I saw a charge on my credit card statement but thought it was associated to credit card fees/interest fees/balance protection since it came up as "privacy protection". Even lawyers can be scammed. No need to be insulting!

If you didn't notice these charges for two years, I'll be sure not to hire you as my lawyer!

Hi there,

I found out a few months ago that this fraudster company has been charging my credit card for two years. I did not notice until a few months ago. When I noticed this strange fee...I called TD Bank who investigated and gave me the company details. I am an articling student and will be a lawyer in a few months. I am suing the company in Montreal and headoffice in Chicago. Those interested in taking action with me please contact me at dallicardilloc@hotmail.com (this should be a class action law suit). It's theft and I not only paid $30-$50 a month for 2 years for a service I did not sign up for but paid interest on these fees as well. I am not happy at all. I am not sure how this happens BUT this supposed company is still taking money from people without them realizing it.

Regards,

Christine

Last year filled out an online form stating I could get a free credit score, never signed up for the service and in fact the so called "credit score" I expected never showed up instead I got some type of message stating the transaction could not be completed, since this I had never noticed that I was being billed 29.95 per month on my credit card, called to complain to CC issuer, filed a chargeback request for I know for a fact I NEVER AGREED TO PAY ANYTHING after all that's what the web offer stated that this service was supposed to be FREE. I have now been charged for 6 months for a so called service I never asked for, a complete scam.

I also had transactions on my pay as you go credit card that I never autherized. From my understanding you fill out a form for something else through Facebook and they then also register you for a 7 day free trial that if you do not cancel they start to bill your credit card. I had a few transactions on my card and because it is pay as you go they do not send you a monthly bill with histroy of transactions. It was easy to miss the dollar amount.

After asking for them to send me my purchase agreement by mail to my house address and informing them that if I did find I personally did not sign up for their product that I would sue them in for the charges made to my card. The superviser said she would refund my last charge. I informed her that was not good enough that I never would have signed up for this and want all the money they charged to my card refunded. She said okay and said it would take up to five business days.

I also had told her that when I searched this number there was many others that found they were being charged without ever purchasing there product.

It is cheaper to refund the money than to have the public battle on the disgruntled non customers being charged.

Recently happened to me as well. Still not sure how or where they got my number but as close as I can figure it was while checking my credit score. When contacted they were very polite, cancelled the so called sevice they provided and did give me a partial refund. They were no help in explaining how they got my number. Was just glad to get this behind me and still cant beleive it happened.

I have been charged $33.54 on my Mastercard for the last four months by Privacyprotec 888-999-0535.  Apperantly I clicked on a site that offered a free credit report.  I never did get a credit report !!!  I phoned Privacyprotec today and was told that by clicking on the site I automatically subscribed to their service.  They said that they were sorry but would only refund me my last payment and would cancel my subscription.  Beware of sites offering FREE credit reports!!!

Call this number 1-888-444-1837 and say that you never signed up, if they say you did, then ask them to send you proof of that. If they will play tough just argue and say anyone could have signed up for that and if they won't refund and cancel you will sue them :)

I had the same problem. They charged me five times with $33.84. I tried to call that number that appeared on my statement and never picked up the phone or the machine told me call back in two hours. Today I called the number on their website, which is 1-888-444-1837 and it seemed too easy. I asked who, when and for what I got this membership and the lady told me it was online consent for a trial or something like that which I had to cancel within 70 days. So then I asked her if I gave my credit card information to them and she said that she is not authorized to view my c.c info, I asked for someone who is authorized. She transferred me and the next lady said she will cancel and refund all the charges. We'll see what happens... Freaking scamers

This is a scam. on my statement is shows "ATHOME 888-999-05".
Do not recall ever signing up for this service or whatever they sell.
Called my visa to cancel but they were not willing to help out. I was given a phone number to call 1 888 999-0543. This was a surprise because i work in retail and its so easy to do a chargeback. especially when you don't have a signature or the card is not present when charging the credit card. They are some how protected in this scam. 19.95 is not a large amount of money  but its has been stolen from me! I do like theft so this is why i have chosen to write on the website.  Its not the end of the world and i will get over it. I am sure that this post and others will help out people just like me that got robbed.

