What is your 'advice' for the fact that foreign criminals, using high speed internet, voip, & software, are calling American's trying to extort money on fake debts? Any wisps of wisdom on that? Pretty hard to pay debts that aren't real. Unless of course you're a foreign criminal who takes Western Union, and they do.

Debt Collector
As I read thru these posts, I see a lot of people causing themselves unnecessary stress. I deal with people's credit every day, and this is the best advice for dealing with Collection Agencies-
1) If you intend to pay it, set up a payment plan unless you pay it all at once.
2) If you have no intention of ever paying off the collection (and you know right now whether or not you will EVER pay it off), then stop talking to the collection agency(s) immediately. Stop trying to play lawyer against them (they have a lot more money to spend on legal battles than you). Don't fall for any of their scare tactics (They cannot do a thing to you other than put it on your credit report). Simply stop talking to them and your credit will rebound much faster.
There's this funny little thing called a DLA (Date of Last Activity)... The longer it has been since that date, the less effect that collection has on your credit score. Except every time you decide to curse the collector for calling your house at 7:30pm you create ACTIVITY. You make the effect on your credit score like the collection is brand new.
So... IGNORE THEM and your credit score will go back up on its own (provided you are paying your bills now). Mortgage companies don't require you to pay off OLD collections anymore, finance companies don't either. Eventually, the collection account will drop off your report and if it doesn't... Who cares because it will be so old that nobody will give it a second look and it will no long be a factor in your credit score.
If the constant calls from Collectors bothers you, simply call your phone company and have "call screening" added to your line... this is a service that will not allow blocked phone #'s to call you. The caller must say their name, you receive a special ring at home, you listen to the automated message which includes the caller's name, and you either accept or decline the call. You never have to talk to a pushy collector. Most automated dialers these days never make it to recording a name.
Don't cause yourself the stress of trying to fight colletion agencies... It's a game for the collectors to see how mad they can get you (I know, I've been to a Citi Financial Loss Mitigation Call Center before... did a mortgage for the Ops Manager of the center... He had terrible credit... ironic).
Take it or leave it, that's my advice on collection agencies... I speak from experience in dealing with them. One more thing, if the phone they call on is NOT in your name (i.e. You live with someone), they can be charged with telephone misuse/harrassment by the person who the phone is "listed" to...! :-)

Just started getting calls from 888 899 8039. Caller id said its a "tele-marketer". Asked for somebody i never heard of. Told them that and they hung up. Then called back in few minutes asking same thing. These types of people that call. I just give them a possible name and number i make up. And let them go fish.

Unfortunately these guys and whoever they sell this account to will land up trying this number again and again.  You have 2 choices:  1) Change your telephone #  2) if your # is in do not call and they keep calling you after you tell them you are not their target you need to log and keep records and get a lawyer to sue them.  This violates both the FDCPA and DNCIA

Spoken like a true pond scum bottom feeding bill collector.

The truth is you need to do what is legal.  If they have your home phone # change it.  If they have your cell and you have a smart phone get an app that blocks numbers.   There are a lot of good sites with the numbers they use to call.  Some like NCO have over 170 different numbers in my database.

They can' t just excersice a "right to sue you to collect..." until they actually identify you and your actual location.

Most people who could pay - would, so telling matt to "answer and work something out." is not a solution.  The scummy collector will badger, threaten and even yell at you when you tell them you don't have the money.  If you have any assets like a bank account or a job now they will take you to court for a judgement to seize your bank $ or to garnish your wages.  Conversely not answering doesn't allow them to positively identify you and your location so they will not spend the money to go to court unless they can find you.

Ignoring them will make many go away and sell your account to another scummy debt agency.

Your post clearly makes you out to be a current or former scum sucking POS collection agency goon.

All they get from me is dead air.  Screw the crooked a** collection basturds.  If I had the money, I would have already paid it.  Calling me will get them nowhere.  Now that the nig-ger got re-elected, no doubt I'll never have the money.  Thanks to his useless azz I lost my job in the first place, so the whole damn bunch of them can go fuk themselves.

Hey,

I got a call too. Twice! Once a male automated voice and then a female automated voice. They said "NCO is a Debt collecting company and Its law that we inform u of your Debt!" Not the same words but almost. Then they gave a reference number  and kinda demanded to call 888 899 8039! I somehow couldn't reach them so I called another number which I found on the website (800) 220-2274.

Went to a call centre, the guy spoke very lazily and said I owe $860 to JPM Chase after he searched on his database for my cell number. I asked him if the database knows my name and he said some other name. I suggested that it wasn't me and i just took a new phone and it might have been a guy who had this number before verizon gave me. He said that he will take my name off. But in the process I had to reveal lil personal information. I hope this is not a prank to track people's information!!

They are nasty and hostile.  Hope you never have to deal with them.  After they started threatening me (for a small debt), I hung up on them and they just repeatedly called back for several days every hour like clockwork.  My atty instructed me to send them in a certified letter to validate that they own the debt, and request that they cease and desist phone calls -- hadn't heard back from them in almost a year.  Credit agency agreed to remove record now.  Next I take them to court.

As soon as I got a new phone number the calls started.  They called about every hour.  I started off ignoring them because I know I don't have a debt to anyone, but it was so freaking annoying I had to call to see what was up.

Same as the other commenter, I called the number they gave - an 888 number and it didn't work.  Then I tried the number that Pra_R mentioned and I got through.  After being on hold forever, the customer service rep that helped me was very nice.  I told him the situation and he looked up my number.  The previous owner of the number had a debt to Chase.  He told me he'd notify Chase for me and take care of it.  I hope he does!  I didn't have to give any personal info, just my phone number.

Having a recording call and demand I return call them is a quick to get put on the list of people never to get a call back from me. Dumb-a***s!

I got a call today from NCL Financial Systems - left a message saying they are a debt collection agency and by law they must tell me that and any information can be used to collect on a debt.  Asked me to call them back.  I KNOW that I don't have any debts that I owe and as a lawyer, I know that I would have recieved something in writing 1st (my number and address have not changed in ten years) - sounds like a scam or something, and so I may or may not call them back - with nothing in writing - there is nothing that they can do to me.

This number has called my house every day, sometimes up to four and five times per day. I had to write the number down that was provided over a recording, and I called it back because I was fed up with it. It turns out that it was for a sister of mine who no longer lives with me. These people have done a background check on my sister and found out who she knows, where she's lived, and who knows what else. The guy who spoke to me was not impolite, but very adamant, wanting my sister's number. I do not give her number out without her permission, and that upset him. I did tell him I would have her call them, and that my number be removed from the list. If not, I am going to a lawyer to file harassment charges

These people are sharks.  They keep calling my home asking for someone that I've never heard of before.  I tell them there's no one here by that name and still they call.  These people are freaking morons and should be castrated.  They get paid to harass people...  since I don't condone violence and threats, at least publicly, I'll leave out what I'd like to do with these people if I ever saw them on the street.

Besides... I read somewhere that they are corrupt and linked to some kind of crime.  Just let caller id screen them.

And to, "There's no Law against it"... perhaps you've never been in debt before and do not know what it's like to be broke.  There's no reason to harass someone for being financially challenged.  Go kiss their @$$ somewhere else.

Look...they are a collection agency; they have the right to call you from any number from anywhere, unless you have exercised your rights and asked them not to call. Of course, they then have the right to sue you to collect the money you owe.

Your best course of action is to answer and work something out. Putting off responding to your debt will only make matters worse.

Do you think ignoring them will make them go away?
