Angela is a scammer and you are the victim of a crime. Angela *LIED* to you. Consumer debt is *NOT* prosecuted as a felony in the USA. If you don't believe me, call your local police dept and ask them. This is a version of the you-have-committed-a-crime extortion scam and you are being...
1. charged with fraud or passing bad checks or embezzlement or
2. served with a court summons or arrest warrant or bench warrant or whatever or
3. located in preparation to being served or for a lawsuit or to be arrested or
4. whatever stupid crap reasons they will think up next.

And you have to...
1. call back with your case number or
2. confirm your address or SSN or whatever so you can be served or your papers can be processed or
3. pay $895 now to avoid paying $5,000 in court or
4. whatever stupid crap reasons they will think up next.

DO NOT PAY ANY MONEY TO THESE B*****DS.

Beware extortion scams come in many flavors and they constantly evolve to stay one step ahead of the law.
The FBI warns about payday loan extortion scams here http://www.fbi.gov/news/pressrel/press-releases/paydayloanscam_120710
The BBB has issued several alerts on this scam, just google "bbb.org alert phony debt collector"
Never do what they tell you to do but report them to the Internet Crime Complaint Center http://www.ic3.gov/complaint/default.aspx , the Federal Communications Commission http://esupport.fcc.gov/complaints.htm , the Federal Trade Commission https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/ and your state AG, as appropriate.

Charleigh- i have been getting calls from this same company for a few wks now threating to have charges brought aganist me for a felony check. I have done alot of research on this company via the internet. These people are crazy and there is NOTHING they can or will do to you or anyone one else for not paying them. They are not a law firm they are a debt collector. Now i work in the financial buisness and know a little about the law when it comes to collecting a debt. First it is 100% illegal for a debt collector to talk to you or leave nasty messages on your phone they way these people do. Second you can not be put into jail for not paying a debt. And third i have noticed most of these calls are about cash advance check places that people have gone to. You take go to jail for writing a check at one of those places and not picking it back up. Think about it they knew the check was no good when they gave you money so its just like a loan. These people use these scare tacits to get people to pay. There is nothing they can do. And finalthey cant bringing charges aganist you or anyone else when they are in another state. Dont send them any more money or answer there calls anymore. If you do answer another call from them tell to stop calling you and then send them a certified letter statin the same thing that they are to stop calling you . If they continue after that you can get a lawyer and sue them. But whatever you do dont send them anymore money!!!

I got a phone call at about 2 p.m. est, letting me know that there were "felony charges" being filed against me, by a woman named Angela Smith with Dean Associates (that's how it comes up in my caller id) which is apparently some sort of legal firm? (heavy on the question mark...)

1.5 years ago, I rented to own a computer through a company called Coast2Coastpc.com. Upon the arrival of my computer I naturally opened it and installed basic software applications, etc... but when I closed the lid for the first time, I noticed it closed kind of tilted, so I tried calling Coast2Coast and couldn't get a competent individual to service me over the line so I figured I would call back the next day. Well, the next day, their IT person wasn't to be found in the office, which I thought was strange but whatever- I'll call back tomorrow. Well, I decided to use the computer that afternoon since it still worked but when I went to close it this time, the screen cracked as a result of one of the sides of the housing bulging for some reason. I had this computer for less than a week, so naturally I was livid. I called the computer company and was told to call Acer, as they were the manufacturers and such damage would be covered under the manufacturers warranty. I called Acer, and they said, Hey- sure we'll fix it for you. Just pay us $400 first! Again, I was livid. I stopped paying on the "expensive paperweight" as someone put it earlier, because I was not offered a solution- I was offered more problems.

This Angela Smith said I had 1.25 hours to get back to her with a payment reference number via walmart moneygram for the total amount of $1355.12. I had faithfully made payments for a few months, even after getting the run-around, but my son got diagnosed with autism and I began a fight for his education which cost me my job... This Angela Smith told me that I could *not* claim Hardship, and that "No, there is no one else to call. You are already in the docket, and you need to make at least a partial payment of $355.12 before 5 p.m.TONIGHT. *Without Fail*. Because this is "a felony charge"..." Shouldn't I get some sort of notification by mail that this debt is being pursued in the legal arena? Shouldn't I be offered a *reasonable* amount of time to make a "good faith" payment?

In the state of New Hampshire, if a debt collector refuses a payment plan proposed by a borrower- the debt is void. How is it possible that I cannot claim Hardship? That there is no one at city hall that I can speak to, or an advocate I can contact?

I suffer from severe anxiety, and I am really freaking out over this woman's threats... I have three small children- one of which is disabled, and I am a single parent... this has to be illegal. Is there anyone who can offer me some reassurance that I am doing the right thing by not paying these people? She said I'm on the docket for the morning and that if $355.12 has not been received by 9 a.m., I will be brought up on felony charges. How accurate is this? Can they do that? I have no means to pay- I have less than $100 to live on for the next 10 days, when I get my next child support payment. I only get $1300 a month, and it's barely enough for us to live on. Please help!

Sit by your front door with a favorite beverage around 12:50 your time and have a good chuckle when nobody comes. The behaviors reported in this short thread are serious violations of the FDCPA. You cannot lawfully be jailed or threatened with litigation by a debt collector. Such hardnosed tactics are a sure sign the collector has no proof of claim, and/or has no intention of actually forwarding payments to your original creditor. These are also favorite ploys of the fake payday collectors from outside the US.

When you hear this kind of crap, document everything on paper and record clean phone audio if possible. Consider your debt cancelled and the aggressor on watch as you warm up a lawsuit for its hostile antics. If you have a valid business name and U.S. address, you are cleared for launch to spank your tormentors in court.

I'm not sure I fully understand your story, so I won't comment further just yet. Here's your first homework on the debt industry rules:

These people called me today to at 11:30 am and told me I have until 1 o'clock to send them $400 by money gram or I would be picked up. Okay I know I owe this money but I have been making payments and have not received anything in writing, no phone call, nothing. And I have been dealing with this company for almost 2 years. I missed a payment and now you want the entire total due even though I have been making payments faithfully. "REALLY". Then I get online and find this page. WOW!!!!!!!

My boyfriend came home from work with a message for me from these people, United processing.  I had no idea what it was about, so I called to see what was happening.  The person I spoke to, said she was C.C. Johnson's supervisor, who instructed her to call my boyfriend, *while* he was at work.  About a year ago, I rented to own a laptop, that I had problems with since the first day I got it.  I called and called about this, and apparently my complaints about a non working laptop I got from these people with a missing enter key on the numeric keypad, and a non working numeric keypad aren't good enough reasons to stop paying.  Since I had a very expensive paperweight basically, I refused to pay for it further until it is repaired.  Now because of this, they are threatening to have me arrested for theft of rental property.  My boyfriend says he looked them up and they apparently are infamous with scare tactics to get people to pay.  Not once did I ever get a phone call from the people I got the laptop from asking what was going on.  Not once.  I will confess to having fallen upon hard times and made every effort to make some reasonable arrangement with these people and they didn't want to hear it, and told me I was going to jail for theft.  The woman that I spoke with when I called said that I would be arrested as she was signing the warrants herself, basically saying that they were a law firm representing the people I got the laptop from.  This is messed up, and this needs to be stopped.
