A guy called me from this number and fast talked me about my computer and how it had all these errors and it needed to be fixed because I most likely had a virus in my computer.  He had me go into the startup menu and go to event viewer and lookup the errors and I asked him why he was calling me and how much it was going to cost. He kept trying to fast talk me scaring me telling me that my computer was in really in bad shape and I needed to let him fix before it got damaged so I just hung up on him because he was starting to creep me out. He wouldn't say what company he was with but he did mention Microsoft and how his company gets an alert when my computer gets an error even if I don't report the error. I got creeped out because he was so persistent and I was afraid he was going to try to remotely take control of my computer. After I hung up on him he immediately called back 2 more times but I wouldn't answer.

I received a call from Richard Matthews with such a heavy Indian accent I had to have him spell his American name when I asked for a call back number and his name!  He called me on my cell phone while I was at work telling me that I had a 'virus threatening my computer, as we speak.'  He indicated that he was a certified Microsoft software technician and when I asked if he worked for Microsoft he just repeated that he was a certified Microsoft software technician.  I told him I was at work and could not talk to him while at work, nor was I anywhere near my home computer.  He asked me to call him back when I was home and at my computer.  How do they get access to our information and when will this harrassment stop?

"Microsoft Technician" from "VFix", but sounded like "WeFix".  Claims to work from 9am-9pm PST.  Heavily Accented male going by the name of Phillip Knight called my Work Cell Phone claiming he got my phone number from my IP information whenever I clicked "Report a Problem" to microsoft.  This guy was a total moron.  My iPhone (Apple product) was somehow supposed to be given to a microsoft technician.  Nothing added up.  Oh, and the number came in showing "301-276"...yet another red flag.  I also found this helpful blog about the virus:  http://www.computerrepairtips.net/phone-call- ... irus-is-a-scam/

(I don't blame you if you don't want to click it).  This is an excerpt of what was shared:

"If you receive a phone call claiming to be from ?Microsoft? or someone claiming to work on their behalf, telling you that you have a virus on your computer which they will help you fix over the phone, It Is A Scam. Hang up the phone, do not let them have remote control access to your computer and do not give them any money.

This scam has been quietly doing the rounds in the UK and Ireland since at least 2009 but it appears to be on the rise. The scam goes like this;

Householders receive an unsolicited phone call from someone claiming to be from ?Microsoft? and they are told that there is a serious virus problem with their computer and the caller offers to help to fix the problem.
The householder will get the hard sell from the caller regarding all sorts of bad things that will happen to their computer if they do not sort out the problem immediately.
To try to gain the unwitting householders trust, the caller will direct them to the Event Viewer in Windows which shows details about various hardware and Windows software issues. This Event Viewer is always full of messages, even on a healthy computer, but the caller will convince them that these are the warning signs of the impending disaster.
When the caller has their trust, they ask the householder to go to a website and download a remote control program that will help them fix the problem. After downloading this, the caller will take control of the computer, the householder will see their mouse pointer move around while various programs and folders are opened. The caller will claim that they know exactly what the problem is and how to fix it.
Then they will ask for credit card details for a piece of software that will supposedly remove the ?virus?.
Customers should hopefully already have alarm bells ringing at the mention of credit card details and end the conversation. The software that they sell to fix the computer will do nothing except tell you every now and then that everything is fine, all viruses have been removed. But in reality, it could be downloading all sorts of malware to your computer.

However, part of the scam?s damage may already have been done when the customer downloaded the remote control software. This software could well have the capability to sit in the background for months or years, stealing personal information from the computer like bank login details and other personal details that could be used for identity theft purposes. These callers could also be using this software to infect your computer with real viruses and malware.

Quote from Microsoft:
?Microsoft takes the privacy and security of our customers and partners personal information very seriously. We are advising customers to treat all unsolicited phone calls with skepticism and not to provide any personal information to anyone over the phone or online. Anyone who receives an unsolicited call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft should hang up. We can assure you Microsoft does not make these kinds of calls.?"

