I did it guys!  I figured out how to get these a-holes to stop calling!  Make them have phone sex with you when they call.  After telling them to stop calling multiple times and even reporting them, I finally broke down and just told them that if they insist on calling me I insist on having phone sex.  Then, when one of them threatened to call the cops and report me, I just pointed out that they were calling me, not the other way around, and BAM - no more annoying calls from the SunTimes.

Only downside:  now I have blueballs.  :(

I found this on the website of the Do Not Call Registry: "telemarketer or seller may call a consumer with whom it has an established business relationship for up to 18 months after the consumer's last purchase, delivery, or payment - even if the consumer's number is on the National Do Not Call Registry. In addition, a company may call a consumer for up to three months after the consumer makes an inquiry or submits an application to the company. And if a consumer has given a company written permission, the company may call even if the consumer's number is on the National Do Not Call Registry. One caveat: if a consumer asks a company not to call, the company may not call, even if there is an established business relationship. Indeed, a company may not call a consumer - regardless of whether the consumer's number is on the registry - if the consumer has asked to be put on the company's own do not call list."
ALSO, I found that my number gets back on these telemarketers' lists via a lot of sources. For example, the lengthy explanations of 'terms' on some websites, where you click "I agree" before you proceed, often include a statement that says that you allow your name to be included on their marketing list. Then your name gets circulated. I first discovered this when I signed up at a coupon site. I now search those terms for the words like 'marketing' and 'solicitation' to determine if the text includes such a statement.

Recently had identity compromised. Thief actually forwarded our home phone to his phone. When bank called our number the call went to the thief! Bank then got fax requesting large amount of money to be wired to S Korea. Any chance this number had anything to do with it? Possibly, maybe we hear nothing because your calls are being forwarded!  Cancel the forward option on your home phone. Who uses it anyway?? Check your credit report often!

I repeatedly get calls from (888) 848-4637 and no messages.  Is there any way I can block whoever the sender is from calling?  It's extremely annoying.

Been getting these for about a month now. Pickup no one there. for the last week i don't answer and then delete it from the missed call file. I will be blazing the sun-times in the morning and telling them how rude, disrespectful and totally unprofessional this is.

I've heard that if you do business with them, and you have a relationship with them - that gives them the 'right' to call. Dunno.

Call the number. Press "0" to speak to someone. I spoke to a woman who said she will remove my number from their call lists. We subscribe to one of their papers, and that's how they got my number. The woman said once she places me on THEIR list, they will NOT call back. It's not for a limited period of time, but for good - We'll see.

One thought: Contact each of the companies who call and bother you, and give them your "new phone number". In reality, you'll be giving them the phone numbers of the other ones who bother you. Or, you might want to consider using your work number to stop the annoying calls at home.... Or even use an OLD phone number. In case they need to access your account information, at least you'll remember that.

I am unlisted AND registered on the Do Not Call list and STILL get these annoying soliciting phone calls.  Isn't this practice illegal?

It was, in fact, from the Chicago Sun Times looking to sell the weekend edition.  They are in the same media group the the Lake County News-Sun, which we have a subscription to.  Just told him that I wasn't interested.  And that was the end of it.  The papers give jobs to local people, so I can't complain that they are drumming up some new customers.

They called again today asking for us to subscribe to the Chicago Sun-Times (daily hard copy).  Since we have already asked them to stop calling, I can now report them to www . donotcall . gov and maybe they can fine them.

If you ask a company with which you have an existing business relationship to place your number on its own do-not-call list, it must honor your request.  You should keep a record of the date you make the request.

The next time they call, get the person's full name and calmly tell him that you are again requesting to be added to his company's do not call list.  Since the new call is in clear violation of your already expressed wishes, tell him in no uncertain terms that you will report them to the FTC's national do not call registry as well as the BBB.

I know you've already done all this, but you have to be as persistent in stopping them as they are in calling and bothering you.  Good luck!

This number appears to be the "Customer Service" number for the Chicago Sun-Times.  Today they called and hung up, but I know that I have told them in the past that we are not interested in their on-line subscription promotion -- even if it is for only $1 a year (to begin with).  We already subscribe to a daily newspaper (hard copy) that is part of the Sun-Times Media Group, so I guess that exempts them from adhering to the government's do not call list.

Even if you have a prior relationship with a company (or one of their sister companies) I think they still have to add you to their own do not call list if you explicitly and clearly tell them to do so and make a note of those details.  Then, if they call again, you can complain to the FTC and hopefully the callers will be fined.  Hopefully.

They call, and no one's there. Tired of it.

SUGGESTION: We recently purchased a new cordless phone system for the house, and I was happy to learn this system offers 'Call Blocking'. We can block up 50 numbers (wish it was unlimited). If you're looking to upgrade your home's cordless phone, look for a phone offering this feature. IT WORKS. Numbers tagged with "Call Blocked" will still ring the phone once, but then will be disconnected. Our phone was made by pana soni c.

Thanks for the above posts. Will add them to my phone filter so they no longer can harrass us since reporting them doesn't seem to do any good! I feel that if they want me to pick up the phone, then have their name show up in the caller ID box, otherwise I no longer pickup the phone.

Toll free call is what it says.  Answered on third ring and was hung up on.   Why bother calling.   My motto is if its important enough leave a message or talk.  If its not important enough to leave a message then its not important enough for me to answer.

Got a call from this number, one of many that keep calling everyday all day.  This is a most annoying, maddening, irritating and outright crude form of harrassment.  These people just dont let up.  Do they even come up for air.
