Non-profit Organization
The number 8888318816 (888-831-8816) has been in use by Ironman Curling since Nov 6, 2006 (possibly earlier, but this is the first record of a call coming in on our bill).  Ironman Curling is a not-for-profit organization who FUN-raise for the Heart & Stroke Foundation by hosting an annual outdoor curling event in February on the Assiniboine River at The Forks Historic Port in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.  It is very possible that CIBC used to own this number and had continued to send it as their CallerID after Nov 6, 2006 (as appears to be the case by the notes above), but it is no longer a CIBC number.  If you wish to reach CIBC, please look up their local phone number or call the number located on the back of your CIBC card, or go to their local office.  If you wish to see more information about Ironman Curling, please visit their website at http://www.IronmanCurling.com

Thank you

Got this call this morning, said that my debit card may have been compromised and said to call the number on the back of my debit card. This is legit. You need to call CIBC using the number on your card and see what they were calling for.

I got a call from this number as well. It came up as CIBC and told me my card had been limited because of potential fraud and to call the number on the back of my card. Seems pretty legit - if it's a scam why would they have me call the CIBC number?

these sorts of calls from 800 888 866 and so on numbers one of the reasons I will not conduct business over the phone with csr of any company.  I also don't make long distance calls to csrs.

It was CIBC calling to say my debit card was going to be deactivated because they had sent me a new card with a chip.  When I called back, the automated service asked for my card number but I waited for a real person to talk to.

This number is CIBC. I got a call and saw this strand and got a little worried, but I called the number on the back of my card and asked the guy about this call and he said "yup, that's us, looks like it was just a courtesy call." So don't worry, not a scam.

I got an automated message left on my phone from this number telling me (in French) that it was EXTREMELY URGENT that I call them back at that number OR visit my CIBC Convenience Banking Center.  Since I didn't want to call back a number that they gave me in the message (I could have been calling anywhere!) I called my banker in the morning and she checked all my accounts and told me there was nothing at all to indicate a problem or that anyone from CIBC had tried to reach me.  She also said that since my profile with them said ENGLISH, it was very strange that the phone message was entirely in French.

She then said that the only thing she couldn't check was whether VISA had been suspicious about a transaction and had wanted to confirm it with me.  She suggested I call VISA directly to check on that.  I did, and again there was nothing at all to indicate any problem or any attempted call to me.

That was on Friday morning.

On Saturday morning I stoppped at a CIBC ATM to withdraw $200 and it was DECLINED!!!  (I had several thousand dollars in that account at the time.)  I tried another machine and it was also declined.

I got to a computer and checked online and found that from two days before, a new transaction had been posted to my account where someone (NOT ME!!) had withdrawn $500 from a CIBC branch ATM.  I don't know where that ATM was but suspect it was in Ontario somewhere (I'm in Montreal).

I called the Convenience Banking center using the number on the back of my card and found that indeed they had tried to reach me to tell me my card was compromised and that they were cancelling it for my safety.  And I won't be liable for that $500 withdrawal either.

I went to my branch (open Saturday) and got a new convenience card within 5 minutes.  This one had a chip on it and they told me it would be a lot more secure than the old one.  I asked how it would be possible for someone to get not only my convenience bank card number but also my PIN as I was always very very careful about not letting anyone see what I was entering.  They told me that the way this scam usually takes place is that someone either has a fake interac machine or somehow manages to make a copy electronically of what I enter on the PIN pad of a machine.  Not a question of someone looking over my shoulder at all!

I got a call from that number, seeing a 1-888 number I didn't pick up. I called back and they ask you to enter your card number (wich i think is the first step to their scam) guy says he works for Cibc asks you to go to the ATM and change you NIP within an hour. So i guess its a scam... i don't know yet if they took some money. Just by the quality of his <sutumer support service> it's very suspicous.
