Legit collectors per section 809 of the FDCPA http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre27.pdf *must* tell you at initial contact, or send you paperwork within 5 days of initial contact, the following:
1. $amount of debt,
2. name of the current creditor (which may differ from the original creditor who might have sold your debt),
3. a statement that that debt will be assumed to be valid unless you dispute in writing within 30 days,
4. a statement that that if you do dispute in writing within 30 days, the collector must mail you written verification of the debt,
5. a statement that if you ask the collector in writing within 30 days, the collector must send you the name and address of the original creditor if it's different from the current creditor.
If you don't get the 5 disclosures, orally or in writing (you do not have to ask for them, the FDCPA requires collectors to provide them), treat the collector like you would any SCAMMER.
If they say the FDCPA does not apply to them because they own your debt, the debt-owner exemption only applies to the original owner. Has the statute of limitations for your state http://www.fair-debt-collection.com/SOL-by-State.html expired on your debt? If expired, don't pay.
Collectors generally have to be licensed by your state to practise (collect debt) in your state and you can find out by calling your state Attorney Generals Office. Ask if a license is required and does this collector have one. If not licensed, don't pay and file a complaint.

i had gotten a call from this number.  he was threatening me. bad thing i had given a pre paid credit card. i think i am being scammed

Got a call from 888-884-5546 with a claim number stating they have verified my information about some charges I will be reporting to attourney generals office have not called the number back

earlier today they called my sister and told the same thing to her and they first tryed saying it was a payday loan she told them she never had a checking account and they told her the bill was from back in june 2006 she called back and they changed there story to it was a breach of contract with rent a centar she told them she never got anything from there and they insited and instted she did and they want 360 dollars as of today or it could goto court and be over 3000 dollars so she asked for proof of the bill with her signature and she got told they didnt have that they only had very lil info and it was enough to take her to court so she told them that she was contacting rent a center and finding out wat was going on they told her that they destroyed the papers and left no trail of anything wats up with this company?

I got the similar call today to call the 888 number. They even spoofed my cell number and left an identical number at an out-of-state residence. I had three calls to three different numbers all with identical message relating to "charges" and process service, etc. These guys are truly morons. I notified my state attorney general's office and they will receive recorded copies of the voice mail messages. I also have contacted the US attorney general's office in my region. They are getting the .wav files also. Anyone who receives calls like this should immediately contact their state attorney general's office and closest US attorney's office for next steps. You should also file a com[plaint with the FCC due to telephone infractions. You can file yoru complaint online at FCC.gov.

Got a call with similar message about "charges." At the same time, the identical message was sent to my work phone, and a phone number of an inlaw in another state. The weird thing is that the calls to my work and the out-of-state phone spoofed my cell number to make it look like a call from me. This is 100% criminal. The originating number for this 888 call showed an area code for Arizona. I copied all the voice mail recordings and sent them to my state attorney general's office. I am also sending copies to the US attorney general's office in my region. You should all do the same. These guys sound like losers. I'm almost convinced that the originating number (Arizona) to my cell was from a disposable cell phone.

My mother in-law just got a mesbers sage from these people calling them selves global,  I listened to the message and it states that I have charges and a claim aginst me and that this will serve as my notice.  This is my brother in-laws phone, we all just recently moved states and all have new numbers.  I am also a bill collector and know that they are doing what is called skip traceing and linking me to family members.  My mil called them back and they again told her that I was facing charges and that it is ugrnet that I contact them.  It is collection agency's like this that make my job difficult.  They have messed with the wrong person I know the laws and I will be contacting an attorney

Just got the same call and message on my cell phone. Totally freaked me out, my husband called the # the "lawyer" John Walker and was told that they had the wrong Samantha. They were looking for a Samantha with my full name who lives in NM. My husband is a Marine and tore into them, advised them they needed to change there approach and thet we had better not get another call or we will get base legal involved. These people called my gandma looking for me saying I was in trouble and to call them these b*****ds sould get a real job.

Just called 877-700-5790 and he told me to call back and try to find out the name of the company they said it was global but would not give me an address they said they had a P/O box but said it was unessacary to give it to me due to they were only a mediation company. in my opinion this is very bad business.and when i called

This is some bull s**t! I got a call from by boss saying someone wants to serve me. The F*** Face came to my work and gave the paper work to my receptionist. I think I'm being sued? When i called the company back they wouldn't speak with me bacause I was already served the documents. Who Is This Company?

We also received a similar call looking for my son, but the man's name was different. He gave me this number to have my son call back, but wouldn't tell me the name of the company, just that it was a law firm in California. Considering my son doesn't live in California, nor has he been there since he was a little boy, I googled the number and got forums where people are talking about it being a scam. Then, this afternoon, they called my sister looking for him. She lives in a different city and how they got her number is beyond me. These people are good!

A number called me last week and left a message the person claimed his name was James Moore and I have a claim filed against me and that he would be sending me papers for this claim stating for court if I did not return the call at 1-888-884-5546 to set up payment regarding a reference number for a payday loan from supposively 3 years ago. I have been trying to call them back and it keeps going to a recording saying that the person is on the phone so have repeatedly called and called and nothing back is this a scam???

how did it go with an attorney calling them back? they will not identify who they are so unwilling to call them back. hoping for some answers here

While you can't go to Jail for not paying a loan.. you can go to jail for writing bad checks...  AKA FRAUD

Don't let them scare you. They are calling because you may have taken out a payday loan that went into default. They are trying to collect which gives them a bonus in most cases. IT'S NOTHING BUT A PAYDAY LOAN!!!!! You can't go to jail for not repaying a loan. They will scare you and say it's bank fraud because you had to use a checking account to get the loan. I told them it was settled through another collection agency but he insisted his company was more important because they are above a collection agency. I hung up in his FACE! So don't let these jerks scare you.

Got a call on my office number from them. Same blah blah as the people above reported... This sounds like a scam. No way I'm calling them back.

I received a call from my former co-worker saying that a message was left on my old telephone answering machine that I'm in trouble and that charges have been filed against me and my only hope is to call this office at this number 888-884-5546.  At the end of the message she yells in the phone "you have been notified and served."  I don't know who they are or why they are calling me either.
