Received a random text message on 11/7/12 with nothing but Hi and my name.  If this is a business strategy for a porn or spam site, it sure is a weird one.

Me too. Just a couple of days ago. Text read hi david. I responded, but didnt hear back, and i'm glad...

I got a text also - asked who it was - they didn't respond and haven't bothered me since.

Same story here. Received text message from 1-901-334-9935.

Spammer: hey [my first name]
Me: Hi. I don't recognize this number. Who's texting?
Spammer: Do you use Y! IM?? cause msg me my username is txtieflirter84
Me: Spammer? Who are you and how did you get this number? If I don't know you, then don't contact me again.
Spammer: Omg grr my Phone s gonna die ;(
Me: Never text me again!

I think it was dumb of me to respond before I researched the number and found out that others were receiving similar unsolicited texts. Now the sender knows my phone number is valid. The texts appear to be automated: someone somehow gets ahold of a list of mobile phone numbers, texts all of them "Hi [first name]", and if anyone responds to the text, that person receives a follow up text inviting them to communicate on IM. No doubt if the person attempts to make contact on IM, the con artist on the other end will attempt to extract personal information for the purpose of identity theft or other fraud.

I got the exact same message ten mins ago

LOL, Your poor husband was telling the truth. I have got the same text from a txtflirty61 saying to add them to yahoo messenger. Thats why I googled and found this. Looks like it happens to a lot of people.

Same here. She told me I had to add "textgirly4" to Yahoo Messenger to find out who this is. I messaged back and asked them to stop.

I got the "hi ashley??" message too.  Not responding....

I got the message "Hi *******" with my exhusbands name.

I got a text message from this number as well, just saying "Hello [my first name]!!!". A buddy of mine got a text message like the OP is saying, saying to add on Yahoo messenger.
I have not responded to the text.

my husband got a text from this person saying to me to your yahoo messenger to find out who this is.
