but they are all up to date and paid monthly. I wasn't about to give her my personal info over the phone. My two younger brothers have also been getting calls at my MOM's home from this number. I guess they are just looking up people with the same last name in the same area????

The only thing you are intitled to is unofficial transcripts, and future employers dont even look at those. A college has the right to hold your transcripts and/or diploma until you pay your debt or set up a payment arrangement and some colleges wont give you it until its paid off even if you are on an arrangement

Not true, If you owe a debt to a non profit college then there are no statue of limitations on educational debt. You can thank Bush for passing that law. And further more-- If you owe the government money they will find you, they will take your check or taxes.... so stop running from Coast, they are just trying to help.

I like the sound of that. However, I am a professor and applications require my transcripts be sent to the employer prior to consideration. Does anyone know of a law that states they cannot withhold transcripts if it is for consideration of employment?

Yes they will hold your transcript hostage from you getting a copy but they will not withhold it form an employer who is requesting it. They cannot keep you from getting a job.

Ok, but what about inflated charges for moving out of campus housing at ASU. My campus housing charged me for numerous things, including their stove. Why? Not sure. That seems like something they need to take care of and was on the list for repairs I sent them along with a laundry list of other items they never took care of such as the dishwasher, blinds, tile, etc. I did appeal and got 2k reduced but not the stove.

One of my neighbors was charged for painting when she moved out. That also seems like something the housing office is responsible for.

They did not try to collect until the statute of limitations for taking them to court passed!
Now, they are holding my transcripts until I pay for their stove, which by the way, I hardly used.

So, I think that yes, there is a statute when it is a private debt to the school, but they are holding my transcripts hostage indefinitely until I pay.

Of course a "collector" would want you to think this. Look up your individual state statutes.

You're only partially right about educational loans. If you have a FEDERALLY FUNDED educational loan then yes, they stick with you for life. If you have a loan from or debt to a private school it falls under the statute of limitations. I'm speaking from experience. My loans passed the statute of limitations last year and they were deleted. Remember, Sallie Mae and loans like that are the ones that will stick with you forever, not debt actually to the school.