I received the first call on 03/30.2012. The male identified himself as a Microsoft Technician and stated they had received numerous error reports from my computer. This sounded legit since on several occasions I would have a box pop up stating that an error had occured and the program would be shut down. I followed his instructions to a certain point when he told me he could now view my screen. His next step was to give me a website but halfway through the address, the phone went dead.
I immediately called my internet carrier who gave me instructions to shur down my computer and disconnect the internet from the computer. The following Monday, I took my computer in to the internet carrier who ran numerous scans and found no problems, but because I pay my bills online my bank and I decided it would be in my best interest to destroy the debit card and have another one issued.
Today, 04/10/2012, they actually had the nerve to call me again. I asked him for his number and said I would call him back. He willingly gave me the 888 number and his name but oddly enough when he spelled his name, he had to correct the spelling. I spoke with the tech at my internet carrier, gave him the number I had been given, and after a very short wait; he came back on the line. His info stated right away, "This is a scam".
This has been reported to our local sheriff's department and they now have a file tracking the calls from this company, if indeed it is a company. Fortunately, the caller did not have time to do any harm, but the next person may not be as lucky as I am.
Just a word of warning, every one should be aware of this scam. The caller on both occasions had a heavy " Indian" accent, but would not reveal his physical location. Hard to believe that people are so ruthless.

I called the number back and got the same song and dance that others have. He talked about event viewer, and that my computer sent something out over the error reporting feature, which I have turned off.  When I told him that he wanted to to transfer me to his supervisor for further discussion.  I asked if he was based in the US.  He said they were outsourced in India and let slip that they got my information from a database.  I told him for security reasons, I must speak with someone physically in the United States.  He repeated that they were outsourced to India.  I asked him to put my number on the DNC list and he confirmed that he would.  Firefox has crashed several times when viewing You Tube, but I never gave a phone number to call me.  Sound like someone got my number and sold it on a list.
Thanks whocallsme.com!

Received a call on my cell phone from 301-276.  The person with a heavy Indian accent identified himself as Neo Jones, Certified Microsoft Technician.  He wanted me to go to my computer to fix a problem that came to him by an error message.  If I experience any problems with Microsoft software I never send a message or error report when prompted from my computer.  Neo also asked several times for me to log in to my computer.  Finally after telling him I would not turn my computer on he provided a number to call him back.  1-888-851-0953.  He said if I did not fix the problem I could lose my hard drive.  I decided to check out the number first.  Sure glad I did.

A person just called (with a heavy accent from India) saying they were a Microsoft Certified Technichian(?) and would be happy to help with the problems concerning my computer.  She said she had my IP address and phone # and was returning my call regarding problems on my computer... I just needed to turn on my many computers and let her have access to all of them to fix the problems.  What a joke.... NEVER give your information, especially your IP address, to anyone over the phone unless you contacted them first.  The caller ID was from number 301-276.

Got a call from a person with heavy Indian accent who claimed that he is from Microsoft and that Microsoft gets error messages from home computer and that it is infected with virus. He was unable to explain what kind of virus it was infected with nor why my Microsoft anti-virus software missed it. He wanted to instal his software on my computer (?). I rejected. Never give remote access to your computer to someone whom you do not know. I believe it is a scam. Be aware.

Called and said they were a microsoft tech center calling about my computer sending error messages and if they weren't fixed, it would crash.  I was very guarded with this call.  I told them I had an appointment and needed to leave.  He gave me a number to call back (1-888-851-0953) and told me his name was Peter Scott.  With the accent he had, why would he have an American name.  Very skeptical of the call.

Got the call today.  301-276 has came up on my caller ID a couple of times in the past week as missed calls.  So today I answer it, same story as above.  I played along for a few seconds.  He wanted me to log into my computer so he could show me the error messages and he could show me how to find out my computer name.  Horror,  horror I said, oh my what is this going to cost me to fix?  He said this was not a sales call.  I said I would have to call him back, he gave me the 888-851-0953 and said they were Vfix and were certified in the United States with the Better Business Bureau.  At that point I told him I would be reporting him to the FBI and he hung up (quite rudely I might add, as I was very pleasant to him).
Yes, Peter Scott said he was in India too.  All the same markers as the above calls.
I wonder how they spell SCAMMER in India?

Just received a call on my cell from 301-276 (that's all that showed) saying the Send Error Message alerted them to call me and that he (Collin, with an East Indian accent) was going to guide me through the process to correct my computer. I told him I wasn't near it and he told me to call him back when I was, at 888-851-0953.

Got a call from "Unknown" because they had their caller ID blocked. Guy on the phone had an Indian accent. Gave same story as people have related below: calling about error messages I have received on my Windows computer. When I asked what number he was calling from, he said "888-851-0953" and that the company was V-Fix.

There is a Web site for these guys: www.vfix.biz. The grammatical mistakes and misspellings do suggest it was put together by people for whom English is a second language. Also, on the contact page, they give their phone number as "1-8888-510-953" rather than "1-888-851-0953".

The lied to me about how they got my number. I would never consider doing any business with this shady operation!
