In Ontario, there is a statute of limitations on unsecured debt (credit cards).

That basically just means that they can only sue you for your debt for two years after your last payment.

There are some misunderstanding on this, though, so let?s look at it in more detail?

Basically, if the default occurred after January 1, 2004, you have two years in which the debtor has the option to sue you. However (and this is important) if you make a payment, the clock resets, and they regain that right. So for the love of all that is good and holy, do NOT start repaying a debt once you?ve gone to a collection agency without carefully considering this implication.  

Further, note that this does NOT have any implications on the behavior of the agency, except that if you feel they are threatening you with a lawsuit, you now know with 100% certainty that they are bluffing (if it?s unsecured debt.)

They can still phone you, they can still pass your account off to another agency, they can send you lots of letters?

They just cannot sue, which is, honestly, really nice to know.

Alternatively, don't speak to any debt collector if the first place!  Block all unknown phone numbers using your smartphone caller reject option.  If necessary, forward your landline number to your smartphone so you can screen and reject unknown callers.  Turn your GPS function off and leave it off.  Move to a different city, change jobs, open a new bank account, change all your online information (addresses) to fake ones, use only cash or debit, never ever your credit card. Don't drive - use public transit, taxis, carpool.  Be invisible for two years, preferably a little longer, as insurance ;)

After two years, they cannot sue you!  Sweet.

Just got call from 905-413-8675.  Scary, deep voice  message intones "This is an urgent call.  Press 1"
Assume the banks & credit card companies my ex owes money to have sold his debt to these repo clowns.  Very close to harassment.

Ugh they are calling my house now, for someone I have never heard of.  Said he was calling from Global Credit regarding a collection matter for "Renald Charles" and to call back at 877-241-7841

this number started calling me last week calls many times a day have no clue who it is.Bill collection agencies have to tell you that thay are calling in an attempt to collect a bill.

Ive been getting calls from them for months and i finaly decided to talk to them. They are a collection agency called Global, they are infact a leginment busness.

Since I abhor any intrusion into my private life I only give my number to legitimate businesses, friends and family.  The later two never call the house phone and call my cell.  So, when this unknown caller calls asking for my ex-wife I get firm with them and tell them that if they have legitimate business with her then she would have given them the number to contact her.  She has never lived in my house with my current #.  Unknown to them my ex and I are still really good friends so I called to give her a heads up.  She called them from a blocked number and found that they are indeed Global Collections and they were working on behalf of Capital One.  Hmmm  Glad their not in my wallet.  After reading these and many other website's posts regarding this same company and number I'm prepared for a long drawn out battle which starts with the FCC since they have now been notified that they are calling the wrong number.  The next call will trigger a series of notes to Capital One, the FCC, my states Attorney General and a written note to Global Collections.  BTW, Capital One awarded them "Rookie of the Year 2007" so you gotta wonder if those guys in the Capital One commercials that are ready to pillage and plunder are really Capital One employees.

Same as everyone else. Both phones ring at the same time. Several times a day. Registered and complained with donotcall registry. I heard it's Capital One but can't verify this. I want to write a Cease and desist letter but cannot find reverse directory info.

You can reach a VP of Collections either Troy Moffatt or Jeff Carew at 1-800-563-4929.  Don't go to the snotty operator, but instead use the company directory option (press 1) and spell the last name on your keypad.  I left a detailed voicemail message for Troy.  I may start leaving them once per hour.

This number started calling three days ago, 8+ times a day. Don't know who they are or how to get the calls to stop. The phone company will block the calls for a fee. I answered once. It was a recording reguarding an unresolved personal business matter. I don't have any "unresolved personal business matters"  I am on the national do not call list, but it doesn't seem to to stop JACK S#@*!

This number is a collection agency.  My husband answered the phone once because they wouldn't stop calling and thats exactly what they were.  The wanted money from a past credit card.. So.. If you don't want to be hassled even more, just don't answer.   IT IS A COLLECTION AGENCY based out of canada apparently..

this number has called me 9 times within the last two days, along with 4 calls from other numbers with a similar message. how do they get my cell phone number and how can i get the calls to stop?

Received a call from this number, but no one answers when I take the call.  Our house number was supposed to be unlisted,  but apparently that hasn't stop them from calling.  I sure hope someone figures out who this is and shuts them down!!

Received a call from this #. They stated they had been retained to solve a "private matter" and we had 48 hours to return their call. They didn't leave a name and also didn't mention who they were calling.

I stayed on hold after they called and it is Global Corporatio which is a debt collector for Capital One

These guys are insane, Rogers accidentally sent a bill of mine to collections after I amalgamated my services, in the end they admitted making a mistake, but couldn't call these guys off. I received 10 calls a day on my cell and work numbers, was lied to about the amount I owed, etc etc...

In the end I just forwarded complaints to Consumer Affairs here in Canada along with Bell Canada and the Better Business Bureau and have not heard from them since.

If you live in the Toronto/Markham area I suggest a visit to them directly to discuss, I'm sure they don't get it very often.

This number just called and left a threatening message that if I don't call within 48 hours, they'll take the matter to the next level. No idea what it's about, but it seems very shady. It also said previous attempts to contact us have been unsuccessful, but there haven't been previous attempt. It could be a collection agency, but as far as I know, we have nothing outstanding.

Some money was taken out of my CIBC checking account and apparently it was this company that did it. CIBC gave me this number to call but there is no answer. I did not authorize them to take that money and in my opinion, it is theft. I do not owe them anything. I will be holding CIBC and this company responsible. Will update you guys .

I have received a call from this # 2 times per day everyday in the last 2 weeks on my cell phone, They have asked for Juan, and I have told them they have the wrong #. They keep calling and leaving a recording, I called the # back and got a recording. Today they called and I answered and they asked for Juan again, I told them to hold on while I got him, I then got an emergency squeeker that when a button is pushed it blows a very high pitched screech noise, I blew it into the phone and heard some very foul language then I hung up my phone. I am tired of this, I too have been told by AK. Digitel my cell phone company, they cannot do anything about it. They call all hours of the day, including early morning 6am and late evening, during work hours, It is very annoying.

Thanks for the heads up John. Thanks for letting us know in Ontario the type of Agency Global actually is. No respect for the people they call , the clients they represent and their own employees. Their clients are taking them to courts and now their own staff !!!!!!!!!!!!! And winning to !!!!!!! Carew you certainly know how to pick them .

Called capital one - I was very surprised that they were as helpful.  I gave them my cell number and I was not in their database.   This is good as I have never had one of their cards.   They would not let me speak to a manager and were as helpful as Global Credit. Capital One is 800-4813239  Pls call and complain
