Also I should add that it's a shady contractor hired out to do this and report the hits to the collections agency. They try and get your credit card number as well by dangling a carrot, but they know hardly anyone is dumb enough to fall for that. The real money is the confirmed hits that they sell to the collections agency to update their databases.

Debt Collector
This number is a collection agency skip trace tatic. Yes it is a scam, but not what you think.

The number calls and tests the line to see if it's active (step one), if a person answers the phone it records as a successful hit (doesn't matter who), or if you hang up right away. If successful it tries to trick you into pressing one to admit you are the person they are looking for (this would be a confirmed hit). So they know you are still at that number.

There is no prize, no cruise or whatever the carrot may be to give up your information. Just ignore this number, they will go away eventually. The more hits you give them, the more they will call, even if you are not the person in the recorded message.

had this number call 1-780-947-8989 this morning. You have won 100,000 air-miles, please wait for a rep..."hello sir you have qualified for a 100,000 air-miles give away-what is you age? -are you older then 25?" Hung up, total scam! And knowing the 100,000 air-miles actual give way was months ago.

I have been getting a call from this number lately, but have never answered it. I'm always worried with these scam calls, that even just answering the call or pressing 1, allows them to start charging your phone to make long distance calls on their end! There's a scam like that out there too! So I never answer the calls. But how can I get these to stop? For those of you who have scared these people, lol, have they ever called you back after that? Or is there some other way of stopping this? I've been getting calls from Shaw Cable marketing, and the like too. So fed up with this already. And all on my cell phone. I'm already on the Do Not Call List, doesn't seem to be helping. :( Any suggestions?

WOOOOOWWW!! Smartest guy ever!!! You tried to outwit either a minimum wage Canadian student or even possibly someone a little further down the food chain that lives in a mud hut and works for 25 cents a week to feed their starving siblings. Must be nice to not only have a higher IQ than most of the world, but a fat belly so full from your wealth you can rest your giant brain holding head on it. Good for you. Is it lonely up there being one of the only people on earth smart enough to not give out your c card number over the phone? Hell, it must be tough to breathe waaay up there. I bet the air is thin. Aah Pete, I kid you because I love you pal. But honestly, you tried to look smart here, and as you so eloquently put it "nice try buddy". This is me hanging up on you now, oh clever one.

Probably because the education system failed them you judgemental a**hole. Why don't you pull your head out of your a** before your crapy attitude towards your fellow man flows through to your own kids and they become telemarketers because of a lack of parental guidance. The minimum wage they make is spent on the products that you manufature or sell. Or it is spent on the services you provide. Will the retards of society like yourself ever realize that the opportunities in some of the greatest countries in the world exist as part of an economy that keeps you employed. I don't like the last cop that gave me a ticket, but I certainly won't be harbouring any hostility towards him. As a matter of fact, I bet these calls really get you steamed. Might that be because you are so weak minded that a 10 second call from a stranger could ruin your whole day? If so, you are nothing but a puppet. I mean a total stranger, just doing their crappy job, has full control over your emotions and interactions. How many people did you b***h to because you got that quick call? And to make sure that the whole world knows you are a puppet, you make a public comment like "get a real job". Why don't you get a supportive, productive attitude towards the people you are lucky enough to share this planet with. You might find that it is not as bad as you think. Until then, know that you probably are repugnant to most people that you come into contact with. Not me though, I love you buddy. Good luck with the phone calls.

Honestly, I am glad sights like this are out there. They are helpful for those of us who need the info or for others willing to share info. But arseholes like Mouse make me sick. You and your high horse AND your fancy do not call list. You are probably the type that sits around getting fatter waiting for the phone to ring so you will have something to b***h about. I know your type all too well there mouse and the only people that can stand you are the other cancerously negative human beings who aren't happy unless they have somehing to chew about. You aren't going to save the world by bitching about everything that is wrong with the world. I know this will sound strange, but it is possible to provide useful informatin without cimbing up on your DNC pedestal and spewing your "I'm better than anyone that calls me" crap! Get a hobby for christ's sakes. Do something constructive and maybe you won't be such a self-loathing beast. Anyone that would try to threaten someone with a call to the blackmail outfit known as the BBB clearly needs to find out what they actually do. To help you Mouse, only because I love you, I will tell you. NOTHING!!!! They charge companies money to say good things, and for those that don't pay, they get lower rating and grades. Anyone who would trust the BBB as a non-profit organization is as thick as the people that work for them. Go find some friends that do constructive things with their time and have a positive outlook on this world of ours because you Mouse, are a major contributor to the dirty underbelly that smears the 6 o'clock news every night. How do I know you so well? I can tell you enjoy ruining the day of some desperate for work, minimum wage, living in a dump telemarketer that probably has a bully of a supervisor that, come to think of it, is probably a lot like you. Really Mouse, spend your time living and enjoying the good things, or the cancer you feel for the world might just turn into the real thing. I still love you Mouse, just get it together.

no matter what you say, they'll always come back with a question that is yes or no and they'll ask consecutive yes or no's every time you say 'no'

I just received a call saying I had won 10,000 bonus points with Jazz.  I knew it was a fraud right away.  Buddy gets on the line and axes if I'm 25.  Another sign it's a fraud.  I gave him a few choice words and told him where to go.

Got a call saying I was a preferred Costco customer. Hard to be preferred when I'm not a Costco customer.
Guess the Airmiles line isn't working anymore.
Pressed one for info but never got through to anyone. Not only do they seem to be scammers, they're using an auto call system that doesn't work!
