Survey
this is the number for MSB, they're a company that provides cost data for the insurance industry, as well as survey services for this industry. If they're calling you it's becasue USAA/Electric/State Auto etc has asked them to make sure your policy is up to date. I work at the helpdesk for this company. They're calling for a completely legitimate reason.

So take your "You people saying beware are ridiculous!" and shove it.

Caller ID for this number showed "Marshall Swift".  Internet search showed Marshall & Swift to be in the real estate industry.  Headquartered in California, with employees located in Texas.  No message left.

These guys are contractors for the insurance industry, following up with clients who have not returned surveys to update housing construction information.  This data helps the insurance company make sure a house is not over- or under-insured in case it needs to be rebuilt after a major claim.  My insurance company is USAA, who told me that this Marshal Swift company is legitimate.

Attorney General Charles Foti filed a lawsuit against USAA & Swift and 5 other insurance companies for collusion, price-fixing and anti-trust violations. Swift manufactures their claims processing software.  Go to  www.claims-portal.com the article states the Attorney General stated "By using claims processing software manufactured by Marshall & Swift/Boeckh and Xactware, the industry has been able to standardize its tactics for low-balling claims, and create a "tainted" database of claims settlements figures which the industry uses to further depress estimates for what people need to repair their homes, according to the lawsuit.. Meanwhile, all of this data is centralized by Xactware's parent company, Insurance Services Office, better known as ISO, allowing companies to collude."

In the fine print, USAA does not require answering Swift's calls. However, when Swift calls insureds every day in an attempt for you to believe returning their call is required and deadline or USAA will drop them - this is wrong.

Obviously, you people know how to type. Why don't you Google search the name of the company before you start inventing your conspiracy theories.  Or get a hobby.

An agent from your insurance company may ask you to update the insurance to value, or send you a renewaldeclarations page and show you what information they are basing the premium on. If you don't read the page to see if it is different they assume that you looked at it and agree with it. If they are sending you survey and you don't respond then they may have the 3rd party Marcshall Swift contact you. Marshall Swift is a company that has 75 years of experience in calculating reconstruction costs. Many insureers including USAA depend on their updates which they do quarterly to be sure that they price the reconstruction cost in the event of a total loss. They actually check prices in over 3000 zip codes. They are considered experts in this field. People who write the garbage I have seen on these sites are ignorant of how insurance companies work and how they work to benefit their customers. USAA doesn't ramdomly pick a number out of a hat, to insure your home. It is based on factual information that you are required by contract to provide; up to and including any renovations that you make; so the rate of premium is accurate to replace your home. Manpower wise any insurer would be hard pressed to call each individual and ask the insurance to value questions. Third parties who have nothing to gain are used so there is no misconception that there is any thing to gain by it. USAA in particular wants to have the actual dollars to replace your home in reserve, incase of a total loss. They aren't out to jack the ptrices for profit. How many other insurers return the money that they have allocated for CAT losses by giving you a rebate in the form of the Subsceiber account every December? USAA gave back 500 Million dollars at the end of 2009. If you note the weather related losses, they had planned for up to 15 hurricanes and they didn't happen. I never got a refund from my previous insurer. I wouldn't change companies for any amount of money. I trust USAA and I am glad they have my Financial Security in mind when making their non- commissioned reccomendations. USAA ROCKS!

The type of dogs you own are a legitimate question on your home owners policy. The policy provides liability, in case your dog bites some one else and they sue you for negligence. Many breeds of dogs have a proclivity or pattern of biting. Sometimes with out provocation. If you have a Pit Bull  or you have a little pouffy dog, either one may have a tendancy to bite some one. That is why they insurance company asks that question. Additionally if you have a gun and are stupid enough to use it, you also may have a greater risk due to a personal lawsuit for injuries you inflict with the gun. The liability insurance part of your policy will protect you up to the liability limits if  you are found negligent (OR GUILTY) in a court of law.

This number called me at 8:00p.m. on a Monday and left no message on my cell phone. I do not answer calls in which I do not know the number. I called them back later and the answering machine indicated that I had reached Marshall & Swift Beck and then gave me an option for tech. support as well as some other options. I agree with the others in that a professional company should leave a message on your phone. I didn't get the impression this company is trying to scam me, however. I have no overdue debts so I don't think this would be a collection agency after me.

I just have to disagree with the leaving a message comment.  We all got on the do not call list for a reason.  You are right, not all calls are a scam, but too many are and even more are unwanted.  If the call is legitimate, companies should leave a message and allow the consumer to call back at their convenience!

This USAA link explains it all:

https://www.usaa.com/inet/ent_utils/McStaticPages?key=usaa_home_survey

Quote "If you have received a letter regarding a Property Survey, Marshall & Swift / Boeckh (MSB), a USAA authorized vendor, will be contacting you by phone to update the information about your home characteristics used to determine the replacement value1 of your home. The vendor has been selected because of their experience with home values and construction costs in your area. Their input will help both USAA and you better understand the cost to rebuild your home in the event of a total loss."

People have to be careful and not "paranoid"

You all are totally paranoid.  Not every call you get is a scam.  Marshall Swift is NOT a collection agency.  They do building estimates.  They have been contracted by USAA to estimate the cost of rebuilding your home for insurance purposes.  You can call USAA to verify this.  Who cares if they don't leave a message or not?  I sometimes don't either when I am calling someone.  It probably takes them too much time to leave messages for all the scared people who aren't returning their insurance surveys.  You can take the EXACT survey on USAA.com if you are so scared of answering their call.  And for heaven's sake, for all the people who are dishonest, not paying their bills and avoiding collections calls, PAY YOUR BILLS!  Then you won't have to be scared of calls like this.

Left no message. That's why I have caller ID. If I don't know who you are, I don't answer my phone. Tough noogies if you don't leave a message. If you are a reputable business, then leave me a message. I may or may not call back, but at least you have put forth the effort.

Wow...interesting reading.  I, too, got a call from this number, which listed "Marshall Swift" on caller ID.  Funny thing is, I actually ANSWERED the phone and got nothing, nada, zip.  Not even heavy breathing or a dial tone.  Makes no sense to me...  As for the people reporting an association with USAA and a homeowner's insurance questionaire, I got one recently, too, but didn't have time to answer it in the 5 days allotted and so threw it away.  No idea if the two are linked, but I personally will not be answering any questions from this company.  If it's that important, USAA can call me themselves.  (The questionnaire I got from them implied it would potentially be a problem for me if there was a loss on our property and we hadn't updated our info, but did not indicate that it was mandatory, so I don't know why they would go about collecting data this way.)  I'm very suspicious.
