they call all the time, say ther amex

These people keep calling inquiring about my AMEX card and phishing for information. I have asked them to remove my number 12 times, but they keep calling. When I call AMEX they have no idea who these people are and would never ask account info over the phone unless verifying. 8-10 calls over the last 2 weeks.

IT'S AMERICAN EXPRESS, GUYS. It's not a scam, or a collection agency. Call the number on the back of your American Express card and ask to be put through to the credit department. They'll tell you 888-892-6180 is their outgoing number.
I received the suspicious call this afternoon, thought it sounded odd, googled the number, found this page, got anxious, called the number on the back of my Amex card (an entirely different number) and the representative told me I'd missed a payment on my card. I'd been traveling so I made the payment over the phone, and asked her about the suspicious call. Before I could even give her the number she asked "Was it 888-892-6180?" She said "That's us, the credit department."
End of story. Don't believe the nonsense you read here -- just check it out for yourself. If you're being hounded daily by the automated message then you've either missed a payment, or Amex's Credit Dept has made a mistake. Call 'em either way!

I called American Express 1-800-528-4800 and they confirmed it IS one of their phone numbers! I told them there is no such person at this residence and that this person just happens to have the same first initial and last name as me! I told them they have no business calling just because I happen to have the same initial and no business leaving a message not identifying themselves. They said it was a "misdialed number" and I said no that's not true because the person they asked for has the same last name as me!

Just got a call from them looking for my daughter in law! Told them they had the wrong number but left out the part that I knew the person they were calling about. Called the number back and said it was AM EX and to enter your card number.

I've been hounded every day for the past week; fortunately the call always went to my voicemail. Same recorded message each time, to call re: "important business matter". I figured that it was some kind of telemarketer and never returned their call but thought I'd better investigate further. Glad I did!

I called the number 888-892-6180 and it said American Express enter your 15 digit number, I did not key it in, but gave "some guy" my information. Then got an uneasy feeling so I called the real Amex (from the back of the card). and had them check on the 888-892-6180 number. She said it IS American Express and that they called me in error. Usually these go out to people who are not current on their payments, but my account was just fine. So she said that it was a mistake, and would have my number removed from the list.

they have called me at least 20 times leaving a message for me to call about an important business matter
elbo_13 2011-06-06 21:06:08 Unknown
i actually work there and i think you either "a" need to have the remove the number or "b" pay your f***ing bills dumbass. and trust me were not going to court. its just a new dept in amex and not all employees are familure with it yet. you all need to calm down and pay what you already owe.
bob 2011-06-06 21:06:08 Unknown
I called the number, got a recorded voice asking for my American Express 15-digit number. I don't have AmEx so I made up a number and got a live person who thanked me for calling American Express and asked for my name. That's when I hung up.
A 2011-06-06 21:06:08 Unknown
Got Voice-Mail. Message said 'Please call about an important business matter'
L Kelly 2011-06-06 21:06:08 Unknown
I've been receiving DAILY calls from this number... same claim as above. I called Amex and it is NOT an Amex number - clearly a scam.
X 2011-06-06 21:06:08 Unknown
They called 3 nights in a row at the same time, so I called the number and the recording prompted me to key in my AmEx number. Didn't.
Fakex 2011-06-06 21:06:08 Unknown
These people claim to be AMEX, but they aren't, and if you give these people your details, prepare to have an empty balance.
They are thieves, crooks and deserve to be publically executed.
bdub 2011-06-06 21:06:08 Unknown
Its a phishing scam asking for account info. It isn't a collection agency and isn't American Express. My sources have told me that they are already zero'd in on it and their day in court will be sooner than later. Really, go ahead and pump your fist in joy as I did upon hearing this. Yeahhhh.

Keeps calling my cell phone and asking to call back for important business information.
Chris 2011-06-06 21:06:08 Unknown
Dumped call directly to voicemail. Message said "please call for an important business matter"
H 2011-06-06 21:06:08 Unknown
Called early Saturday AM - claimed to be AMEX - wanted account information. This is a phishing number trying to get American Express Card Holder's information.

Left a message claiming "important business matter" & # claimed to be Amex

I believe she should get a real job. Look at AIG, took our hard earned money and had a really nice party, Bank of America, same thing, CitiBank, same thing, she is harassing the wrong individuals, go after Bank of America and CitiBank (you will have enough to do).

Why nobody talks on credit companies and how they don't respect initial agreement on annual percentage but keep it increasing whenever they want?
My initial one was 3.9% and now, after 5 years is almost 30%. That's totally unacceptable, and am sure there are many of those with same problem and the main reason why they stopped making payments.
Regarding that 888 number, just ignore it, do not call back, and if possible, block them... ;)

I found out that they're American Express because I called their customer service number and they said it is their number. I called the number and asked them if they are a collection agency or if it's a collections call and I was told "they can't disclose that". I complained to the American Express number about the calls stating there's no such person here. American Express told me it's their "credit department". I always thought of them as reputable but I don't like them calling and leaving a message without saying who they are and calling for someone who doesn't live here!
Carolyn 2009-08-13 19:02:53 Unknown
Got another call and called the number and they said they're looking for someone who doesn't live here and we don't know. Told them to stop calling and that I'm going to report it to the do not call registry. If they are collectors they are in violation leaving a message and not stating who they are and what they are calling about.
Carolyn 2009-08-12 17:26:25 Unknown
Got a recorded call saying it's "an important business matter". My bills are paid up to date and I don't have an American Express Card. Regarding Deana's rant, no one purposely gets into debt and they don't have to tolerate harassing calls because of it! The collectors has to identify themselves, or they are in violation. Why did you come to this site anyhow!?!

I got a weird message that said "This is an important business matter please call 888-832-6180". So I called it, it went to American Express and it asked for me to key in my 16 digit number. I did not key it in, but got transferred to someone. He then asked for the number and brought up my account. Which is current, and not overdue. He said that it must have been some mistake by their company and that he would have my number removed from their list. But usually these calls are because your account is overdue and you owe money. I still think the whole situation is really weird, but since I did talk with someone who new how much was charged on my account. I assume that I was talking with someone at American Express. Why don't they leave a message saying this is American Express and we are calling about your account, instead of "this is an important business matter". I still have an uneasy feeling about it, but oh well.

You know it is against the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act to contact you at work.
California State laws are even more strict.
Wondering 2009-07-24 20:47:23 Unknown
Maybe they should stop some of their predatory practices.
Maybe they should stop employing idiots like you.
Wondering 2009-07-24 20:45:31 Unknown
Gee, do you work for a collections or THIS collection agency?
Hope you never lose your job, or find yourself with thousands of dollars worth of medical bills that insurance has denied.
Collection agencies only make money if they collect the debt. Try to work directly with AE, and not these parasites.

It is a scam - NOT an American Express number. I called Amex and asked them. I just wish I could figure out how to get these yahoos to QUIT calling me! I can't tell you how many times the phone ringing has woken up my baby...