I too have become victim of this scam of being charged $19.95 on my VISA card in my last 2 statements - July & Aug. 2011. I simply never consciously subscribed to any agency for privacy protection & have no idea about the nature of services they are providing me for this fee. It has to be a sleazy scam.  I called up VISA & their rep just told me that I should call up the number 888-999-0535. He could not connect me to a senior officer at VISA for it was past 9:00 PM. The Privacy Protection number was busy every time I called. In my conversation with the CC rep I did ask if they had received similar complaints from other customers & he gave me no definitive answer. I told them that VISA should be more protective of its customers & should not accept charges from such companies as Privacy Protection. We need to spread the word around about this scam & if sufficient people cancel their VISA & MASTER credit cards, the CC companies may start changing their customer care policies. May be we should even start a class action lawsuit against these Credit Card companies for permitting such scams to continue & not protecting their customers. They appear to be working "hand-in-glove" with these scam/con artists such as Privacy Protection.

I called 888-999-0535 regarding a charge on my credit card.  This is a charge you get when you try to access "free credit scores" online.  I entered my home number into their automated message was transferred to an operator and told the guy I wanted the charge reversed.  He asked a few quick questions and the charge was reversed 3 days later.  Just goes to show there is no such think as a free credit report online.

I just noticed the bill on my MC as well, I googled the number and got to this site. Phone the number, enter through automated system by using your phone number, then talked to a rep who canceled my account, I insisted on getting all my money back as I never agreed to this service or the fees, they put me on hold, then a supervisor came on line and refunded my money. Of course it will take 3 business days for my account to be credited.

I just noticed I have been billed $29.95 for SIX months.  My 'excuse' is that I have been off on medical leave, overwhelmed with everything, and thought - over and over again - this was some legitimate thing I had agreed to pay.  Not!  Thanks to everyone who has posted to this site.  I am calling them tomorrow with my 'nice' voice and asking to be reimbursed for all of it...as I requested none of it knowingly.  Thank you Elizabeth for the advice to ask for a name and confirmation number.  Shall do.

I have no recollection of ever having been called by these guys but I recently noticed the monthly $29.95 charge to my Mastercard. After visiting their website I don't feel any wiser. However, I did manage to login and in "my account" there was a link to cancel. I've submitted same and will see what happens in next few days. If nothing then I'll try calling them and if all else fails refer this to my lawyer.

Anyone here no anything about 800-735-2244?  I just posted about it elsewhere on this site. Company name is Saving Smart CA, also charging me $29.95 per month!

This has now happened to me on two different credit cards!  Master Card and Visa.  Received the same claim that I clicked on a free trial for their service on Classmates, a site I had not looked at for over a YEAR!  No idea how they got my credit card numbers.  They would not refund the monies just a promise to close the account, AMEX was unhelpful as they claimed it was my fault for signing up, which I did not.  Bottom line don't believe anyone just cancel your credit cards and get new ones and also cancel your Classmates account.

Take a lesson from me, I was hit twice (so far).

Without a doubt these people are tricksters!!  Is there not an government agency that can shut this stuff down.  I applied for a credit report and I never go it and ended up with this charge on my credit for the past six months, it was so small I never realized it was a scam....

Husband checked his credit card bill very throughly this month and thought the recent charges were his VISA protection but after calling VISA and finding this is not their charges,we called the 8889990535 # and finally spoke with a girl.  My husband was getting nowhere with them, they wouldn't tell him what the company actually did and also how they got his credit card number.  While he was on the phone I googled the number, got this website, read the postings and informed my husband that it is fraud. My husband immediately requested return of all charges, they informed they could only refund the last month ( there were 4 month worth of charges); so my husband informed if they did not comply, we would take legal action.  They said they will refund all 4 months worth of charges, but we will watch the VISA closely to see if they follow through.

Their unanswered number is just to create the appearance that you might be able to "cancel" while they keep taking your money while you try to figure out what to do.

Once you tried to cancel, but they put barriers in the way of doing so, like having a phone number to no where, their charges after that point became unauthorized and fraudulent.

If their charges have always been without your authorization, such as by hiding the "terms" buried in boilerplate legaleze, rather than as prominantly as a "trial offer", with the intent to deceive you into disclosing your account number, then those charges are also fraudulent.

Proceed accordingly.

Cancel by disputing fraudulent charges with your bank, including filing a fraud affidavit, and blocking the card number or having your bank close the account to prevent additional fraudulent charges.  Nothing else will work.
